Summary: Pelvic fractures are often associated with spine injury, and concomitant spine injury can have an impact on the surgical outcome of pelvic fractures, especially on the quality of reduction of acetabular fractures.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study of 143 patients with pelvic ring injuries treated with operative fixation found that male patients had a lower risk of hardware complications, and posterior pelvic ring fixation at multiple sacral levels was associated with a decreased risk of fracture displacement. However, there was no significant association between preoperative radiographic characteristics and the risk of hardware failure or fracture displacement.

Summary: Infection after pelvic fracture is a serious complication, but the recurrence rate is relatively low. Complex pelvic trauma is a risk factor for recurrent infection, and the DAIR strategy is effective in patients with stable implants.

Summary: The study aimed to add new data regarding the evaluation of surgical fixation of challenging unstable pediatric pelvic fractures, and found that a combination of external and internal fixation methods can achieve fracture union in all patients within 8 weeks, with no pelvic asymmetry or leg length discrepancy at a mean follow-up of 2 years.

Summary: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition where the normal protective Lactobacilli are replaced by high quantities of facultative anaerobes, leading to gynecologic and obstetric post-operative complications. BV is an important cause of obstetric and gynecological adverse sequelae and it increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections. BV is often asymptomatic, can resolve spontaneously, and often relapses with or without treatment.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of preperitoneal pelvic packing (PPP) and angioembolization (AE) for patients with equivocal vital signs after initial resuscitation. The study included 65 patients with pelvic fractures. The results showed that AE may be beneficial in terms of reducing mechanical ventilation duration and incidence of infectious complications for hemodynamically unstable pelvic fracture patients with equivocal vital signs after initial fluid resuscitation.

Summary: Pelvic fractures are increasingly common in the elderly population, with a greater increase observed in men. Pelvic fracture itself contributes to higher mortality in individuals aged 65 and above.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of PCCD in patients with pelvic fractures in a Level I trauma center. One third of patients with pelvic fractures received a PCCD, with 39% of them being incorrectly positioned. These results suggest a need for reevaluation of education programs on PCCD indication and application.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of preoperative anticoagulation on venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding complications in patients with blunt pelvic fractures requiring operative fixation. The results showed that preoperative anticoagulation reduced the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) without increasing bleeding complications.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate a method to measure pelvic bone mineral density (BMD) in computed tomography (CT) scans, and investigate its association with age and pelvic fracture incidence. The findings suggest that pelvic BMD declines with age and may be a contributing risk factor for pelvic fracture in motor vehicle crashes.

Summary: This study aimed to compare non-operative and operative treatment of humeral shaft fractures in terms of fracture healing, complications, and functional outcome. The findings showed that operative treatment resulted in better fracture healing, fewer complications, and improved functional outcomes compared to non-operative treatment.

Summary: This study examined the clinical practices of orthopedic and trauma surgeons in the Netherlands regarding the imaging and surgical fixation of pelvic fractures in older adults. The results showed significant variation in practice patterns, which seemed to be influenced by the type of hospital the patients were presented to. It is suggested that a regional or national treatment protocol should be implemented to ensure a more uniform approach.

Summary: The study in Belgium from 1988 to 2018 showed an increasing incidence of pelvic and acetabular fractures, with the majority occurring in older adults. Surgical treatment is more common in younger adults, but a significant number of operations are also performed in older adults due to the higher incidence in that age group.

Summary: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis who suffer from unstable spine fractures require comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to identify secondary fractures and compressive epidural hematomas. These patients undergo prolonged inpatient hospitalizations with significant morbidity and mortality.
