Summary: The prevailing recommendations on reporting weight loss after bariatric and metabolic surgery are not evidence-based, as the suggested outcome metric of percentage excess weight loss (%EWL) is inaccurate and error-sensitive. The Dutch Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends stopping the use of %EWL and calls on the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) to promote this evidence-based recommendation.

Summary: In our recent study, we found no evidence to suggest that fatty liver disease increases the risk of dementia or impairs cognitive function, regardless of the duration of follow-up. We appreciate Dr. Gupta's interest in our findings.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy and safety of oral semaglutide in overweight or obese adults without type 2 diabetes. The findings showed that oral semaglutide 50 mg once per day led to a significantly greater reduction in bodyweight compared to placebo. Gastrointestinal adverse events were the most common side effects. Oral semaglutide could be an effective option for weight management.

Summary: Sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, frailty, and cachexia all involve skeletal muscle as a main component. Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging is the reference method for measuring skeletal muscle mass, but dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry appendicular lean mass can serve as a practical surrogate. This study developed and validated prediction equations for total body and extremity skeletal muscle mass using a large sample, providing an important opportunity for evaluating skeletal muscle mass in research and clinical settings.

Summary: Several cross-sectional studies have shown an association between hair cortisol concentration and adiposity, but the relationship with longitudinal changes in measures of adiposity remains largely unknown. In this study of 786 adults who achieved successful weight loss, increased hair cortisol concentration during a 12-month weight loss maintenance period was associated with slightly higher body weight variability in the subsequent 6 months.

Summary: This review analyzed qualitative data to explore the barriers and facilitators of weight loss and weight loss maintenance. Four aggregate themes were identified: internal factors, program-specific factors, social factors, and environmental factors. The findings highlight the importance of considering participant acceptability and engagement in future interventions, and suggest strategies such as tailored interventions, relapse management plans, and strategies to enhance motivation and emotional self-regulation.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between certain obesity-related genetic variants and anthropometric changes during weight loss interventions. While specific SNPs in the MC4R gene were found to be significantly associated with weight and BMI reduction, SNPs in other genes showed no significant correlation with anthropometric parameters. Overall, the study concluded that these investigated SNPs do not play a consistent role in anthropometric changes during behavioral weight loss interventions.

Summary: This study investigated the most widespread rapid weight loss methods and sources of influence used by grappling athletes. The results showed that a majority of athletes engaged in rapid weight loss prior to weigh-in, with coaches and teammates being the most influential sources. There were also differences between male and female athletes in terms of sources of influence and weight loss methods used.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that probiotic supplementation can significantly reduce BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference in overweight and obese patients, but the effect on body weight is not significant. Although there is a positive trend, further research is needed before recommending probiotics as a therapeutic strategy for these patients.

Summary: Achieving long-term weight loss in people with obesity is difficult, highlighting the need for effective pharmacotherapy. New poly-agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, have shown promising results in terms of weight loss. However, the long-term efficacy, safety, and economic implications of chronic pharmacotherapy for obesity need to be further analyzed.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between changes in circulating metabolites during diet-induced weight loss and changes in adiposity, finding significant associations between lipid species and citric acid with body weight and adiposity reduction. The results also show that changes in lysophosphatidylcholines and citric acid concentrations during weight loss are linked to adiposity regain and loss during the maintenance period, highlighting the importance of adipose lipid metabolism in weight and adiposity maintenance.

Summary: There is significant controversy surrounding the clinical benefits and risks of weight loss interventions for individuals with obesity. Traditional weight-centric approaches may increase weight stigma and cycling without sufficient evidence to support their purported clinical benefits. However, metabolic surgery and pharmacotherapy show clear benefits in certain cases.
