Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of three surface treatments on repair shear bond strength (SBS) of aged composites. Methods: A total of 120 cylindrical samples made of a micro-hybrid composite (Clearfil APX) were randomly assigned to one control and three experimental groups (n=30) after water storage (3 weeks). All experimental groups included surface roughening with diamond burs. Subsequent treatments were provided as follows: group 1-only (self-etching) bonding; group 2-silane and bonding; and group 3-phosphoric acid etching, silane, and bonding. The composites were repaired with the same brand and were aged (water storage [48 hours] and thermocycling [2000 cycles]). Each group was divided into two subgroups (each, n=15): new-water storage at 37 degrees C for one week; old-water storage for six months. The SBS was tested. The fracture mode was assessed under 40x magnification. Results: Mean SBS values (MPa) for the study subgroups were as follows: control (new: 3.38 +/- 1.6; old: 1 +/- 0.76), group 1 (new: 27.3 +/- 1.8; old: 25.7 +/- 1.9), group 2 (new: 59.1 +/- 7.9; old: 50.8 +/- 4.6), and group 3 (new: 48.5 +/- 8.6; old: 39 +/- 3.5). Significant influence of the conditioning method and the duration of water storage was observed (p<0.01 [two-way analysis of variance {ANOVA}]). The SBS of all groups were significantly different (all p values <0.01 [Tukey]). Longer water storage time significantly reduced repair bond strength in all experimental groups (p <0.01). Although the control group and group 1 showed approximately 100% and 75% adhesive failures, respectively, groups 2 and 3, respectively, demonstrated about 75% mixed and cohesive failures. Weibull analysis showed that groups 2 and 1 had the lowest and highest probabilities of failure among the experimental groups, respectively. Conclusion: All experimental groups produced acceptable SBS levels; however, use of silane and bonding systems showed the most superior results. Acid etching reduced the SBS.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the dimensions of permanent dentition in Iranian orthodontic patients and establish cut-off points for sex identification based on these measurements. The results showed that sex dimorphism was common in dental measurements, influenced by various factors, with mandibular canines being the most appropriate teeth for sex identification.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effects of different frequencies of binaural beats on working memory and attention. The results showed that 10 Hz binaural beats can improve certain cognitive parameters in the visuospatial modality, but not in the auditory-verbal modality. Additionally, short-term training can enhance working memory and attention.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of digital radiography in the diagnosis of external root resorption in deciduous teeth. The results showed that digital radiography can provide a good accuracy in diagnosing and measuring external root resorption in deciduous teeth, but there might be an overestimation in the size of resorption in girls and cases with actual lesions smaller than 3mm.

Development of fibroblast/endothelial cell-seeded collagen scaffolds for in vitro prevascularization

Daniela S. Masson-Meyers, Fahimeh Tabatabaei, Lane Steinhaus, Jeffrey M. Toth, Lobat Tayebi

Summary: The development of vascularized scaffolds is a major challenge in tissue engineering, and co-culturing with endothelial cells is a possible approach. In this study, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and fibroblasts were cultured on collagen scaffolds using different culture conditions. The results showed that collagen gel scaffolds supported cell proliferation and viability, while collagen sponge scaffolds were fragile and lacked signs of vascularization. However, under the experimental conditions, the HUVEC/fibroblast-seeded scaffolds were not suitable for generating in vitro prevascularized equivalents.

Effects of Rigid and Nonrigid Connections between the Miniscrew and Anchorage Tooth on Dynamics, Efficacy, and Adverse Effects of Maxillary Second Molar Protraction: A Finite Element Analysis

Marzieh Mazhari, Mehrnaz Moradinejad, Mohsen Mazhary, Atefe Rekabi, Vahid Rakhshan

Summary: This study compared the effects of rigid and nonrigid connecting wires on the stress, anchorage loss, and risk of root resorption of miniscrews using finite element analysis. The results showed that using a rigid connecting wire can provide better control of the anchorage and reduce the risk of root resorption, but it increases the risk of miniscrew failure. The stress on the miniscrew is higher with a rigid connection, while it is lower with a nonrigid connection. Parametric analysis showed that a higher elastic modulus of the connecting wire in the nonrigid anchorage reduces the anchorage loss and risk of root resorption, but increases the stress on the miniscrew.

Combined Effects of Different Bracket Bonding Adhesives and Different Resin Removal Methods on Enamel Discoloration: A Preliminary Study

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three orthodontic bracket adhesives and three resin removal methods on enamel discoloration. The results showed that all nine combinations of adhesives and resin removal techniques caused visible discolorations. Self-etch composites or RMGI might be recommended over total etch composites for adhesive selection. Using Stainbuster burs together with tungsten carbide burs is recommended to reduce discoloration. However, the choice of adhesive removal technique can greatly affect the coloration caused by each composite type.

Summary: The diameter of PSAA in this Iranian population is smaller compared to other populations, with very few large canals present. Although the average diameter increased in the anterior regions, large canals were not present in these regions. Males tend to have larger PSAAs, age might not change canal parameters, gender might affect canal diameter, and right/left sides are similar in terms of PSAA anatomy.
