BMI and %EBMIL are the most accurate methods for comparing results of patients after bariatric surgery. %EBMIL is based on BMI 25 as a constant end-point for all patients, but BMI 25 is easily achieved by patients with BMI < 50, whereas it is not so feasible for patients with BMI > 50. We were prompted to obtain by statistical methods a mathematical formula able to calculate the final BMI (FBMI) 3 years after the operation, dependent on the initial or preoperative BMI (IBMI) of a multicenter group of morbid obese patients operated with different bariatric techniques. We also obtained a specific formula for each bariatric procedure of this group of patients. We propose the name Predicted BMI for the value obtained with these formulas and its application in the %EBMIL instead of the constant value of BMI 25. We have analyzed the IBMI and FBMI of a multicenter group of 7,410 patients, subjected to different bariatric procedures with a minimum follow-up of 36 months. Statistical methods with a linear regression model have been used to obtain the two types (global and specific) of Predicted BMI. We first obtained a general formula of PBMI = IBMI x 0.4 + 11.75 for the total population of patients, and a second specific formula for each bariatric technique: PBMI - IBMI x 0.43 + 13.25 + technique_correction_adjustment (.) Predicted BMI and its application to the %EBMIL may result in a more rational comparison of results of bariatric patients, bariatric techniques, and groups of bariatric surgeons. Predicted BMI may advance the BMI that each patient would probably achieve after surgery.

Sodium Content of Foods Sold in the Spanish Market. Results from the BADALI Project

Marta Beltra, Fernando Borras, Ana B. Ropero

Summary: High sodium/salt intake is a risk factor for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and most foods in the Spanish market contain high levels of sodium. Efforts should be made to reduce salt content in processed foods and ready meals to lower sodium intake.

Summary: Dry eye disease (DED) is difficult to detect in young contact lens (CL) wearers. The study found that OSDI B and C questions contribute significantly to classifying symptomatic CL wearers. However, in identifying symptomatic eyeglass (EG) wearers, all OSDI questions contribute equally.

Peer evaluation through cross-efficiency based on reference sets

Summary: Cross-efficiency evaluates the performance of decision making units (DMUs) from the perspective of all others using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) weights. However, the existing methodology is limited by the presence of alternate optima for the weights, leading to different results. This paper proposes a new approach that focuses on reducing the sensitivity of results to weight choices by using reference sets instead of individual DMUs.

Nutritional Description of Foods with Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners in Spain: The BADALI Project

Summary: The use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners in foods has increased in recent years. However, the health impact of these sweeteners is still unclear. A study in Spain found that 9.3% of foods in the market contained sweeteners, with sucralose and acesulfame K being the most frequently used sweeteners. Foods with sweeteners were more likely to have health and nutrition claims, and had lower sugar and energy content. The nutrient profile of yogurts and biscuits with sweeteners also changed.

Summary: This study developed a reproducible tool for objective reviews of scientific literature based on artificial intelligence applied to natural language processing. The tool was used to analyze 1601 research manuscripts and 136 patents to provide an objective state of the art on the antibacterial activity of Cistus genus plant extracts. The results reveal the most studied Cistus species, commonly used plant parts, and solvents, as well as the most susceptible bacterial species.

Nutritional Description of Organic and Conventional Food Products in Spain: The BADALI Project

Ana Ropero, Fernando Borras, Marta Rodriguez, Marta Beltra

Summary: Organic food and drink is a growing market, but the belief that it is healthier is unfounded. A comprehensive study of six specific organic food types shows that 81% of them are considered less healthy. While organic foods have a slightly better nutrient profile than conventional foods, the differences are not nutritionally significant. Organic foods also use nutrition claims more frequently, but rarely fortify with micronutrients.

Nutritional Description of Processed Foods with Fibre-Related Nutrition Claims in Spain: The BADALI Project

Ana B. Ropero, Fernando Borras, Marta Rodriguez, Marta Beltra

Summary: This study provides an exhaustive analysis of processed foods with fibre-related nutrition claims, showing that as many as 88.7% of these foods are classified as 'less healthy'. When compared to foods without these claims, similar results were obtained. Therefore, processed foods with fibre-related nutrition claims are not healthy and do not have a better nutritional profile.
