Summary: This study compared differences between IUD users and non-users among women hospitalised with a diagnosis of PID. Patients with an IUD insertion-associated PID had milder disease presentation and shorter length of stay. PID inpatients who carry an IUD represent a specific subset of patients with less severe disease.

Summary: The study investigates the cytokine status in newborns infected with perinatal infections, depending on their body weight. The results show a predominance of the anti-inflammatory component in newborns with different body weights, indicating a Th-cell-mediated immune response prevalence. The practical value lies in applying the results to develop effective methods to counteract intrauterine infections.

Summary: Despite a slight decrease in age-standardized rates, PID and EP continue to be public health burdens with a strong correlation. Effective interventions and strategies should be established according to the local situation by policymakers.

Summary: Pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility can often develop in females after Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection, but identifying the exact causative agent is challenging due to the lack of definitive immunological tests. The extensive antigenic variability of N. gonorrhoeae and its manipulation of the human immune system are key factors in understanding the pathogenesis and improving diagnostic methods for these conditions.

Summary: Reservoirs account for about 10% of the freshwater stored in lakes worldwide. Reservoir ecosystems have both positive and negative implications for sustainable development, supporting a majority of UN SDGs, but also leading to negative trade-offs for some targets. Exploration of linkages between reservoir ecosystems and SDGs is crucial for guiding sustainable management and integration into the UN framework.

Summary: Penyanling has shown anti-inflammatory effects on PID rats by suppressing cell infiltrations and inflammatory mediator release, as well as promoting the production of lipoxin A4. It can also regulate NF-kappa B signal pathway and enhance inflammation resolution, with its main components being flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, and alkaloids.

Summary: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a form of long-acting reversible contraception that carry risks and potential adverse effects. Common complications include pain and irregular bleeding, while more serious but less frequent complications include expulsion, contraception failure, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and perforation. This case report highlights the development of significant complications, such as multiple intra-abdominal abscesses and PID, in a patient with a history of IUD placement in the immediate postpartum period.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of perforation and expulsion associated with levonorgestrel-releasing and copper intrauterine devices in clinical practice in the United States. The study found that levonorgestrel-releasing devices were associated with an increased risk of uterine perforation and a decreased risk of expulsion compared to copper devices.

Summary: Air pollution, especially PM2.5, is the largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death, primarily caused by fossil fuel combustion. PM2.5 exposure is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases through oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the transmission and endorgan mechanisms responsible for PM2.5-induced impaired function in metabolic active organs are not fully understood.

Summary: Many women with lower genital tract infections associated with sexually transmitted pathogens may have evidence of upper genital tract inflammation, despite the absence of traditional symptoms and signs of PID. New biomarkers are needed to identify these women with clinically mild or subclinical PID, in order to initiate early treatment and alleviate the sequelae associated with upper genital tract infection and inflammation.

Summary: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is associated with a wide range of potential causal pathogens, including sexually transmitted organisms, BV-associated species, and organisms usually found in the gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts. Broad screening and diagnostic and treatment strategies are needed to reduce the burden of PID and its associated sequelae as gonorrhea or chlamydia are only found in a minority of cases.
