Summary: This study demonstrates that montelukast is effective at reducing arsenic-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human bronchial epithelial cells. By inhibiting arsenic-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and NF-kB activation, montelukast can suppress arsenic-induced cell migration and the expression of extracellular matrix proteins and EMT-regulating transcription factors. Combination treatment with fluticasone and montelukast can reverse the inhibitory effect of montelukast on arsenic-induced EMT.

Summary: In this study, the researchers aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of RUFY3 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. Results showed that high expression of RUFY3 was significantly associated with tumor size, microvascular invasion, clinical stage, and poor prognosis in HCC patients. Furthermore, RUFY3 was found to promote HCC cell growth, invasion, and metastasis through activating NF-kappa B-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). These findings suggest that RUFY3 may serve as a novel target for HCC treatment.

Summary: Beta-patchoulene (beta-PAE) is a compound extracted from patchouli with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. This study found that beta-PAE can inhibit the growth, proliferation, migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition of hypoxia-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, and promote apoptosis.

Summary: This study found that IGJ was poorly expressed in breast cancer patients with metastasis. Overexpression of IGJ was associated with improved distant metastasis-free survival and overall survival. Experiment results showed that IGJ inhibited the invasion and metastasis of breast cancer by suppressing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Summary: This study found that the expression of SPTBN1 was significantly lower in primary breast cancer tumors than in normal tissues, and lower levels of SPTBN1 were associated with significantly shorter progression-free survival. Loss of SPTBN1 promoted EMT, the viability of MDA-MB-231 and BT549 in vitro, and the growth of MDA-MB-231 tumor xenografts in vivo by upregulating miR-21 level.

Summary: Epithelial/mesenchymal (E/M) plasticity is important in both embryogenesis and tumorigenesis. The role of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is unclear. This study shows that RAGE signaling maintains the mesenchymal phenotype of aggressive TNBC cells through the expression of SNAIL1 and its crosstalk with the TGF-β pathway. RAGE inhibition promotes epithelial features and reduces migration and invasion capacities. In vivo inhibition of RAGE reduces metastasis incidence and improves survival.

Summary: SPOCK1 is upregulated in pancreatic cancer tissues and associated with lymph node metastasis. It promotes pancreatic cancer cell proliferation by affecting cell cycle transition and enhances cell migration and invasion by regulating EMT progression. SPOCK1 also activates the NF-kappa B pathway by interacting with I kappa B alpha, leading to EMT and metastasis in pancreatic cancer.
