We theoretically investigate the localization of an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with repulsive atom-atom interactions in a disordered potential. We focus on the regime where the initial inter-atomic interactions dominate over the kinetic energy and the disorder. At equilibrium in a trapping potential and for the considered small disorder, the condensate shows a Thomas-Fermi shape modified by the disorder. When the condensate is released from the trap, a strong suppression of the expansion is obtained in contrast to the situation in a periodic potential with similar characteristics. This effect crucially depends on both the momentum distribution of the expanding BEC and the strength of the disorder. For strong disorder as in the experiments reported by Clement et al 2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 170409 and Fort et al 2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 170410, the suppression of the expansion results from the fragmentation of the core of the condensate and from classical reflections from large modulations of the disordered potential in the tails of the condensate. We identify the corresponding disorder-induced trapping scenario for which large atom-atom interactions and strong reflections from single modulations of the disordered potential play central roles. For weak disorder, the suppression of the expansion signals the onset of Anderson localization, which is due to multiple scattering from the modulations of the disordered potential. We compute analytically the localized density profile of the condensate and show that the localization crucially depends on the correlation function of the disorder. In particular, for speckle potentials the long-range correlations induce an effective mobility edge in 1D finite systems. Numerical calculations performed in the mean-field approximation support our analysis for both strong and weak disorder.

Fast Control of Atom-Light Interaction in a Narrow Linewidth Cavity

Summary: We propose a method that utilizes high-finesse optical resonators for light-assisted coherent manipulation of atomic ensembles, overcoming the limit imposed by the finite response time of the cavity. The key element is to rapidly switch the interaction between atoms and the cavity field with an auxiliary control process, such as the light shift induced by an optical beam. This method is applicable to various atomic species in different configurations, and can be used to control both internal and/or external atomic degrees of freedom, opening up new possibilities in cavity-aided atom interferometry and the preparation of highly nonclassical atomic states.

Summary: The study introduces an electro-optic modulation technique that allows a single laser diode to serve as a cold-atom source and a quantum inertial sensor based on matter-wave interferometry. By using dual-single-sideband modulation, the optical sidebands can be controlled independently in frequency, phase, and power. The new technique significantly reduces systematic shifts and improves the precision of gravity measurements.

Anomalous mobility edges in one-dimensional quasiperiodic models

Tong Liu, Xu Xia, Stefano Longhi, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia

Summary: This study reveals a new class of mobility edges, called anomalous mobility edges, which separate localized states from critical states in diagonal and off-diagonal quasiperiodic models. The existence of anomalous mobility edges is analytically demonstrated in a solvable diagonal model, and numerical evidence is shown in an off-diagonal model. The results shed light on the localization and critical properties of low-dimensional systems with aperiodic order.

Observation of 1/k4-Tails after Expansion of Bose-Einstein Condensates with Impurities

Hugo Cayla, Pietro Massignan, Thierry Giamarchi, Alain Aspect, Christoph I. Westbrook, David Clement

Summary: We measured the momentum density in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dilute spin impurities and observed algebraic tails decaying as 1/k4 at large momentum k, which originated from impurity-BEC interactions. The amplitudes of these tails exceeded those expected from two-body contact interactions at equilibrium in the trap. These unexpected algebraic tails were found to originate from the nontrivial dynamics of the expansion in the presence of impurity-bath interactions.

Full counting statistics of interacting lattice gases after an expansion: The role of condensate depletion in many-body coherence

Gaetan Herce, Jan-Philipp Bureik, Antoine Tenart, Alain Aspect, Alexandre Dareau, David Clement

Summary: We study the full counting statistics (FCS) of quantum gases in samples of thousands of interacting bosons, detected atom by atom after a long free-fall expansion. In this far-field configuration, the FCS reveals the many-body coherence from which we characterize iconic states of interacting lattice bosons by deducing their normalized correlations g((n))(0) up to the order n = 6. We observe a thermal FCS characterized by perfectly contrasted correlations g((n))(0) = n! in Mott insulators, and small deviations to the Poisson FCS and to the ideal values g((n))(0) = 1 in interacting Bose superfluids.

Summary: Entanglement is a central feature in many-body quantum systems, especially in quantum phase transitions. In this study, we investigate the entanglement spectrum of the long-range XXZ model and find remarkable self-similarity within the critical phase. Our results confirm the predictions of renormalization group theory and provide insights into the quantum phase diagram of the model.

Quantitative absorption imaging: The role of incoherent multiple scattering in the saturating regime

Romain Veyron, Vincent Mancois, Jean-Baptiste Gerent, Guillaume Baclet, Philippe Bouyer, Simon Bernon

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the modification of coherent scattering processes in dense ensembles. The reduction of absorption cross section in dense Rb-87 cold atom ensembles is experimentally demonstrated and found to be linearly related to the optical density. A one-dimensional model of coherent field propagation in an ensemble of quantum two-level systems, which incorporates multiple scattering contribution, is proposed to explain this reduction. The role of incoherent scattering on the modification of the optical response of dense ensembles is highlighted, and a generalization of the Beer-Lambert law is presented. This result allows for quantitative and absolute in situ absorption imaging for any effective two-level system ensemble.

Effective two-level approximation of a multilevel system driven by coherent and incoherent fields

Summary: Numerical simulation of multiple scattering is commonly used to predict the optical response of dense ensembles, but current simulations are limited by computational complexity and ignore the internal structure of atoms. This study proposes a method to overcome these limitations by using an effective two-level system that accurately reproduces scattering properties in any saturation regime, and validates the model under various experimentally realistic conditions.

Quench spectroscopy of a disordered quantum system

L. Villa, S. J. Thomson, L. Sanchez-Palencia

Summary: Characterizing excitations in disordered quantum systems is crucial for understanding glass physics and many-body localization. By using quench spectroscopy, researchers can fully characterize the spectral properties of disordered phases and accurately identify transitions between different phases in systems such as the Bose-Hubbard model. Spatially resolved spectroscopy provides local spectral properties and offers a versatile probe for studying the low-energy phases of disordered systems.
