Summary: This study tested the effects of soluble corn fiber (SCF) on fractional calcium absorption, biochemical parameters, and the fecal microbiome in a post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) population. The results showed that SCF had no significant effects on calcium absorption, calciotropic hormones, or bone turnover markers. However, there was a wide variation in the impact of SCF, which may be due to the degree of gut microbiome alteration. The study demonstrated that daily SCF consumption was well tolerated in the post-RYGB population.

Summary: Revisional surgery to convert sleeve gastrectomy (SG) to either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or duodenal switch (DS) can lead to significant and sustained weight loss in the first 12 months. There was no significant difference in excess body weight loss between RYGB and DS patients at 6, 12, and 24 months, except for greater weight loss in RYGB patients at 3 months. Procedure length was significantly longer for DS compared to RYGB, with no significant differences in length of stay and 30-day readmission rates.

Summary: This study compared the early outcomes and mid-term safety of One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) and primary Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), finding comparable results in efficacy and adverse events. OAGB showed advantages in operative time and costs, while both procedures were similar in terms of weight outcomes and adverse events.

Summary: Various equations have been proposed to estimate Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in adults, but none have shown good accuracy in predicting REE in older adults with severe obesity. This study aimed to develop and validate new predictive equations for REE in Italian older adults with severe obesity, with the new equations showing higher accuracy compared to existing equations.

Summary: One-anastomosis gastric bypass surgery can improve the serum fatty acid levels in obese patients, but after 6 to 9 months postoperatively, it does not completely normalize to the levels of the healthy, lean population. Further supplementation may be needed to restore proper fatty acid levels.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of vitamin D on body weight loss in women who had previously undergone RYGB. The results showed that vitamin D deficiency does not interfere with weight loss in the two-year follow-up after RYGB, and there may be a differential response to vitamin D preoperatively and postoperatively.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in bariatric surgery patients. The results showed that OAGB had superior effects on weight loss, improvement of type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea, while SG was associated with more long-term problems such as insufficient weight loss/regain and reflux. However, OAGB had a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Summary: Morbid obesity is a chronic disease with a rising incidence, and surgical treatment has shown superior outcomes compared to conventional weight loss measures. This study evaluated the long-term weight loss outcomes, comorbidity reduction, and adverse effects of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD), and Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) at 10 years. RYGB and BPD resulted in significant weight loss, with no observed differences in diabetes resolution and adverse outcomes. Longer follow-up reports are important for comparing the outcomes of different bariatric operations.

Summary: This case-control study analyzed the macrophage infiltration in subcutaneous adipose tissue after bariatric surgery or conservative treatment of obesity, and investigated whether these features could predict weight loss outcome. The study found a significant decline in crown-like structures (CLS) density after surgery, regardless of weight loss. However, surgery had no effect on the infiltration of single-cell macrophages, and the abundance of these macrophage populations before surgery did not predict weight loss or response to surgery.

Summary: According to the latest IFSO recommendations, bariatric and metabolic surgery is recommended for patients with a BMI above 35 kg/m(2) to achieve weight loss and improve comorbidities. Patients with obesity have a higher incidence of GERD, for which Nissen fundoplication has been the standard treatment. However, gastric bypass is a valid option for obese patients. In this case report, a patient who previously underwent laparoscopic Nissen surgery for GERD experienced intrathoracic migration and symptoms, and revision bariatric surgery was offered. The video presents the performance of OAGB in this patient, which is a more complex procedure but provides good symptom control.

Summary: The study found no significant difference in nutritional status at the 6-month follow-up between patients undergoing RYGB and OAGB surgery. Both procedures may lead to malnutrition, with OAGB potentially more effective in inducing remission of type II diabetes and hypertension. More large prospective studies are needed to confirm the impact of different bypass procedures on nutritional status.

Summary: The prevalence of obesity has been increasing rapidly in recent decades, making it one of the most impacting diseases on global health. It is a chronic disease associated with various comorbidities that result in a reduced life expectancy and quality of life. The treatment of obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach by a specialized medical team and can be done through conservative or surgical treatments. Vertical gastrectomy, mixed techniques, and gastric bypass are the most commonly used surgical techniques. The choice of technique should consider the characteristics of each patient and the surgical team's experience.

Summary: The study aimed to validate the accuracy of using carbon dioxide production measurements as a surrogate for measuring energy expenditure in mechanically ventilated children. The results showed that regardless of the metabolic, anthropometric, or clinical status, this method was not recommended.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of food intake on body weight loss and the association of gene polymorphisms 1 year after RYGB surgery. The results showed that energy and macronutrient intake did not predict greater body weight loss, and none of the gene polymorphisms investigated affected energy intake among female patients.
