The spatial and temporal distributions of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was studied in the East-Frisian Wadden Sea (Southern North Sea) during several cruises between 2002 and 2005. The spatial distribution of CDOM in the German Bight shows a strong gradient towards the coast. Tidal and seasonal variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) identify freshwater discharge via flood-gates at the coastline and pore water efflux from tidal flat sediments as the most important CDOM sources within the backbarrier area of the Island of Spiekeroog. However, the amount and pattern of CDOM and DOC is strongly affected by various parameters, e.g. changes in the amount of terrestrial run-off, precipitation, evaporation, biological activity and photooxidation. A decoupling of CDOM and DOC, especially during periods of pronounced biological activity (algae blooms and microbial activity), is observed in spring and especially in summer. Mixing of the endmembers freshwater, pore water, and open sea water results in the formation of a coastal transition zone. Whilst an almost conservative behaviour during mixing is observed in winter, summer data point towards non-conservative mixing.

Season-dependent effects of ZnO nanoparticles and elevated temperature on bioenergetics of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis

Summary: Exposure to zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) had significant effects on carbohydrate levels and electron transport system activity in blue mussels. Moderate winter warming may partially compensate for the bioenergetics stress caused by nZnO toxicity, while summer warming led to decreases in lipid and carbohydrate levels.

Redox control on the tungsten isotope composition of seawater

Florian Kurzweil, Corey Archer, Martin Wille, Ronny Schoenberg, Carsten Munker, Olaf Dellwig

Summary: The isotope composition of tungsten can trace the rise of oceanic oxygen on early Earth. Experimental studies show that manganese oxides preferentially scavenge light tungsten isotopes, increasing the surrounding seawater's ?186/184W, while redissolution decreases it. The heavy stable tungsten isotope signature in open ocean seawater reflects predominantly fully oxic conditions in modern oceans.

Human influence on the continental Si budget during the last 4300 years: δ30 Sidiatom in varved lake sediments (Tiefer See, NE Germany)

Summary: The study demonstrates that variations in silicon isotopes in varved lake sediments are related to changes in vegetation cover, soil disturbance, and human activities. Early deforestation led to increased export of isotopically light dissolved silica to the lake, as cultivation intensified, burial flux of biogenic silica in lake sediments increased due to enhanced nutrient supply from the watershed.

Anatomy of the Major Baltic Inflow in 2014: Impact of manganese and iron shuttling on phosphorus and trace metals in the Gotland Basin, Baltic Sea

Olaf Dellwig, Antje Wegwerth, Helge W. Arz

Summary: The study found that Major Baltic Inflows have a limited impact on the water column P inventory and eutrophication level of the Gotland Basin, as insufficient Fe availability prevents efficient trapping of phosphate. The fast recovery of reducing conditions only allows short-term storage of Mn-Fe-P mineral phases in the surface sediment. Trace metals such as V and W show intermittent depletion in the water column, but are released back into the water column due to re-establishing reducing conditions.

Summary: The Baltic Sea, with its strongly stratified water structure and densely populated catchment, is one of the most polluted seas. Understanding its circulation pattern and time scale is crucial for predicting ecological issues. Research has shown that anthropogenic U-236 and U-233 are useful tracers in oceanic studies, but their application in the Baltic Sea is limited by unclear input history and inadequate monitoring records.

Summary: The study explores the potential of stable W isotopes as a paleoredox proxy, with an analysis of Precambrian igneous rocks and modern Black Sea sediments to validate its applicability. Results indicate that the δW-186/184 values of black shales can help distinguish between different depositional environments.

Hot and heavy: Responses of ragworms (Hediste diversicolor) to copper-spiked sediments and elevated temperature

Duy Nghia Pham, Julie Angelina Kopplin, Olaf Dellwig, Eugene P. Sokolova, Inna M. Sokolova

Summary: Sediment contamination and seawater warming are two major stressors for estuary benthos. This study investigated the combined effects of metal-contaminated sediment and increased temperature on an estuarine polychaete, Hediste diversicolor. The results showed that the combined effects were mostly additive, with copper being a weak stressor and warming a more potent stressor. This study highlights the importance of energy-related biomarkers and the search for more conserved molecular markers to assess metal exposure in H. diversicolor.
