Summary: In this study, we investigated the association between changes in inflammatory, metabolic, and oxidative biomarkers over 5 years and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) over 10 years. We found that individuals with elevated levels of IL-6 and insulin after 5 years had a higher independent risk of CVD at 10 years, with each increase in IL-6 and insulin levels increasing the 10-year risk by 32% and 2%, respectively.

Summary: The study investigated the 10-year incidence of progression from intermediate to exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the Korean population, identifying genetic and environmental factors influencing that progression. The annual progression rate from intermediate to exudative AMD in the Korean population was found to be approximately 2.8%, comparable to whites. Factors positively associated with exudative changes included age, family history of AMD, and preexisting exudative AMD in the fellow eye, while regular intake of green tea was associated with a decrease in exudative changes. The ARMS2 SNP rs10490924 showed a significant association with AMD progression.

Summary: Beavers can enhance wetland areas by converting lotic habitats into lentic ponds, and beaver dam analogues (BDAs) are used to restore ecosystems in North America and Europe. This study investigated the impact of beaver dams and BDAs on amphibian breeding occupancy. Barred tiger salamanders were found in natural beaver ponds, while BDAs had lower occupancy rates. Beaver complexes had less fish abundance and were older and deeper than BDAs. The study suggests that future beaver restoration efforts should focus on the top of effective drainages.

Summary: This study conducted in a large German cohort found that the incidence and progression of AMD are strongly associated with age, with each 10-year increase doubling the risk of AMD. AMD progression over 5 years is common in the German population, especially in older age groups.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly, especially its neovascular form characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV). This study explored the role of circular RNA Uxs1 in CNV regulation and found it to be consistently upregulated in CNV patient specimens and mouse models. CirRNA Uxs1 promotes CNV by sponging miR-335-5p, which leads to the upregulation of placental growth factor (PGF) gene and activation of the mTOR/p70 S6k pathway. These findings suggest that circRNA Uxs1 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for CNV.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe visual loss in older adults in developed countries. The role of oxidative stress and matrix metalloproteinases, particularly MMP10, in the pathophysiology of AMD is of great interest. This study aimed to clarify the involvement of MMP10 in choroidal neovascularization and found that it plays a significant role in its development, making it a potential therapeutic target.

Summary: This study suggests a constant increase in the incidence of nAMD in the Finnish population aged 75-84 and 85-96 years over the past 15 years, with a prevalence of 3% in 2020. The projected increase in the elderly population by 2050 may predict the future trends in nAMD. Timely recognition and referral of nAMD patients are crucial for maintaining vision-related functionality, especially among the aging population.

Summary: B vitamins may protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as suggested by a cohort study on older adults in Bordeaux, France. The study found a significant association between normal serum folate levels and a high dietary intake of B5 and B6 with a lower risk for developing advanced AMD. Adopting a healthy diet rich in B vitamins may help reduce vision loss due to AMD.

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence and indications for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) compared to those without SCD using a large national database. The results showed that SCD patients had a higher risk of revisions for periprosthetic joint infection, aseptic loosening, and hematoma compared to non-SCD patients, independent of other comorbidities.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the morphological and functional outcomes of intravitreal brolucizumab treatment for refractory neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in the first year. Results showed that brolucizumab could stabilize visual acuity and reduce the number of injections. It also improved anatomical outcomes by reducing subretinal fluid and pigment epithelial detachment. However, adverse events such as intraocular inflammation were observed.

Summary: This study found that lower intake of fruit fiber and cereal fiber was associated with an increased risk of developing tinnitus. Dietary fiber, especially insoluble fiber, may reduce the risk of tinnitus by lowering vascular risk factors. Further longitudinal studies on different types and sources of fiber and tinnitus risk are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of retinal specialists in detecting retinal fluid presence in eyes with age-related macular degeneration, and found that an artificial intelligence algorithm achieved higher accuracy compared to human specialists. The AI algorithm outperformed human specialists in detecting both intraretinal and subretinal fluid presence.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of beaver dams on the flow regime of a stream in SW England and examined the mechanisms behind flow attenuation in beaver wetlands. The results showed that beaver dams increased lag times and reduced the frequency of high flows, especially during large storm events. These findings support the importance of beaver dams in attenuating flows, but further research is needed to understand their impact during extreme weather events.

Summary: The developmental trajectories of the nasopharyngeal microbiome in early life and the composition of the microbiome during illnesses are associated with the risk of childhood asthma. A Staphylococcus-dominant microbiome in early infancy is linked to an increased risk of recurrent wheezing and persistent asthma, while detection of rhinoviruses and predominance of Moraxella during wheezing illnesses are associated with asthma that persists throughout later childhood.

Summary: This study analyzed longitudinal data to investigate the impact of age and other factors on susceptibility to RV-C infections. The results showed that while RV-A and RV-C infections were similar in infancy, RV-C detection decreased with age while neutralizing antibody prevalence increased. The ratio of RV-C to RV-A detection during illnesses was found to be related to age, genetics, and wheezing illnesses, indicating potential factors influencing susceptibility to RV-C.
