Summary: Overweight and obesity are associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). Bariatric surgery (BS) can induce sustained weight loss and may be an ideal treatment for preventing AF. Previous studies have not definitively established the role of weight loss and BS in preventing AF. This meta-analysis evaluates the role of weight loss through BS in preventing incident AF in obesity.

Summary: Obese women have a significantly different vaginal microbiota composition and higher levels of local inflammation compared to non-obese women. Bariatric surgery does not alter the vaginal microbiota, but those who experience the greatest weight loss post-surgery are more likely to have a Lactobacillus-dominant VMB.

Summary: Although bariatric surgery leads to significant long-term weight loss, weight gain after surgery affects a considerable percentage of patients. Additionally, some patients experience inadequate weight loss. The effectiveness of anti-obesity medications for post-operative weight gain has not been firmly established yet due to varying study populations and designs. Observational studies consistently show the benefits of medical weight management after bariatric surgery, particularly with liraglutide, topiramate, and phentermine/topiramate, while new anti-obesity medications are expected to be helpful for post-surgical weight optimization.

Summary: This study found substantial variability in the percent total weight loss following bariatric surgery, with functional brain imaging showing more variance in post-surgical weight loss than psychological or metabolic information. The neuronal responses during anticipatory cues and receipt of drops of milkshake differed between individuals with severe obesity and healthy-weight controls, with changes in brain response related to a composite health index. Despite no correlation with post-surgical weight loss in the entire surgical group, participants who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) showed predictive power in several regions and contrasts.

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationship between macronutrient intake and weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS). Eight articles involving 2,378 subjects were included, and the results indicated that protein intake was positively associated with weight loss after BS. Prioritizing protein followed by carbohydrates and reducing lipid intake favored weight loss and weight stability after BS. The review suggests that a high-protein diet (>60 g to 90 g/day) may be beneficial for weight loss and maintenance after BS, but a balance of other macronutrients is also important.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the existing research on the clinical impact of a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery, focusing on its effects on weight loss and improvement in comorbidities. Although the current knowledge is limited, the findings suggest that adopting a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery is of significant value.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the safety and short-term results of bariatric procedures such as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric plication, and intragastric balloon in the treatment of obesity. The results showed that these procedures are safe and effective methods of weight loss and improvement of comorbidities and metabolic parameters.

Summary: Obesity is associated with increased risk of complications following total joint arthroplasty (TJA), but the current literature is observational and heterogeneous, and BMI as a sole measure has flaws. Instead of solely relying on BMI <40 cutoff, considering preoperative weight loss of 5 to 10% is recommended. Using BMI cutoffs may limit access to care for vulnerable populations. The practice of demanding mandatory weight loss needs to be reconsidered until convincing evidence supports the risk reduction from preoperative weight loss.

Summary: This study found that body image plays a more important role than BMI in influencing the psychological health of obese patients. Therefore, body image should be considered in the assessment and treatment of patients requiring bariatric treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the basic taste identification, induced perception, and pleasantness in normal-weight controls and obese subjects before and after bariatric surgery. The findings revealed that the perception of basic tastes is similar in normal-weight and severely obese subjects. Sleeve-gastrectomy-induced weight loss significantly increases basic taste-induced intensity, and selectively reduces bitter-related pleasantness without affecting the ability to identify the tastes.

Summary: A study was conducted on patients who underwent bariatric surgery to investigate the factors affecting weight loss and the effectiveness of prophylactic ursodeoxycholic acid against gallstone formation. It was found that weight loss was influenced by initial body weight, sex, and dietary intake. Rapid weight loss was associated with a higher incidence of cholelithiasis.

Summary: Cross-efficiency evaluates the performance of decision making units (DMUs) from the perspective of all others using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) weights. However, the existing methodology is limited by the presence of alternate optima for the weights, leading to different results. This paper proposes a new approach that focuses on reducing the sensitivity of results to weight choices by using reference sets instead of individual DMUs.

Summary: The use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners in foods has increased in recent years. However, the health impact of these sweeteners is still unclear. A study in Spain found that 9.3% of foods in the market contained sweeteners, with sucralose and acesulfame K being the most frequently used sweeteners. Foods with sweeteners were more likely to have health and nutrition claims, and had lower sugar and energy content. The nutrient profile of yogurts and biscuits with sweeteners also changed.

Summary: This study developed a reproducible tool for objective reviews of scientific literature based on artificial intelligence applied to natural language processing. The tool was used to analyze 1601 research manuscripts and 136 patents to provide an objective state of the art on the antibacterial activity of Cistus genus plant extracts. The results reveal the most studied Cistus species, commonly used plant parts, and solvents, as well as the most susceptible bacterial species.

Summary: Organic food and drink is a growing market, but the belief that it is healthier is unfounded. A comprehensive study of six specific organic food types shows that 81% of them are considered less healthy. While organic foods have a slightly better nutrient profile than conventional foods, the differences are not nutritionally significant. Organic foods also use nutrition claims more frequently, but rarely fortify with micronutrients.

Summary: This study provides an exhaustive analysis of processed foods with fibre-related nutrition claims, showing that as many as 88.7% of these foods are classified as 'less healthy'. When compared to foods without these claims, similar results were obtained. Therefore, processed foods with fibre-related nutrition claims are not healthy and do not have a better nutritional profile.
