Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a common and quite costly medical problem, primarily affecting the female population which may be due to a shorter urethra. The bacterium Escherichia coli are mainly responsible for most uncomplicated UTIs. Cranberry antibacterial effects have widely been studied in vitro, and laboratory and clinical studies have also been performed to elucidate the mechanisms of cranberry actions and the clinical benefits of cranberry consumption against UTIs. The present review aimed to summarize the proposed mechanisms of cranberry actions against UTIs and the clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of supplementing cranberry products in different subpopulations. Taking into consideration the existing data, cranberry consumption may prevent bacterial adherence to uroepithelial cells which reduces the development of UTI. Cranberry consumption could also decreasing UTI related symptoms by suppressing inflammatory cascades as an immunologic response to bacteria invasion. The existing clinical trials suggest that the beneficial effects of cranberry against UTIs seem to be prophylactic by preventing the development of infections; however, they exert low effectiveness in populations at increased risk for contracting UTIs. Additional well-designed, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials that use standardized cranberry products are strongly justified in order to determine the efficiency of cranberry on the prevention of UTIs in susceptible populations. Natural Functional Foods as a Part of the Mediterranean Lifestyle and Their Association with Psychological Resilience and Other Health-Related Parameters

Efstratios Christodoulou, Georgia-Eirini Deligiannidou, Christos Kontogiorgis, Constantinos Giaginis, Antonios E. Koutelidakis

Summary: This study explored the relationship between Natural Functional Foods (NFFs) and the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and Mediterranean Lifestyle (MEDILIFE) in Greece, as well as their association with Psychological Resilience (PsyR) and other health-related parameters. The results showed a significant association between NFFs grown and produced in the Mediterranean region and the MD and MEDILIFE. These NFFs also had a positive effect on PsyR, sleep quality, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to assess malnutrition and sarcopenia in patients with Crohn's disease. Based on the studied anthropometric, nutritional, and functional variables, sarcopenia was not diagnosed in the CD patients in this study. However, body composition patterns were related to the inflammatory burden, highlighting the interplay between inflammation and malnutrition, even in remission states. Further studies on older populations and during disease exacerbation are necessary to explore the potential link between CD, inflammation, and sarcopenia.

Association of Maternal Pre-Pregnancy Overweight and Obesity with Childhood Anthropometric Factors and Perinatal and Postnatal Outcomes: A Cross-Sectional Study

Eleni Pavlidou, Dimitrios Papandreou, Zainab Taha, Maria Mantzorou, Stefanos Tyrovolas, Dimitrios N. Kiortsis, Evmorfia Psara, Sousana K. Papadopoulou, Marios Yfantis, Maria Spanoudaki, Georgios Antasouras, Maria Mentzelou, Constantinos Giaginis

Summary: This study found that pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity is becoming more common in reproductive-aged women in middle- and high-income populations. Maternal excess body mass index (BMI) before gestation is associated with children's anthropometric characteristics and perinatal and postnatal outcomes. Encouraging healthy lifestyle promotion and focusing on obesity population policies and nutritional interventions among women of reproductive age is necessary.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on binge eating disorder, including new onset and clinical changes. Twelve studies with 4326 participants were included, and the findings suggest an increase in BED diagnoses and worsening of symptoms during the pandemic. However, the quality of the included studies was weak to moderate, and there was high heterogeneity among the studies, indicating a need for further research to validate these findings and develop preventive strategies and personalized treatments.

The Global Growth of 'Sustainable Diet' during Recent Decades, a Bibliometric Analysis

Maria Gialeli, Andreas Y. Troumbis, Constantinos Giaginis, Sousana K. Papadopoulou, Ioannis Antoniadis, Georgios K. Vasios

Summary: The concept of sustainable diets (SDs) refers to diets that promote environmental health, ensure food and nutrition security, and support a healthy lifestyle in humans. International events have played a significant role in promoting the importance of SDs and increasing knowledge and awareness among scientists and policymakers. This study is the first to analyze the trends and turning points in SDs research using bibliometric analysis, revealing the exponential growth in literature on SDs since 2009, with a focus on climate change, food systems, and health. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) emerged as the most popular dietary pattern among local SDs, with collaborations and partnerships between countries contributing to research advancements. Overall, this study maps the expansion of knowledge on SDs over the past 36 years and highlights the impact of international events on scientific research.

Mild to more severe anxiety was related to mental health conditions and cancer stage. 36.2% of participants were considered to have depression, which was related to older age, previous mental health conditions, concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on cancer treatment, and perception of the pandemic affecting mental health. Most participants had a good well-being score.
