High chemoselectivity for the synthesis of two kinds of substituted coumarins controlled by the counteranions of the cationic palladium catalysts is described. The asymmetric version of the reaction for the synthesis of 3-alkylldene dihydrocoumarins is realized with high enantioselectivity.
