Hydrothermal vent periphery invertebrate community habitat preferences of the Lau Basin

Summary: The Eastern Lau Spreading Center is a back-arc basin with active hydrothermal vents, characterized by gradients of geological and chemical variables along the north-south axis. The type of rock substrate does not affect the distribution of invertebrate communities, but location might, possibly due to sulfide concentration. In peripheral vent habitats, energy availability and food availability are more important than rock substrate in structuring communities.

Iron ligands and isotopes in hydrothermal plumes over backarc volcanoes in the Northeast Lau Basin, Southwest Pacific Ocean

Summary: Deep-sea hydrothermal venting is an important source of dissolved iron to the oceans. This study investigates the evolution of Fe isotopes in hydrothermal plumes, finding that the variation in plumes is related to the loss of particulate Fe-sulfides or Fe-oxyhydroxides, and the δ(56)dFe compositions in plumes increase during dispersal/dilution. The data demonstrate how Fe isotopes are transformed within a hydrothermal plume above arc volcanoes.

A multi-proxy approach to constrain reducing conditions in the Baltic Basin during the late Silurian Lau carbon isotope excursion

Summary: The Silurian period was marked by significant climatic and sea level changes, biotic crises, and carbon cycle volatility. Research on late Silurian has focused on global marine redox conditions, but this study examines variability in local paleo-redox conditions using paleo-redox proxies in carbonate and clastic sequences from Sweden and Latvia. The results show that the sediments in both locations were influenced by different levels of oxygen deficiency, with sediments on the deep shelf deposited in a denitrifying water column before and during the carbon isotope excursion event.

Geologic and Structural Evolution of the NE Lau Basin, Tonga: Morphotectonic Analysis and Classification of Structures Using Shallow Seismicity

Microseismicity and Lava Flows Hint at Magmato-Tectonic Processes Near the Southern Tip of the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center in the Lau Basin

Summary: The researchers located 697 micro-earthquakes at the southern Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center and found that most epicenters concentrated along the central region of the axial valley, with a majority of events associated with a 138-hour lasting earthquake swarm. The tectonic structure of the ridge axis in the S-FRSC resembles a series of left-stepping en echelon segments expressed at the seafloor by numerous volcanic ridges.

Summary: The study examines iron and sulfur isotopic compositions of polymetallic sulfides from an extinct hydrothermal mound near the Kings Triple Junction of the northern Lau basin. The results indicate enrichment of heavy sulfur isotopes in sulfides, suggesting a substantial contribution of heavy isotope-rich sulfate-S from seawater, while changes in iron isotopic compositions are mainly due to redox processes and mineral zoning development during sulfide deposit formation.

Extension Dynamics of the Northern Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center and the Southern Mangatolu Triple Junction in the Lau Basin at 16°S

Summary: Due to limited seismic data and the complexity of magnetic anomaly maps, the tectonic evolution of the northern Lau Basin has remained unclear. Using a multi-method approach, we reconstructed the formation of the basin at approximately 16 degrees S and identified a crustal zonation that reflects the subduction input at the time of its formation. The analysis of compiled data sets revealed a complex tectonic history, including a dynamically moving spreading center and changes in magma supply. The opening mechanisms of the two arms of the Overlapping Spreading Center showed significant differences, coinciding with variations in subduction input and geochemical composition.

Summary: The South Eastern Futuna Volcanic Zone is a unique area in the Lau back-arc basin with abundant volcanic, tectonic, and hydrothermal activities. The rocks in this region are formed through multiple stages, including transitions from basalts to andesites, as well as assimilation and mixing processes. The special geological conditions in this area facilitate the complex magmatic processes.

Does the Protection of River Basin Ecosystems Produce Broken Window Effect? Evidence From Spatial Choice Experiment in Xijiang River Basin, China

Summary: Eco-environmental protection and compensation for damages in river basins have long been important issues in global research. Previous studies have focused on the correlation between individual socioeconomic characteristics, ecological cognition, and differences in willingness to pay, but little research has been conducted from the perspective of perceived environmental quality. This study used a spatial choice experiment to investigate public willingness to pay for ecosystem restoration in different parts of the Xijiang River Basin in China. The results indicate that the Broken Windows Theory can better explain the differences in willingness to pay, with individuals in better ecological environments being more willing to pay for higher restoration levels.

Effusive and explosive volcanism on the northern Futuna Ridge, Lau Basin: A combined bathymetric, magnetic and seismic investigation

Neutron phase contrast imaging of PbWO4 crystals for G experiment test masses using a Talbot-Lau neutron interferometer

Summary: The use of transparent test/source masses can benefit future measurements of Newton's gravitational constant G by enabling nondestructive, quantitative internal density gradient measurements using optical interferometry and allowing in-situ optical metrology methods. The upper bound on possible internal density gradients in lead tungstate (PbWO4) crystals was determined using a Talbot-Lau neutron interferometer, indicating that the value is about two orders of magnitude smaller than required for G measurements. Other nondestructive methods for characterization of internal density inhomogeneities in test masses for G experiments are also discussed.

Different methods are used to estimate vertical diffusive heat fluxes, including temperature measurements, parameterization, and kinetic energy parameterization.

Summary: In order to protect the range of habitats, species, and ecosystem functions in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ), the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has designated nine Areas of Particular Environmental Interest (APEIs). This study focuses on APEI-6, the most north eastern APEI in the network, and assesses its representativity of mining contract areas in the eastern CCZ. The findings suggest that APEI-6 is partially representative of the exploration areas to the south yet is distinctly different in several key characteristics, indicating the need for additional APEIs and other management activities to mitigate the impacts of mining in the CCZ.
