Wavelength censoring for spectroscopy in optical functional neuroimaging

Brian R. White, Jonah A. Padawer-Curry, Tiffany Ko, Wesley Baker, Jake Breimann, Akiva S. Cohen, Daniel J. Licht, Arjun G. Yodh

Summary: Optical neuromonitoring provides insights into neurovascular physiology and brain structure and function by relating light absorption changes to chromophore concentrations. In this study, new methods were developed to perform spectroscopy even with wavelength-dependent spatial variation in data quality. Results showed that accurate calculation of hemoglobin concentrations and functional connectivity network maps was possible even with censoring of some wavelengths, particularly when using changes in total hemoglobin. This rigorous image processing method has the potential to improve the fidelity of functional neuroimaging studies.

Endovascular and thrombolytic treatment eligibility in childhood arterial ischemic stroke

Melissa L. Hutchinson, Lauren A. Beslow, Evelyn K. Shih, Daniel J. Licht, Alexandra C. Kimmel, Caroline Granath, Rebecca N. Ichord

Summary: This study aimed to describe factors affecting eligibility for and rates of utilization of hyperacute therapy in children with acute ischemic stroke following establishment of an institutional acute stroke treatment pathway in 2005. The results showed that various factors, including delay to presentation, mild neurologic deficits, medical contraindications to IV-tPA, and lack of vessel occlusion on acute neuroimaging, contributed to the low rates of hyperacute treatment in children with acute AIS.

A Novel Embedded Feature Selection and Dimensionality Reduction Method for an SVM Type Classifier to Predict Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) in Neonates

Dieter Bender, Daniel J. Licht, C. Nataraj

Summary: This paper focuses on predicting periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in neonates after heart surgery using Support Vector Machine (SVM). By incorporating an additional optimization step and utilizing an interactive machine learning (iML) algorithm, the SVM model's predictive accuracy was significantly improved while reducing dimensionality.

Yodh, Juliana Gebb, Arastoo Vossough, Grace H. Choi, Mary E. Putt

Summary: Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk for white matter injury (WMI) before neonatal heart surgery. Better knowledge of the causes of preoperative WMI may provide insights into interventions that improve neurodevelopmental outcomes in these patients.
