Summary: This study examines the bank production process with nonperforming loans in Japanese banking. The research finds significant inefficiencies in Japanese banking, mainly attributed to the hard-to-achieve targets set by the standard directional slack inefficiency model. The proposed minimum distance directional slack inefficiency estimator provides practical targets for bank managers. The empirical evidence suggests that high investment and strategic efficiency are key factors behind Japanese banks' performance.

Summary: This study introduces a novel enhanced Russell graph (ERG) efficiency measure for evaluating the efficiency score of multi-stage decision-making units (DMUs). The proposed model is extended to general multi-stage series network structures. Two numerical and empirical examples are provided to illustrate the use of the proposed model and the managerial and economic implications of measuring the efficiency score of multi-stage DMUs.

Summary: This study examined the pattern of water use efficiency and its potential relationship with urbanization and foreign direct investment between 2007 and 2016 in 11 West African countries. The results showed that Benin, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Mauritania, and Togo achieved high efficiency in water use, while the other countries had lower efficiency. Economic growth had a negative impact on water use efficiency in West Africa as a whole. Urbanization, foreign direct investment, export, industrial activities, and literacy rate all had significant effects on water use efficiency in different panels.

Summary: Cook et al. (2013) propose a DEA-based model for performance evaluation of non-homogeneous DMUs under both CRS and VRS, extended by Li et al. (2019) to VRS. This paper applies these models to Hong Kong hospitals, dividing the production process into subunits with the same inputs and outputs. The CRS and VRS versions of DDF models produce similar results to previous studies, with differences found in the statistical tests due to different technologies assumed.

Summary: This study reexamines the GTFP using a slack-based directional distance function combined with the Malmquist-Luenberger Productivity Index, finding a downward trend of productivity growth in Chinese provinces, partly due to no significant improvement in technical change. There is a significant difference in efficiency change between the slack-based measure and the original DDF measure.

Summary: The use of directional distance function (DDF) has increased in empirical studies, particularly in health economics for modeling hospital technology. The choice of direction in modeling with DDF is a crucial issue. This study proposes an approach to address the choice of direction and applies it to U.S. hospitals. The findings show that publicly owned non-teaching hospitals face substantial opportunity costs in inpatient care, while urban-area teaching hospitals have a higher substitution rate for nurses compared to public non-teaching hospitals and rural-area hospitals.

Summary: In this paper, we examine the method used by the Danish water regulator to account for differences in companies' environmental conditions and propose adjustments to improve its effectiveness. The analysis reveals significant correlations between efficiency scores and external factors, suggesting the need for a new approach. Our new method, using permutation-based approaches, addresses this issue by accounting for the distribution of DEA assigned multipliers.

Summary: This paper introduces two desirable properties related to the allocative efficiency term in the decomposition of economic efficiency. It shows that the residual used to calculate allocative efficiency is numerically inconsistent in several economic efficiency decompositions. The paper presents two properties, called "essential" and "extended essential," which should be fulfilled for correct interpretation of the allocative component in these decompositions.

Summary: Environmental efficiency and the shadow prices of undesirable outputs are important topics. In data envelopment analysis, the shadow prices can be calculated using the weights from linear programming. However, the weights for corner points are not unique, and most solvers only return one optimal value. To address this uncertainty, we propose a model that selects weights based on support from other points. We apply this model to a dataset and UK dairy farms.

Summary: Since August 2018, African swine fever (ASF) has caused over one million pig deaths in China and led to a surge in pork prices. To address this issue, the Chinese government has implemented two farm subsidies: the compulsory culling subsidy (CCS) and the large-scale breeding subsidy (LBS). Through a game-theoretic model, the study explores the optimal design of these subsidy programs and their impacts on different stakeholders.

Summary: This study examines whether the threshold parameter in the Omega ratio represents risk aversion by analyzing the asymptotic expansions for risk premia. The results suggest that the threshold in the Omega ratio represents risk aversion when the variance of the additional risk decreases with the background risk and when the density of the background risk is log-concave. Comparisons with expected utility criteria indicate that the conditions for the Omega threshold to represent risk aversion are comparable to those for exponential utility functions.

Summary: In this study, we investigate a supply chain system consisting of a retailer and a supplier. We examine the threshold problem in contract design and take into account the risk preference of the retailer and the fairness concern of the supplier. The experiment shows that the behavior of the retailer affects the threshold of the optimal contract design, while the behavior of the supplier only affects the optimal wholesale price. These findings suggest that the behavior of retailers and suppliers play a crucial role in the mechanism design of supply chains.
