Summary: Acrylamide (AA) is a neurotoxicant that inhibits synaptic function and neural cell differentiation in the hippocampus and olfactory bulb-subventricular zone (OB-SVZ) region. AA exposure decreased neuroblasts in the OB by suppressing neuronal migration and downregulating genes related to neuronal differentiation and migration. These findings indicate that AA has a similar detrimental effect on neurogenesis in the OB-SVZ as it does in the hippocampus.

Summary: This study investigates the role of H3K9 methylation and its methyltransferases Suv39h1 and Suv39h2 in adult hippocampal neurogenesis. The results show that H3K9me3 and H3K9me2 are enriched during early stages of neurogenesis and the expression of Suv39h1 and Suv39h2 is high at these stages. Inhibition of these enzymes reduces neuronal differentiation while increasing proliferation, and knockdown of these enzymes impairs neuronal differentiation in the adult dentate gyrus. These findings highlight the critical involvement of H3K9me3 and its methyltransferases in the regulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis.

The study also reveals region-specific increases in apoptotic cells that parallel the increases in proliferating cells.

A previous study found a gene-environment interaction (GxE) effect between ApoE4 and Cd that worsens cognitive decline in mice. This study investigates the role of adult neurogenesis in rescuing Cd-induced cognitive impairment in ApoE4-KI mice and finds that stimulating adult neurogenesis can reverse spatial memory deficits and enhance neurogenesis.

This study investigated the protective role of NRG against liver and brain toxicity induced by lead acetate in rats. The findings suggest that NRG has potential hepato- and neuroprotective effects against lead acetate toxicity.

Summary: The endocannabinoid system plays a role in modulating adult hippocampal neurogenesis by influencing the proliferation and survival of neural stem and progenitor cells. Through experiments on mice, it was found that the deletion of cannabinoid receptors or the enzyme responsible for producing endocannabinoids can disrupt adult neurogenesis. The specific cell types involved in producing endocannabinoids relevant to neurogenesis are still unknown. This study revealed that the deletion of the enzyme in neural stem and progenitor cells and astrocytes significantly impairs neurogenesis, while the deletion in neurons does not have the same effect.
