Summary: This study used mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequences as genetic markers to evaluate the level of genetic diversity and the genetic structure of Culicoides mahasarakhamense from Thailand. Results showed that the level of genetic diversity was relatively high, but most populations were not genetically different. However, one population from northern Thailand was found to be genetically highly different from others, possibly due to historical population isolation and geographic distance separation.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a simple, fast, and specific method used for bacterial identification, and has also been shown to be useful for identifying certain parasites and arthropod vectors. Fast, simple, and reliable methods for identifying arthropod vectors are crucial for controlling diseases transmitted by these vectors.

Summary: This study assessed the optimal conditions for mosquito identification using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) profiling. Three different homogenization methods were used on three distinct body parts of two mosquito species, and the results were evaluated. The thorax and legs were found to be the most suitable specimens for identification, regardless of species or homogenization method. The automatic homogenization procedure was selected as the reference method due to its adaptability to processing a large number of samples. Blood-feeding status did not affect species identification, but blood peaks were present in the mass spectra of all body parts tested. Adding species spectra from the same geographical area improved identification scores for field-collected specimens.

Summary: This study used an ensemble of multiple preprocessing methods to extract critical information from complicated mass spectrometry spectral data for identifying microorganisms and predicting antibiotic resistance. The ensemble method outperformed individual methods, achieving the highest accuracy on independent testing datasets. Important peaks related to antibiotic resistance could be detected, providing valuable information for further investigation of the resistance mechanism.

Summary: This study utilized a polyphasic taxonomy approach to accurately classify six strains within the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC). The 16S rRNA gene-based phylogeny failed to group all ECC species into a monophyletic cluster, while genome sequence-based phylogenetic approaches successfully grouped all species. A new species named Enterobacter pasteurii sp. nov. was proposed based on comprehensive genotypic and phenotypic characterizations.

Summary: Plant endophytic bacteria play important roles in plant growth and stress resistance. This study identified and classified endophytic bacteria in Populus based on MALDI-TOF MS data and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and verified the classification capacity of protein mass fingerprints. The results provide a valuable reference for differentiating and identifying endophytic bacteria.

Summary: In this study, the identification of 230 filamentous fungi isolates using MALDI-TOF MS in combination with the Filamentous Fungi Library 3.0 was investigated. The results showed that using the more time-consuming sample preparation methods improved species-level identification rates, and the in-house threshold for species identification was validated for routine use in the laboratory. This suggests that this commercial platform is suitable for routine diagnosis.

Summary: Oligosaccharides are recognized as prebiotics and their structure is closely related to bioactivity. In this study, UPLC-MS/MS was developed to identify the structure of oligosaccharides, which mainly appeared as sodium adduct in the chromatogram. The fragmentation patterns of oligosaccharides were summarized for different glycosidic linkages. The results showed that UPLC-MS/MS was effective in identifying the structure of oligosaccharides and could be applied in polysaccharide structure identification.

Summary: In August 2020, Aedes albopictus was found in Vienna, Austria for the first time. DNA-barcoding revealed three different haplotypes, but it is unclear whether they resulted from single or multiple introduction events. The proximity of the Viennese Ae. albopictus sites to major traffic routes suggests passive transport may be important for the species' range expansion.

Summary: In order to investigate the occurrence of potential vector species for canine leishmaniosis, trapping was performed in the Upper Rhine valley of Alsace, France. Only one species of sand fly, P. mascittii, was identified at three locations in the Vosges foothills in 2011 and 2018. The low density of Phlebotominae suggests a low risk for Leishmania transmission in Alsace, if introduced.

Summary: Mosquito-borne infections have significant consequences for public health, especially in the absence of well-established vector control and surveillance programs. A study in Qatar identified the types and distribution of mosquitoes of public health importance, with species like Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles stephensi being widespread with the risk of disease transmission. Regular field studies are needed to fill knowledge gaps and accurately assess the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in Qatar.
