Summary: Ovine psoroptic mange, caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis, re-emerged in the UK in 1972 and has been increasing steadily since. Resistance to treatments and long-distance movements of infected sheep contribute to the spread of the disease. Preventing the movement of infested sheep is crucial for national management programs in controlling sheep scab.

Summary: The study revealed that the spatial behavior of the undulate skate is mainly driven by seasonal and diel patterns, with peak presence in summer, highest space use in late spring, and lowest activity in summer. The skates were more active during night-time and stayed in sandy bottoms during the daytime. Sea temperature had a negligible positive effect on their activity.

Summary: An integral analysis was conducted on the acute and chronic toxicity, bioaccumulation, sites of entry, and distribution of four trace metals (copper, iron, lead, nickel) and the non-trace metal mercury in the ciliate Paramecium caudatum. Mercury was found to be the fastest accumulating and most toxic metal. The sensitivity of Paramecium caudatum to the five metals tested was similar to other ciliate species. The findings suggest the potential for safer guidelines to protect aquatic biota.

Summary: In Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, it has been estimated that approximately 1.5% of the general population is infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), but the state-wide circulation of HCV remains unknown. A retrospective study analyzed data from HCV serological tests conducted between 2004 and 2013, revealing a seroprevalence of 1.3% in Bahia, with higher rates among males and increasing with age. The presence of anti-HCV antibodies was detected throughout all mesoregions of Bahia, with the municipality of Ipiau having the highest infection rate.

Summary: European earwigs may have a significant economic impact on sweet cherry production, with the severity of the impact varying between cherry varieties and influenced by factors such as bunch size. However, the reasons for the differences in damage between varieties remain unknown and require further investigation to minimize the impact of earwigs on sweet cherry production.

Summary: This study identified seasonal variation in the incidence of Helicoverpa armigera larvae, with peak larval incidence observed between November 26 and December 2. Variogram analysis showed moderate to strong larval aggregation in all nine sampling weeks, with an estimated average aggregation distance of 2425.48 meters in pigeonpea fields. The Voronoi diagrams illustrated spatial heterogeneity of H. armigera larvae between sampling weeks, potentially linked to food source availability.

Summary: This study aims to assess the geographical distribution and associated factors for common childhood illnesses and service utilization across Ethiopia based on the 2016 Demographic and Health Survey. The results showed that common childhood illnesses were more prevalent in the North of the country, while service utilization was lower in the Eastern, South-western, and Northern parts. Poverty and reported distance to health facilities were found to be associated with service utilization.

Summary: The accumulation of different photosensitizers in ciliates Paramecium caudatum and amoebae Amoeba proteus was evaluated using fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy. These single-celled eukaryotic organisms can be used as model objects at the initial stages of preclinical studies of various substances and potential photosensitizers, as they share similar intracellular distribution patterns with mammalian cells.

Summary: This study assesses the distribution of COVID-19 prevalence in Brazilian cities by monitoring SARS-CoV-2 RNA in sewage, identifying that the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the city were hit hardest by the pandemic. This indicates that the situation for many Brazilians is much worse than reported by official figures.

Summary: There is limited research on HPV genotypes distribution in Tunisia, hindering the assessment of vaccine-preventable cervical cancer. In this study, a national survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and genotypes distribution of HPV in Tunisian women. The findings highlight the importance of evaluating the cost effectiveness of HPV vaccine implementation and supporting the preventive program of cervical cancer in Tunisia.

Summary: This study investigated the causal agent, genetic diversity, and host range of almond leaf scorch (ALS) in Israel. It confirmed that Xylella fastidiosa is the causal agent of ALS in Israel and described its genetic and host range characteristics. The study also revealed that ALS spread continues to threaten the almond and grapevine industries in Israel.

Summary: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that is highly prevalent in low-income and middle-income countries and tropical and subtropical regions. It can often be masked by other endemic infectious diseases, leading to under-reporting or co-infection. The specific risk factors, symptoms, mortality rate, and frequency of co-infection for leptospirosis have not been well-documented. This systematic review aims to evaluate published articles on the risk factors associated with leptospirosis infection and co-infection with other pathogens.

Summary: This study analyzes the spatial distribution and drivers of gaseous energy combustion pollution in each province of China using panel data from 2006 to 2019. The results show significant spatial differences and cluster characteristics, with most areas located in high-high and low-low aggregation areas. Independent variables such as population and energy consumption have different impacts on pollution levels in different regions. The study provides policy recommendations to balance pollution levels and reduce emissions in various regions.

Summary: Echinococcosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by larval stages of cestodes in the genus Echinococcus, is a major public health burden in China, especially in western regions. The disease shows significant spatial aggregation in China, with the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau being a hotspot area, calling for strengthened prevention and control efforts.

Summary: The study introduces a model that links spatial patterns with negative density dependence, revealing the impact of density dependence on spatial patterns. By analyzing two datasets and inferring the density dependence parameter alpha for individual species and communities, the study found that density dependence varies at different scales.

Summary: Arctic charr introduced to the Kerguelen Islands have established a self-sustaining population adapted to the unique conditions, with smaller individuals occupying pelagic zones and larger individuals dominating littoral habitats. Although resource-poor, Arctic charr in Kerguelen showed no evidence of cannibalism. Monitoring of this population may provide valuable insights into the adaptability of the species and its responses to ongoing environmental change.

Summary: Changes in body size can be influenced by social and non-social factors. In naturally founded populations, body size tends to increase with spatial expansion but decreases as populations age and density increases. However, in human-introduced populations, body size remains constant or even increases as populations age.
