Summary: The study found that higher serum uric acid levels were associated with an increased risk of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes, with females showing a higher sensitivity to high uric acid levels. Further prospective cohort studies are needed to verify uric acid as a biomarker for predicting the risk of VTDR and to investigate if decreased uric acid levels could decrease the risk of VTDR.

Summary: This study developed and evaluated a nomogram based on non-imaging clinical data to predict the risk of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The results showed that age, BMI, systolic blood pressure, diabetes duration, and glycated hemoglobin were independent risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

Summary: The study found that an increased number of dual cones in diabetic rats correlated with fT4 levels. The risk of color vision deficiencies was higher in diabetic patients, but the study did not detect any effect of thyroid hormones on the development of color vision deficiencies.

Summary: This nationwide cohort study aimed to investigate the risk factors for exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in individuals with diabetes. The study analyzed authorized clinical data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, involving over 1.7 million participants. Data on various factors including duration of diabetes, insulin usage, and presence of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were collected, and the association with incident exudative AMD was assessed using a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard model.

Summary: The aim of the English NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP) is to reduce the risk of sight loss amongst people with diabetes by the prompt identification and effective treatment of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy. The programme has successfully contributed to reducing certifications for severe vision impairment and blindness, but faces future challenges such as automated analysis for grading and new camera technologies.

Summary: By studying plasma metabolites in T2DM patients, multiple biomarkers including amino acids, organic compounds, and oxylipins were identified to guide DME diagnosis. The combined application of these biomarkers showed high diagnostic value in predicting DME occurrence in non-DME patients.

Summary: This study used contemporary psychometric validation techniques to investigate the association between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and physical functional difficulty. It found that individuals with diabetes or DR are more likely to experience physical difficulty compared to those without these conditions, particularly pronounced in those with severe forms of DR. The presence of concurrent depression or medical comorbidities among those with DR significantly increased the risk of physical difficulty, highlighting the importance of identifying vulnerable populations for targeted interventions.

Summary: This study reports the prevalence and factors contributing to undiagnosed diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Northeastern China. The results show a high proportion of undiagnosed DR, with significant variations in risk factors for undiagnosed non-vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (NVTDR) and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR). Early detection and addressing determinants of undiagnosed DR are crucial.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between body composition and severe diabetic eye disease (SDED) in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The results showed that visceral/android fat ratio, visceral fat percentage, and android fat percentage were associated with SDED. Waist-height ratio (WHtR) showed the strongest association with the SDED risk.

Summary: This retrospective study examined the natural history of diabetic retinopathy in 170 patients and found associations between family history, severity of retinopathy, and presence of co-morbidities. Patients with PDR had longer duration of diabetes and poorer glycemic control, emphasizing the importance of adherence to management regimens and patient education.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of referable diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients aged 80 and 85 years and determine if screening interval can be extended safely in this age group. The study showed that the risk of retinopathy progression is quite low in this age group and only a small proportion of patients require treatment.
