Summary: All-optical processing is a promising strategy for future information systems, with the importance of breaking the diffraction limit of light and achieving effective light manipulation. Subwavelength optical localization allows for freely manipulating light fields, and this review summarizes the development of achieving subwavelength optical localization by exciting toroidal mode in photonic metamaterials.

Summary: In this paper, we calculate the light transmission of a subwavelength plasmonic array composed of parallel cylinders with different cross-sections using the boundary element method. Our results demonstrate that plasmonic resonance is sharper for horizontal ellipses, and the structure is highly sensitive to refractive index variations in the media.

Summary: This paper presents a novel negative index metamaterial (NIM) lens imaging sensor system for subwavelength microwave nondestructive evaluation (NDE) using homodyne detection measurements. The system provides a simple, low-cost, and highly sensitive imaging solution that can overcome the diffraction-limited resolution at far-field working distances. The study demonstrates the unique focus-scanning capability of NIM lenses for target localization without complex tuning mechanisms.

Summary: The study introduces a novel toroidal plasmonic resonator that tightly compacts all resonance modes and reduces radiation loss, achieving a high quality factor. A trapped mode is excited by introducing a slit perturbation, doubling the confinement effect. The on-chip excitation of the trapped mode is analyzed, showing good agreement between experimental results and numerical simulations.

Summary: This study proposes a design method for underwater gradient metalenses, which can achieve broadband, high-efficiency, high-gain, and high-symmetry acoustic focusing. By optimizing the refractive index profile and using a square-latticed metamaterial, the conversion of plane waves to subwavelength focusing is achieved over a wide frequency range. Additionally, the design exhibits good environmental adaptability, making it suitable for use in high-pressure environments.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrated the control of light transmission through a slab of plasmonic liquid metacrystal by an external electric field. The induced macroscopic anisotropy caused polarization-dependent suppression of transmission at resonant frequencies, indicating selective plasmon excitation based on the orientation of meta-atoms with respect to the electromagnetic wave polarization. Analyzed theoretically from first principles, the results were compared with experimental data.

Summary: Optical delay lines control the flow of light by introducing phase and group delays, crucial for engineering interferences and ultrashort pulses. Photonic integration of such delay lines is crucial for chip-scale lightwave signal processing and pulse control. However, typical delay lines based on long spiral waveguides require large chip footprints. We propose a scalable, high-density integrated delay line using a skin-depth engineered subwavelength grating waveguide, which reduces crosstalk between waveguides and saves chip footprint area.

Summary: By breaking the symmetry of the nanoparticle surroundings, the properties of high quality factor SLRs can be easily modified. We demonstrated how changing the refractive index of the surrounding immersion oil by controlling the ambient temperature of the device can increase the quality factor of the SLR. These results show accurate and reversible modification of SLR properties, opening up possibilities for tunable SLR-based photonic devices.

Summary: In this study, a structural design for labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial is proposed using a topology optimization method to realize a subwavelength bandgap preventing the transmission of low-frequency sounds. The optimized design consists of air-filled channels of different widths, which exhibit the subwavelength bandgap based on the monopole resonance induced in the meta-atom. Numerical analysis based on the finite-element method demonstrates the low transmission coefficients of the obtained designs for a wide- and low-frequency range. Experimental results show the functionality of the optimized and simplified meta-atoms constructed using 3D printing.
