We experimentally demonstrate a new type of waveguide multiplexer device designed for silicon photonics, with a crosstalk level as low as -35 dB and an operational wavelength range of 300 nm. A compact device footprint of only 100 x 160 mu m(2) offers an excellent potential for integration with other silicon nanophotonic circuits. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Summary: Silicon photonics on-chip spectrometers, particularly the spatial heterodyne Fourier transform spectrometers (SHFTSs), have shown potential in various fields such as medical diagnostics, pollution monitoring, and astrophysics. A recent advancement in this technology demonstrated an SHFTS with wide-area light collection and 16 interferometers, achieving high spectral resolution and increased etendue compared to conventional devices.

Summary: Integrated mid-infrared micro-spectrometers show great potential for environmental monitoring and space exploration. The use of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) as a platform for integration is promising due to its capability for large volume and low-cost production of compact photonic circuits. However, the limitation of the strong absorption of the buried oxide layer in SOI for wavelengths beyond 4 μm is overcome by utilizing metamaterial-cladded suspended silicon waveguides to implement a spatial heterodyne Fourier-transform (SHFT) spectrometer operating at wavelengths near 5.5 μm.

Neutron waveguides with finite repulsive potential in clad

I Molina de la Pena, R. F. Alvarez-Estrada, M. L. Calvo

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between an incoming slow neutron and a straight semi-infinite material waveguide. The waveguide creates an attractive potential on the neutron, resulting in reflection, scattering, and confined propagation. New 3D scattering integral equations are proposed to address the difficulties arising from the infinite length of the waveguide and specific propagation modes. Approximate formulas for probability amplitudes and fluxes are provided, and applications and numerical computations for two-dimensional media and waveguides are presented.

Ultra-broadband silicon beam-splitter based on subwavelength metamaterials

Summary: This article proposes an ultra-broadband and fabrication-tolerant symmetric Y-junction utilizing subwavelength metamaterials. Experimental results show that the TE0 excess loss remains below 0.3 dB over a bandwidth of 260 nm (1420-1680 nm), even in the presence of fabrication deviations of +/- 10 nm. Additionally, our power splitter exhibits excess loss lower than 1 dB for the TE1 mode within 1475-1575 nm.
