A bidentate ligand based on N-monoaryl 4,4'-bipyridinium undergoes self-assembly to dinuclear rectangular metallocycles upon coordination to palladium(II) and platinum(II) centers. These metallocycles form a very stable complex with pyrene in aqueous solution and in the solid state. A crystal structure of the pyrene Inclusion complex is presented. The association constants between pyrene and metallocycle 3a in organic solvents and water (K-a = 2.3 x 10(6)) were determined.

Amino Acid-Viologen Hybrids: Synthesis, Cucurbituril Host-Guest Chemistry, and Implementation on the Production of Peptides

Liliana Barravecchia, Iago Neira, Elena Pazos, Carlos Peinador, Marcos D. Garcia

Summary: The paper discusses the development of viologen-amino acid hybrids through specific methods, and explores their potential applications as guests in cucurbituril hosts, as well as their potential roles in constructing two model tripeptides.

Vinyl sulfonyl chemistry-driven unidirectional transport of a macrocycle through a [2]rotaxane

Arthur H. G. David, Pablo Garcia-Cerezo, Araceli G. Campana, Francisco Santoyo-Gonzalez, Victor Blanco

Summary: By utilizing a combination of CAD chemistry and thia-Michael addition, the researchers achieved irreversible unidirectional transportation of a ring through a linear component in a [2]rotaxane. The system's efficiency was demonstrated through in situ operation using NMR and HRMS techniques.

CB[7]- and CB[8]-Based [2]-(Pseudo)rotaxanes with Triphenylphosphonium-Capped Threads: Serendipitous Discovery of a New High-Affinity Binding Motif

Iago Neira, Carlos Peinador, Marcos D. Garcia

Summary: New triphenylphosphonium-capped cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7])- and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-based [2]rotaxanes were successfully synthesized using a simultaneous threading-capping strategy. However, attempts to obtain the CB[8] analogue were unsuccessful due to unexpected strong interaction between the host and the phosphonium caps.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Summary: Here, we report a method for synthesizing highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by incorporating axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into pyridinium-based macrocycles. These fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes show a significant aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. The AIE is attributed to limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape within the cyclophane structure. Additionally, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. The dual properties of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes have great importance for the future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.

Vermellogens and the Development of CB[8]-Based Supramolecular Switches Using pH-Responsive and Non-Toxic Viologen Analogues

Liliana Barravecchia, Arturo Blanco-Gomez, Iago Neira, Raminta Skackauskaite, Alejandro Vila, Ana Rey-Rico, Carlos Peinador, Marcos D. Garcia

Summary: We present a new class of pH-responsive viologen analogues called vermellogens, which are synthesized efficiently in aqueous media using hydrazone exchange reactions. The vermellogens show significant pH-responsivity and the parent analogue, N,N'-dimethylated vermellogen, exhibits anion-recognition abilities and non-toxicity. The host-guest chemistry of the vermellogens with macrocyclic receptors has been studied experimentally and theoretically, showing similar behavior to a known herbicide but with different redox reactive capabilities.

Metal-directed self-assembly of constitutionally dynamic systems: control of the nuclearity of Pd(ii)/Pt(ii) metallacycles

Iago Neira, Olaya Domarco, Tamara Rama, Victor Blanco, Carlos Peinador, Marcos D. D. Garcia, Jose M. Quintela

Summary: In this study, ditopic ligands incorporating various functional groups were self-assembled with Pd(ii) or Pt(ii) complexes, leading to the formation of metallacycles. The shape and nuclearity of the metallacycles were controlled through concentration changes and the addition of aromatic guests or other external stimuli.

Heptagon-Containing Nanographene Embedded into [10]Cycloparaphenylene

Juan P. Mora-Fuentes, Marcos D. Codesal, Marco Reale, Carlos M. Cruz, Vicente G. Jimenez, Alice Sciortino, Marco Cannas, Fabrizio Messina, Victor Blanco, Araceli G. Campana

Summary: We synthesized and characterized a new type of nanohoop that contains a curved heptagon-containing pi-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) unit. This nanohoop showed strong binding abilities with curved pi-systems such as fullerenes C-60 and C-70. The host-guest complexes formed between the nanohoop and fullerenes displayed rapid charge separation upon photoexcitation, indicating promising electron-donor properties.

Aqueous Three-Component Self-Assembly of a Pseudo[1]rotaxane Using Hydrazone Bonds

Pablo Corton, Natalia Fernandez-Labandeira, Mauro Diaz-Abellas, Carlos Peinador, Elena Pazos, Arturo Blanco-Gomez, Marcos D. Garcia

Summary: A new polycationic pseudo[1]rotaxane was successfully synthesized through hydrazone bonds, self-assembled in excellent yield in aqueous media. The thermodynamically controlled process involves the [1 + 1] reaction of a bisaldehyde and a trishydrazine, formation of the macrocyclic part, conversion into pseudo[1]rotaxane, and the one-pot [1 + 1 + 1] condensation process. The obtained molecule exhibited the ability to form self-inclusion complexes and supramolecular aggregates in different concentration ranges.

Engineering the HOMO-LUMO gap of indeno[1,2-b]fluorene

Raquel Casares, Alvaro Martinez-Pinel, Sandra Rodriguez-Gonzalez, Irene R. Marquez, Luis Lezama, M. Teresa Gonzalez, Edmund Leary, Victor Blanco, Joel G. Fallaque, Cristina Diaz, Fernando Martin, Juan M. Cuerva, Alba Millan

Summary: A strategy for modulating the optoelectronic and magnetic properties of indeno[1,2-b]fluorene has been developed. Introducing specific groups in the molecule leads to redshifted absorption maxima and a narrowed HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The single-molecule conductance of antiaromatic indeno[1,2-b]fluorene has also been studied, showing higher values compared to a reference molecule.
