We present a statistic method to measure the concentration of particles in flow by the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT). This method is based on the fact that the fluctuating numbers of particles contained within a small OCT detection volume caused by Brownian motion are governed by Poissonian distribution. Particle concentration is evaluated from the statistical analyzes of the OCT intensity signals that are backscattered by the moving particles. The method is experimentally verified with flow phantoms of polymer microspheres. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones for low concentrations while relatively large discrepancies emerge for high concentrations. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Ocular and systemic determinants of perifoveal and macular vessel parameters in healthy African Americans

Grace M. Richter, Jae Chang Lee, Nasir Khan, Alexander Vorperian, Brennan Hand, Bruce Burkemper, Xiao Zhou, Zhongdi Chu, Ruikang Wang, Rohit Varma, Amir H. Kashani

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between systemic and ocular characteristics and perifoveal and macular vessel density in healthy African American eyes. The results showed that longer axial length, reduced signal strength, reduced central subfield thickness, and older age were independently associated with reduced perifoveal and macular vessel density.

Modeling the biomechanics of the conventional aqueous outflow pathway microstructure in the human eye

Alireza Karimi, Reza Razaghi, Seyed Mohammadali Rahmati, J. Crawford Downs, Ted S. Acott, Ruikang K. Wang, Murray Johnstone

Summary: Intraocular pressure is determined by the resistance of aqueous humor outflow, which is influenced by the mechanical properties of trabecular meshwork, Schlemm's canal inner wall, and juxtacanalicular connective tissue. Understanding the biomechanical interactions of aqueous humor with outflow tissues is crucial for regulating outflow resistance and fluid dynamics in the eye.

Biomechanics of human trabecular meshwork in healthy and glaucoma eyes via dynamic Schlemm's canal pressurization

Summary: The stiffness of the trabecular meshwork is significantly higher in glaucoma eyes compared to healthy eyes, indicating differences in viscoelastic mechanical behavior. These findings shed light on the mechanical property distinctions in the outflow pathway of healthy and glaucomatous eyes under dynamic loading, potentially serving as a new biomarker for early diagnosis of glaucoma.

Intrasession Repeatability and Intersession Reproducibility of Macular Vessel Parameters on Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Glaucomatous and Non-Glaucomatous Eyes

Alexander Vorperian, Nasir Khan, Jae Lee, Bruce Burkemper, Xiao Zhou, Dominic Grisafe, Vivian LeTran, Zhongdi Chu, Brandon Wong, Benjamin Xu, Brian Song, Ruikang K. Wang, Grace Richter

Summary: This study compared the intrasession repeatability and intersession reproducibility of macular vessel parameters in glaucoma and non-glaucoma subjects using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The results showed that macular OCTA scans have high repeatability and reproducibility, making them a useful tool in monitoring the longitudinal progression of glaucoma.

Imaging-photoplethysmography-guided optical microangiography

Qinghua He, Ruikang K. Wang

Summary: We present a method for imaging facial cutaneous microvascular perfusion using wide-field imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) and handheld swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT). The iPPG system utilizes a 16-bit-depth camera to generate a 2D wide-field blood pulsation map for guiding the OCT imaging of cutaneous microvasculature. The results from iPPG and OCT demonstrate the potential of guided imaging of cutaneous microvasculature for assessing skin conditions in dermatology and cosmetology.

Cone Structure and Function in RPGR- and USH2A-Associated Retinal Degeneration

Paul. S. Micevych, Jessica Wong, Hao Zhou, Ruikan. K. Wang, Travis. C. Porco, Joseph Carroll, Austin Roorda, Jacque. L. Duncan

Summary: This study compared cone structure and function between patients with RPGR and USH2A-related retinal degeneration. It found that outer retinal structure and choriocapillaris perfusion were more abnormal in patients with RPGR-related retinal degeneration compared to those with USH2A-related retinal degeneration. However, there were no significant differences in below-normal regional sensitivity between rod-cone degeneration associated with variants in these 2 genes expressed at the photoreceptor-connecting cilium.

Sex Difference in Capillary Reperfusion After Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Diabetic Mice

Wenbin Zhu, Catherine M. M. Davis, Elyse M. M. Allen, Sarah L. L. Feller, Thierno M. M. Bah, Robert E. E. Shangraw, Ruikang K. K. Wang, Nabil J. J. Alkayed

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that poor outcome after stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2) is linked to impaired microvascular tissue reperfusion. Furthermore, they discovered differences in microvascular reperfusion response between male and female DM2 mice after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). These findings suggest that DM2 impairs capillary perfusion and exacerbates ischemic brain injury in male but not female mice with DM2.

Summary: SpeCamX is a mobile application that transforms a regular smartphone into a multispectral imager. It utilizes the smartphone's RGB photographs and converts them into multispectral images, eliminating the need for specialized devices or attachments. The app also includes plugin functions for extracting medical information. In a clinical study, SpeCamX was used to create an augmented smartphone bilirubinometer with superior performance compared to default smartphone cameras.

Summary: This study presents a method and system for non-contact measurement of neck pulses using micro-motion imaging (mu MI). The proposed method extracts carotid pulse (CP) and jugular vein pulse (JVP) waveforms without the need for manual identification, making it non-invasive and self-guided. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the method and its potential use in early screening of cardiovascular diseases.

OCTA Derived Vessel Skeleton Density Versus Flux and Their Associations With Systemic Determinants of Health

Sam Kushner-Lenhoff, Yuandong Li, Qinqin Zhang, Ruikang K. Wang, Xuejuan Jiang, Amir H. Kashani

Summary: This study examines the relationship between retinal capillary flux measured by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and systemic determinants of health. The results suggest that retinal capillary perfusion, as indicated by flux and vessel skeleton density (VSD), is associated with various systemic factors, such as age, blood pressure, diabetes status, and hematocrit. The findings highlight the potential of OCTA-derived measures to provide additional information about retinal perfusion and its relationship with overall health.
