Objective: To estimate the age-adjusted prevalence of general and centralized obesity among Chinese men living in urban Shanghai. Methods and Procedures: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 61,582 Chinese men aged 40-75. BMI ( kg/m(2)) was used to measure overweight ( 23 <= BMI < 27.4) and obesity ( BMI >= 27.5) based on the World Health Organization ( WHO) recommended criteria for Asians. Waist-to-hip ratio ( WHR) was used to measure moderate ( 75th <= WHR < 90th percentile) and severe ( WHR >= 90th percentile) centralized obesity. Results: The average MI and WHR were 23.7 kg/m(2) and 0.90, respectively. The prevalence of overweight was 48.6% and obesity was 10.5%. The prevalence of general and centralized obesity was higher in men with high income or who were retired, tea drinkers, or nonusers of ginseng than their counterparts. Men with high education had a higher prevalence of overweight and centralized obesity, but had a lower prevalence of obesity and severe centralized obesity compared to those with less education. Current smokers or alcohol drinkers had a lower prevalence of general obesity but higher prevalence of centralized obesity than nonsmokers or nondrinkers of alcohol. Ex-smokers and ex-alcohol drinkers had a higher prevalence of general and centralized obesity compared to nonsmokers and nondrinkers of alcohol. Prevalence of obesity was associated with high energy intake and less daily physical activity. Discussion: The prevalence of obesity among Chinese men in urban Shanghai was lower than that observed in Western countries but higher than that in other Asian countries, and the prevalence of general and centralized obesity differed by demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors.

Tingting Li, Zhengrong Tong, Weihua Zhang, Ye Liu, Mingxu Wang

Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid technique using low complexity selective mapping and improved mu law companding scheme to reduce the PAPR and complexity in coherent optical OFDM systems. Simulation results demonstrate significant PAPR reduction and complexity optimization with the proposed scheme. Overall, the LCSLM-mu scheme provides better PAPR reduction performance and reduced complexity compared to traditional approaches, making it a viable option for trade-offs among PAPR reduction, BER, and complexity.

Junjie Huang, Sze Chai Chan, Chun Ho Ngai, Veeleah Lok, Lin Zhang, Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno, Wanghong Xu, Zhi-Jie Zheng, Edmar Elcarte, Mellissa Withers, Martin C. S. Wong

Summary: The incidence and mortality rates of childhood cancer vary between different countries. This study used data from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Time Trends, Nordic Cancer Registries, Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results, and WHO Mortality databases to extract the Age-Standardised Rates (ASR) of cancer incidence and mortality among children aged 0-14 years old. The country-specific Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to determine the epidemiological cancer trend. The results showed that low-income countries had the highest mortality and mortality to incidence ratio of childhood cancer. The incidence of childhood cancer showed an overall increasing trend, while the mortality rate decreased over the past decade.

Updated epidemiology of gastrointestinal cancers in East Asia

Junjie Huang, Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, Lin Zhang, Wanghong Xu, Sunny H. H. Wong, Siew C. C. Ng, Martin C. S. Wong

Summary: Globally, gastrointestinal cancers account for over one-fourth of all cancer incidence and one-third of cancer-related mortality. East Asia has the highest burden of gastrointestinal cancers, including stomach, liver, oesophageal, and gallbladder cancers, which is attributed to population growth, aging, and westernization of lifestyles. The increasing incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer is also observed in East Asia. To effectively reduce the burden of gastrointestinal cancers in this region, efforts should be made to modify unhealthy lifestyles, promote vaccination against hepatitis virus, control infections, increase colorectal cancer screening, enhance early cancer detection, and improve cancer survivorship through organized rehabilitation programs.
