Summary: Over the past three decades, the mortality rate of high BMI-attributed stroke has decreased among females and increased among males, with projections showing these trends continuing in the future. Furthermore, the proportion of elderly individuals with high BMI-attributed stroke mortality is expected to gradually increase in both men and women. More health-promoting efforts are needed, especially for the elderly and males.

Summary: As obesity becomes more prevalent in the United States, the incidence of obesity-related kidney disease is also rising. Obesity itself is an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease, and its pathophysiology is complex. Obesity-related kidney disease includes obesity-related glomerulopathy and fatty kidney disease. Treatment strategies include lifestyle interventions and medication.

Summary: This study presents an emergency medical logistics model for rapid response to public health emergencies. The proposed methodology consists of two recursive mechanisms: time-varying forecasting of medical resources and emergency medical resource allocation. By maximizing the weighted demand satisfaction rate and minimizing the total vehicle travel distance, the study develops a bi-objective optimization model to determine the optimal medical resource allocation plan.

Summary: Recent advances in indoor localization techniques have been widely adopted in various industries. However, existing systems using RF-based ranging techniques are susceptible to interference. In this study, we evaluated and compared the accuracy and precision of alternative RF-based devices in different indoor spaces, and found that ultra-wide band transceivers consistently outperform other alternatives in hostile environments.

Summary: Since 1980, obesity prevalence among US adults has increased significantly despite a decrease in energy intake and a modest increase in physical activity. The relationship between rising obesity and food processing, gut microbial composition, host metabolic expenditure, and intergenerational risk transmission is complex and requires further research. Alternative hypotheses should be considered and tested to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Summary: The study compared resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in obese patients who responded or did not respond to sleeve gastrectomy (SG) with a control group of obese patients. The results showed that responders had lower RSFC in the default mode and frontoparietal networks compared to controls and non-responders. Non-responders had higher RSFC in the lateral visual network compared to controls. In terms of between-network RSFC, responders had higher anti-correlation between executive control and salience networks compared to controls and non-responders. There was a positive correlation between the percentage of excess weight loss and the RSFC between the executive control and salience networks.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of telemedicine in emergency medicine due to increased patient volumes, staff shortages, and limited resources. The virtual first (VF) program connects patients with emergency medicine clinicians through virtual video visits, reducing unnecessary emergency department visits and redirecting patients to appropriate care settings. VF video visits can improve patient outcomes by providing early intervention for acute care needs and enhance patient satisfaction by offering convenient and personalized care. However, challenges include the lack of physical examination, clinician telehealth training, and the need for a robust telemedicine infrastructure. Digital health equity is also crucial for equitable access to care. Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of VF video visits in emergency medicine are significant, and this study is a strong step towards building evidence for these advancements.

Summary: Edge computing is a key feature of 5G technology that enables new and improved automotive use cases for road safety and emergency response management. This paper presents an algorithm that enhances the accuracy of estimated time of arrival (ETA) notifications for approaching emergency vehicles on highways. The algorithm uses real travel time data to evaluate its performance, comparing different methods such as Kalman filter, Filter-less method, Moving Average, and Exponential Moving Average filters. It is found that the Kalman filter provides the highest accuracy, reducing estimation error by an average of 14%.

Summary: Epidemics can lead to declines in host population genetic diversity, and this can have long-term effects on the evolution of resistance and subsequent epidemic sizes. However, the loss of genetic diversity can also make hosts more vulnerable to future epidemics. The presence of diapausing life stages in many host organisms further complicates this relationship, as they allow for host dispersal through time and can affect host genetic diversity and future epidemics. In a study on Daphnia magna and its bacterial parasite Pasteuria ramosa, researchers found that early initiation of diapause led to increased host genetic diversity and reduced epidemic sizes in the following year, regardless of environmental disturbance.

Summary: This study highlights changes in dietary habits and physical activity levels among adult residents of Poland, Austria, and the United Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Findings showed decreased shopping frequency, increased interest in online shopping, and higher consumption of specific food groups. Additionally, there was a marked reduction in physical activity and an increase in alcohol consumption, potentially contributing to body weight changes and health consequences.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a group of metabolic abnormalities that have a high prevalence and economic burden worldwide. Fasting has emerged as a dietary method for controlling metabolic risk factors, although the effects on humans are still unclear. Preclinical studies have shown positive effects on gut microbiota, glucose and insulin metabolism, weight and visceral fat, and lipid metabolism. However, results from human studies are conflicting and more research is needed.

Summary: Obesity is a significant issue with diverse health consequences. Current treatment options include lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery, but they all have limitations due to factors like comorbidities, cost, age, and location. The pharmacotherapy of obesity is a rapidly growing field, with various drugs available. This paper provides an overview of studies on these drugs and their potential use in personalized treatment approaches.

Summary: This study investigates the mental health and wellbeing outcomes and experiences in emergency responder (ER) families, as well as the prevalence, risk factors, and protective factors associated with these outcomes. The findings suggest limited evidence regarding the prevalence of mental health and wellbeing outcomes in ER families. Risk factors include work-stress spillover and traumatic exposure concerns, while protective factors include social support. Improving knowledge in this area is important for targeted interventions, public health, and supporting the effectiveness of ERs.
