Summary: Adding magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) as an antibacterial filler to dual-cure resin cement significantly improved its bacteriostatic effect against Streptococcus mutans without compromising its physical properties. Developing MgONPs-doped resin cements can be a promising strategy to enhance the material's ability to inhibit cariogenic bacteria.

Summary: Low-toxicity, elemental-releasing resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs) were prepared in this study. The addition of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and Sr/F-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr/F-BGNPs) affected the chemical/mechanical properties and cytotoxicity. The experimental RMGICs showed desirable physical/mechanical properties with lower toxicity than the commercial material.

Summary: The literature reports on the overall perspective of nanotechnology and reinforcement of dental biomaterials by nanoparticles, but there is a lack of research on the reinforcement of dental biomaterials incorporating various nanostructures. This review focuses on current developments of glass ionomer cements (GICs) after incorporating different types of nanostructures, suggesting that most nanostructures could enhance mechanical strength and antibacterial activity, but clinical translation and applications are still missing.

Summary: This study investigated the incorporation of Biosilicate (R) in glass ionomer cement (GIC) and its effects on physico-mechanical and biological properties. The surface characterization, setting and working time, compressive strength, ion release, cell cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial activity were analyzed. The results showed that 5% Biosilicate (R) improved surface quality and had comparable working and setting time. The ion release and antimicrobial activity were significantly increased, while cytotoxicity increased only for certain experimental groups. The incorporation of Biosilicate (R) had different impacts on Maxxion R and Fuji IX.

Summary: Several studies have recently investigated the use of nanotechnology in dental materials to enhance their properties. This study focused on evaluating the antibacterial and mechanical properties of type I glass ionomers reinforced with halloysite nanotubes modified with 2% chlorhexidine, at concentrations of 5% and 10%. The results showed that incorporating nanotubes at both concentrations effectively inhibited the presence of Streptococcus mutans, while also maintaining and improving the mechanical properties of the ionomers.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of ethanolic extract of red propolis on glass ionomer cement used for bonding orthodontic bands. The results showed that at a concentration of 25%, EERP demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against two types of bacteria, while not affecting the fluoride release capacity and mechanical properties of the cement.

Summary: The study synthesized a series of P (AA-co-IA) copolymers with different molecular weights through a water-based solution photopolymerization method. The results showed that increasing the TGA content led to a decrease in the molecular weights and polydispersity index of the synthesized copolymers. Additionally, the viscosity of copolymers decreased with increasing TGA concentration in the polymerization recipes.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement/ diopside (GIC/DIO) nanocomposite for biomaterial applications. Diopside was synthesized using a sol-gel method and added to GIC at different weight percentages. Characterization of the synthesized diopside was performed using XRD, DTA, SEM, and FTIR analyses. The fabricated nanocomposite showed enhanced compressive strength, microhardness, and fracture toughness. The fluoride-releasing test indicated suitable options for dental restorations and orthopedic implants.

Summary: By modifying the surface of basalt fibers (BF) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), the interfacial adhesion between BF and glass ionomer cement (GIC) matrix can be improved. The optimum concentration for BF modification was found to be 5 wt% of APS, resulting in 5%APS-BF-GIC exhibiting the best comprehensive mechanical properties.

Summary: The study demonstrated that BioUnion filler releases a higher concentration of Zn2+ in acetic acid compared to water, and shows effective antibacterial properties against oral bacteria. Furthermore, the released Zn2+ concentration remains stable in acidic environments, without affecting the compressive strength of the material.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the volumetric abrasive wear of high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (hvGIC) and a glass hybrid restorative system (ghRS) as potential alternatives to amalgam. Results showed that the wear rates of hvGIC and ghRS were similar and not affected by resinous coating. Both hvGIC and ghRS displayed higher abrasive wear compared to conventional GIC, but fell short of the abrasion resistance of the hybrid composite resin.

Summary: The study found no significant differences in wear rates between high-viscosity glass ionomer cement and glass hybrid restorative system, regardless of resinous coating. Both materials showed significantly higher abrasive wear compared to conventional glass ionomer cement, but fell short of the abrasion resistance values of hybrid composite resin.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant difference in wear rates between hvGIC and ghRS, and the resinous coating did not affect this. Restorations of hvGIC and ghRS showed significantly higher wear resistance compared to CR, while the conventional GIC underperformed.

Summary: The study investigated the volumetric abrasive wear of high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (hvGIC) and a glass hybrid restorative system (ghRS), finding that they did not perform as well as hybrid composite resin (CR) in wear resistance. The resinous coating did not effectively protect against advanced abrasive wear. Under occlusal loading, caution should be taken when using hvGIC or ghRS as alternatives to amalgam or composite resin for posterior teeth restoration.
