We assessed weight change from diagnosis to approximately 18 mo after cancer diagnosis and evaluated its correlates in a large, population-based, cohort study of women diagnosed with stage 0-IV breast cancer. A total of 4,561 cases with weight information 1 yr prior to diagnosis, at diagnosis, and at the 18-mo postdiagnosis interview were included in the study. Multinomial logistic regression models were conducted to examine the association of weight change from diagnosis to 18 mo after diagnosis with sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors. The mean weight change from diagnosis to 18 mo after diagnosis was a gain of 1.7 kg (median: 2.0). Overall, 61% of women gained weight, 27% gained 2-5 kg, and 24% gained epsilon 5 kg, while approximately 14% lost 2 kg during the 18-mo postdiagnosis period. Greater weight gain was significantly related to younger age, premenopausal status, mixed receptor status, more advanced disease stage, prediagnosis weight loss, higher dietary intake, and cigarette smoking. Women with obesity and serious comorbidity were more likely to lose weight. Moderate exercise was not significantly related to weight change. Weight gain is common among breast cancer survivors. Sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors are related to weight change. Appropriate intervention strategies should be developed.

Wenjie Wang, Zeping Wu, Donghui Wang, Pengyu Wang, Weihua Zhang, Patrick N. Okolo, Gareth J. Bennett

Summary: The article introduces an adaptive parallel infill strategy to balance exploration and exploitation in the optimization process of SBO. It uses an inaccurate search strategy to optimize surrogate models and incorporates an elite archive and customized batch size determination strategy. The proposed SBO method shows excellent performance and better stability in various analytical cases and a tower truss system optimization.

Coupled Tamm plasmon polaritons induced narrow bandpass filter with ultra-wide stopband

Qingquan Liu, Xinchao Zhao, Chenlu Li, Xinglei Zhou, Yu Chen, Shaowei Wang, Wei Lu

Summary: In this article, a coupled Tamm plasmon polaritons induced transmission theory was proposed to design high-efficiency narrow bandpass filters (NBPFs) with ultra-wide deep stopbands. An experiment with an NBPF at 1.55 mu m demonstrated a wider stopband and stronger restraint ability compared to traditional filters. This provides a powerful method for capturing specific narrowband optical signals from ultra-wide strong ambient light, particularly useful for daytime quantum communications.

Topical instillation of cell-penetrating peptide-conjugated melphalan blocks metastases of retinoblastoma

Kuan Jiang, Xingyan Fan, Yang Hu, Shengyu Yao, Yu Liu, Changyou Zhan, Weiyue Lu, Gang Wei

Summary: This study achieved effective tumor inhibition and prevention of metastases through topical instillation by conjugating a cell-penetrating peptide, 89WP, with melphalan. The conjugated melphalan and other small molecules were absorbed by the eye via a non-corneal pathway, resulting in a prolonged residence duration in the retina.

H3PO4 activation mediated the iron phase transformation and enhanced the removal of bisphenol A on iron carbide-loaded activated biochar

Nan Zhao, Kunyuan Liu, Chao He, Dongye Zhao, Ling Zhu, Chuanfang Zhao, Weihua Zhang, Wen-Da Oh, Weixian Zhang, Rongliang Qiu

Summary: This study synthesized iron carbide-loaded activated biochar with a high surface area, which exhibited higher removal rate and capacity for bisphenol A (BPA) compared to traditional zero valent iron-loaded biochar. The adsorption and degradation mechanisms were explored, showing that hydrogen bonds were formed between the COOH groups and BPA and that 1O2 was the major reactive species in the degradation process. Density functional reactivity theory also revealed the preference of ROS attacking degradation pathway 2 of BPA. Therefore, this iron carbide-loaded biochar can be a cost-effective and efficient alternative for contaminant removal.

Friction and wear behaviors of HXLPE, PEEK and CoCrMo against articular cartilage under cross-shear motion

Weiping Lu, Wen Cui, Xiaogang Zhang, Yali Zhang, Shu Yang, Jian Pu, Junyan Li, Zhongmin Jin

Summary: The friction and wear behaviors between cartilage replacement materials and articular cartilage are crucial for the function and performance of the replacements. This study investigated the difference between cross-shear motion and reciprocal linear motion on the frictional and wear behaviors of cartilage, as well as the effect of bearing surface roughness. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two motion types. The water contact angle of the bearing surface affected the friction and wear behaviors for low roughness implants, while the surface roughness of the material affected the behaviors for high roughness implants. PEEK was found to be a suitable material for osteochondral implants.

Quantitative analysis on the redox conversion mechanism of Cr(VI) and As (III) by iron carbide based biochar composites

Nan Zhao, Xiaofei Tan, Juan Xiong, Nan Chen, Jia Gao, Rui Wang, Xixiang Yang, Weihua Zhang, Weixian Zhang, Rongliang Qiu

Summary: Fe-based materials have been widely used for the removal of Cr(VI) and As(III) in wastewater, but the quantitative understanding of their removal mechanism and the functions of Fe is still lacking. This study prepared three types of iron carbide based biochar composites with different Fe dosages and found that the Fe dosage has a positive effect on the removal of Cr(VI) and As(III). X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis and pickling experiment revealed the important role of Fe in the removal process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided insights into the adsorption mechanism, while quenching experiment, electron spin resonance analysis, and XPS analysis contributed to the understanding of the reduction and oxidation process. These quantitative mechanisms improve our understanding of the removal of Cr(VI) and As(III) and can guide the preparation and application of Fe/C composites for the removal of redox-active contaminants.

Study of long-time levitation performance of high temperature superconducting maglev under vertical vibration

Wuyang Lei, Jun Zheng, Zhichuan Huang, Weihua Zhang, Zigang Deng

Summary: This paper conducted a long-time dynamic experiment using a self-developed HTS dynamic maglev measurement device to explore the long-time evolution of the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev levitation force (LF). Based on the simulation model, it was found that there is no direct relationship between LF and frequency in the self-oscillation frequency range of HTS maglev. The LF decay was found to follow a logarithmic decay regularity with time. The preload method was carried out to investigate the influencing factors and improve the LF decay.

Summary: Infrared photodetectors, with the ability to detect longer wavelengths, have wide applications in military and daily life. However, the limitations of material growth and device manufacturing hinder the further improvement of infrared detectors. Artificial microstructures, especially metasurfaces, offer potential solutions with their strong light field enhancement and multifunctional properties. This paper reviews conventional and emerging two-dimensional material-based infrared photodetectors, and discusses the progress of integrating metasurfaces to improve device performance.
