Diiodinated carbocycles and oxygen heterocycles can be readily synthesized by electrophilic carbocyclization of aryl propargylic alcohols in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. The resulting diiodide can be further exploited by subsequent oxidizing and coupling reactions. Both the iodine anion and cation generated from I-2 are used effectively. The presence of a trace amount of water is essential for this electrophilic cyclization.

Three-component chemo-selective oxy-allylation of a-diazo carbonyl compounds: Access to a-ternary carboxylic esters

Zi-Sheng Chen, Xiao-Yan Huang, Qing Liu, De-Xin Song, Fang Yang, Kegong Ji

Summary: This article presents a synergistic Rh(II)/Pd(0) dual-catalyzed strategy for the three-component oxy-allylation of a-diazo esters, alcohols, and allylic benzoates. The reaction involves the trapping of active protic oxonium ylides with catalytic p-allyl Pd(II) intermediates. Interestingly, water also participates in the reaction through a different allylic migratory insertion of palladium-carbenes. These transformations offer a straightforward approach to various a-ternary allylated carboxylic esters using readily available starting materials under redox-neutral conditions, leading to the successive generation of two new C-O and C-C bonds at the carbene center. Dynamic common correlated effects of financial inclusion on foreign direct investment: Evidence from East-Asia and Pacific countries

Yue Sheng Chen, Zhong Chen, Sajid Ali, Muhammad Imdad Ullah, Muhammad Khalid Anser

Summary: This research investigates the impact of financial inclusion on foreign direct investment (FDI) in East Asia and Pacific (EAP) countries. Traditional econometric methods fail to consider cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity among countries, leading to biased estimates. Using the unique method called DCCE, the study finds that financial inclusion positively and significantly affects FDI in higher-income and overall EAP countries. In lower-income EAP countries, financial inclusion has an insignificant correlation with FDI, which becomes significant when an interaction term for institutional performance and financial inclusion is included. Therefore, policymakers should focus on increasing financial inclusion to attract FDI and promote economic growth in EAP economies.

Sajid Ali, Nazma Faqir, Falak Naz, Muhammad Ishtiaq Jan, Naeem Khan, Amal Alotaibi, Riaz Ullah

Summary: The study found that complexes 1 and 2 can effectively inhibit the formation of bacterial biofilms and cause damage to the bacterial membrane. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of complexes 1 and 2 were 46.87 +/- 1.822 and 93.75 +/- 1.345 and 47.87 +/- 1.345 and 94.85 +/- 1.466 mu g/mL, respectively. Both complexes also showed good interactions with E. coli DNA. Therefore, complexes 1 and 2 are good antibiofilm agents that can restrict the development of bacterial biofilms on therapeutic implants by disrupting the bacterial membrane and interacting with bacterial DNA.

Zeolite amendment reduces lead accumulation and improves growth and yield in tomato plants irrigated with sewage water

Rashid Jawad, Aamir Nawaz, Shaghef Ejaz, Sajid Ali, Muhammad Shahzad Saleem, Hafiz Mohkum Hammad

Summary: Sewage water (SW) causes heavy metal accumulation in soil, particularly lead contamination, which affects plant growth and produce quality. Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of zeolite soil amendment on tomato plants grown with SW irrigation. Results showed that the application of 0.75% zeolite improved plant growth attributes and decreased lead accumulation compared to SW-irrigated plants. Zeolite treatment also increased chlorophyll content and physiological traits in the plants. This study highlights the potential of zeolite as a soil amendment to mitigate the negative effects of SW irrigation on crop growth and metal accumulation.
