Summary: Milk is an important source of nutrition for neonatal mammals, containing bioactive molecules that may impact their physiology and immune function. This study used mass spectrometry to characterize the milk proteomes of a Pongo pygmaeus and a Gorilla gorilla, finding changes in the proteomes across lactation. The study also identified changes in immunoglobulins and demonstrated differences between samples from different individuals.

Summary: Based on the latest research, the Bornean orangutan is facing a declining population due to habitat degradation and land-use change. The study suggests that stronger conservation measures are needed to ensure the future of the Bornean orangutan.

Summary: The study documents the first recorded case of a Bornean orangutan capturing and consuming a slow loris. It shows that the adult male orangutan did not share the food with the female orangutan and her offspring, who could only watch.

Summary: Coagulum in the semen of some primates plays different roles in different species. For orangutans, the coagulum may enhance the survival of their own sperm, possibly due to their unique reproductive traits such as difficulty in predicting ovulation.

Summary: Strongyloidiasis in Papua New Guinea (PNG), particularly in the Western Province, is poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the seroepidemiology of strongyloidiasis in a community in the Balimo region of the Western Province. The results showed a high occurrence of strongyloidiasis in this community, with age being a determining factor of seropositivity. This study raises questions about the impact of this neglected disease and other intestinal parasites on disease burden and comorbidities.

Summary: This article presents two cases of severe canine Strongyloides stercoralis infection in Austria. The authors emphasize that the infection may be overlooked in Austria and the Baermann funnel technique is necessary for diagnosis. In addition, treatment with moxidectin may not always eliminate the infection, and ivermectin should be considered.

Summary: By analyzing behavioral data of orangutans, it was found that when male conspecifics are present, mother orangutans adopt protective measures, such as decreasing the distance between themselves and their offspring, to avoid infanticide.

Summary: A recent study in Malaysian Borneo's Kinabatangan River area reveals that despite extensive forest conversion to oil palm plantations, orangutans are still able to find food and shelter resources within these modified landscapes. The study also identifies misconceptions and lack of cooperation as major barriers to in situ conservation in these agroforest matrices.

Summary: Research in primate nutritional ecology explores the concepts of quality, preference, and energy content in food choice. Recent research suggests a more nuanced understanding, including nutrient balancing and state-dependent foraging decisions. This study on frugivorous primates found that the choice of high or low-quality food may depend on their previous feeding choices.

Summary: This study constructed a parallel laser photogrammetry apparatus to measure forearm lengths and flange widths of wild Bornean orangutans. The results show that male flange widths and forearm lengths do not reliably increase, and female growth plateaus at the age of first birth.

Summary: The study found that female Bornean orangutans adopted a more extreme energy-saving activity pattern and diet post-fire, resting more, travelling less, and switching to less-preferred foods compared to pre-fire. Additionally, the probabilities of association between females and their weaned immature offspring, and between related and unrelated adult females were lower post-fire, while the probability of agonism between unrelated females was higher. This demonstrates the lasting consequences forest fires can have on orangutans' behaviors and social structures.

Summary: The study evaluated ten marine Actinobacteria isolated from red seaweed Gelidiella acerosa for their potential antivibrio activity, showing that five isolates exhibited activity against Vibrio species with potential for controlling vibriosis. The presence of nrps genes in all isolates suggests a potential for bioactive peptide production, while the absence of pks I, II and hmgcr genes indicates a different biosynthetic pathway.

Summary: This study demonstrated the successful detection of the D614G mutation in the SARS-CoV-2 genome using the RT-qPCR-HRM method. The results showed that the method was able to distinguish between the D614 and G614 variants, providing an effective means for active surveillance of specific mutations.

Summary: This study analyzed the sequence of the furin cleavage site (FCS) region in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces in Indonesia. Several mutations were identified, with the D614G mutation being the most important and prevalent variant. The study suggests an evolutionary advantage of the D614G mutation in the FCS region of the spike protein.
