Summary: The recent spread of African swine fever (ASF) in Eastern Europe and Asia has been strongly associated with free-ranging pig populations and low-biosecurity backyard pig farming. Managing the disease in wild boar populations and in circumstances where the disease in domestic pigs is largely driven by poverty is particularly challenging. Strict biosecurity remains the only option to prevent ASF outbreaks.

Summary: According to IARC, the global burden of cancer is expected to reach 27.5 million new cases by 2040. The use of nanomaterials in cancer therapy has shown promising results, including improved surgical resection of tumors, targeted and selective chemotherapy, and enhanced efficacy of radiotherapy, leading to decreased risk and increased survival for cancer patients. This review aims to compile the various types of nanoparticles used in different cancer therapies to provide researchers with knowledge on their mechanisms of action and potential for improving cancer treatment.

Summary: This study reviewed the scientific literature of 24 different complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) therapies used in cats, dogs, and horses, and found that there is insufficient scientific documentation to draw clear conclusions about their clinical effect. The research assessed 42 eligible publications representing nine different CAVM therapies, with varying levels of bias and reported treatment effects. Further research is needed to better understand the efficacy of these CAVM therapies.

Summary: This study identified various complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for the treatment of alopecia areata (AA), including essential oil aromatherapy, topical garlic, and oral glucosides of peony with compound glycyrrhizin. Hypnosis and mindfulness psychotherapy showed low-quality evidence for improvement of psychologic and quality of life outcomes. Adverse events were rare and mild for all therapies evaluated.

Summary: Light therapy, or photobiomodulation, is a method of using different types of light to stimulate tissue healing. It is commonly used in animals for musculoskeletal injuries, neurological diseases, wounds, and pain. However, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment protocols or clinical efficacy of light therapy.

Summary: The development of artificial intelligence in complementary and alternative medicine has been rapidly advancing. This systematic scoping review identified three main categories of AI usage in CAM, including acupuncture treatment, tongue and lip diagnoses, and herbal medicine. Future research should focus on verifying and validating these AI models through large-scale clinical trials.

Summary: Leishmaniases are neglected but dangerous parasitic diseases worldwide, with Indian subcontinent and Eastern Mediterranean region being the hotspots. Conventional drugs for leishmaniases are toxic and expensive, leading to drug resistance. Recent research focuses on finding new drugs through drug design and targeting cellular pathways, with potential for combinatorial therapy.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the use patterns of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and its impact on medication adherence among stroke patients. The analysis of 22 studies revealed a prevalence rate of CAM usage at approximately 38% and medication non-adherence rate at 29% among stroke patients. Lack of knowledge and the complexity of medication regimen were primary reasons for increased reliance on CAM and poor medication adherence.

Summary: Elemene injection (EI) has shown potential as a complementary and alternative treatment for cancer, with the ability to enhance efficacy and reduce adverse reactions. However, the methodological quality of studies is poor and the evidence certainty is low, calling for more convincing trials to validate its benefits.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of literature on electrotherapy in horses, dogs, and cats. The findings indicate that there is insufficient scientific evidence to support the clinical effects of electrotherapies in the treatment of conditions affecting muscles, joints, nerves, or bones in these animals. However, limited promising results suggest that further high-quality research is warranted for certain electrotherapy modalities.

Summary: The core idea of precision medicine is to use biomarkers to identify subpopulations with different disease risks, drug responsiveness, and treatment outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in precision medicine by analyzing multidimensional clinical and biological data, aiding in precise diagnoses, accelerating drug discovery, and optimizing treatment outcomes.

Summary: This systematic review explores the neuroregenerative potential of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) in peripheral nerve injury, focusing on the effects of plants or herbs, mushrooms, decoctions, and their natural products. Studies indicate that certain CAMs can enhance Schwann cell proliferation and migration, as well as promote peripheral nerve regeneration and functional recovery in animal models through modulation of neurotrophic factors and signaling pathways.

Summary: This scoping review examines the integration of social determinants of health (SDOH) into medical school curricula. The study finds significant heterogeneity in the content, structure, and duration of SDOH curricula. Longer programs appear to be more effective, and students prefer interactive, experiential-learning teaching methods over traditional classroom-based methods.

Summary: Insomnia is a common disorder, and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended as the first-line treatment. However, CBT-I is not widely available, and long-term medication use is not recommended. To address this gap, alternative treatments have been explored, but the existing research on their effectiveness is limited. This study systematically summarized 15 eligible studies on alternative treatments for insomnia, including acupuncture, melatonin, mind-body interventions, exercise, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), valerian, and light exposure. The results suggest that alternative treatments have subjective improvements on sleep quality, but the evidence on objectively assessed outcomes is inconclusive. High-quality original studies are needed to further investigate the efficacy of alternative treatments.
