Summary: Sleeve gastrectomy is a commonly performed bariatric surgery, with rising prevalence of gastric sleeve stenosis (GSS). Management with pneumatic dilation is successful but underused due to lack of diagnostic criteria. This study aimed to develop quantifiable endoscopic criteria for GSS diagnosis, finding an association between narrowest to widest gastric lumen diameter ratio and presence of bilious fluid with EndoFLIP and gastric lumen morphology diagnosis. Further studies are needed to validate these criteria.

Summary: This study analyzed the safety and efficacy of a 12-month intra-gastric balloon (IGB) for the treatment of overweight and obesity. The results demonstrated sustained weight loss until the device removal at 12 months, with increased weight loss observed in patients who had regular follow-up consultations. The adverse events associated with the IGB were comparable to published literature, indicating its safety.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of vitamin D concentrations and preoperative metabolic phenotypes on the remission of CNCDs after RYGB. The results suggest that preoperative vitamin D adequacy may have a protective effect on metabolic health, even in the presence of an unhealthy phenotype.

Summary: A mouse model for one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) surgery was generated and characterized in this study. The results showed that OAGB-operated mice exhibited significant differences in weight, blood parameters, and energy metabolism compared to sham-operated mice. This model provides a basis for studying the effects of OAGB surgery.

Summary: The study found no significant difference in nutritional status at the 6-month follow-up between patients undergoing RYGB and OAGB surgery. Both procedures may lead to malnutrition, with OAGB potentially more effective in inducing remission of type II diabetes and hypertension. More large prospective studies are needed to confirm the impact of different bypass procedures on nutritional status.

Summary: The contact system was affected 6 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Absolute values of kallikrein generation before and after surgery correlated with contact system proteins, whereas changes after surgery associated with changes in C1-inh and metabolic variables.

Summary: Among patients with severe obesity undergoing SG and RYGB, significantly more weight loss was observed at 5 years compared to nonsurgical patients. Weight regain was common after surgery, but regain to within 5% of baseline was rare.

Summary: Left gastric artery embolisation (LGAE) is a treatment option for major upper gastrointestinal bleeding and has shown potential for weight loss. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy, mechanism of action, safety profile, and effects on obesity-related comorbidities of LGAE.

Summary: Preoperative weight loss before bariatric surgery can reduce long-term complications, but the evidence for short-term or perioperative complications is insufficient. This review examines recent evidence on various dietary protocols and their correlation with weight loss and surgical complications. Further controlled studies are needed to determine the optimal preoperative dietary treatment for weight loss before bariatric surgery.

Summary: This study tested the effects of soluble corn fiber (SCF) on fractional calcium absorption, biochemical parameters, and the fecal microbiome in a post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) population. The results showed that SCF had no significant effects on calcium absorption, calciotropic hormones, or bone turnover markers. However, there was a wide variation in the impact of SCF, which may be due to the degree of gut microbiome alteration. The study demonstrated that daily SCF consumption was well tolerated in the post-RYGB population.

Summary: The chronic low-grade inflammation associated with obesity can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction. This study investigated the effects of RYGB surgery on oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dynamics in obese women. The results showed that RYGB surgery improved prooxidant and inflammatory status and enhanced mitochondrial dynamics in leukocytes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a preoperative weight management program centered on orlistat and its impact on the results of one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). The results showed that two-thirds of patients who underwent OAGB had weight loss through the orlistat-containing regimen and dietary adjustment in the preoperative period, but no further weight loss was observed at 2 years post-surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the use of opioids in patients with obesity who underwent bariatric surgery versus those who underwent intensive lifestyle modification. The results showed that patients who underwent bariatric surgery had a higher proportion of opioid users and a larger total opioid dose, especially in those who received additional surgery during follow-up.

Summary: In this study, 107 patients with postsurgical portal vein thrombosis were retrospectively analyzed, revealing that the type of surgery, degree of thrombosis occlusion, and type of anticoagulant used significantly influenced the outcomes. Failure to achieve complete radiographic resolution of portal vein thrombosis was associated with a greater risk of developing clinical portal hypertension in the future.

Summary: Attentional bias to food after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery was investigated in this study. The findings suggest that all patients consciously orient their attention towards food cues, indicating its relevance for weight control. A significant difference in attentional bias to food stimuli at 500 ms was observed between patients with preoperative BMI higher and lower than 50 kg/m(2), implying that food stimuli have a higher incentive salience for those with higher preoperative weight, which might contribute to the risk of weight regain.
