Summary: This study aimed to establish the importance of risk factors in the development of MRONJ in cancer patients receiving zoledronic acid therapy. The analysis of 174 cancer patients revealed that treatment duration, chemotherapy, and hypertension were risk factors, while endocrine therapy and obesity were protective factors for MRONJ.

Are Bacteria Just Bystanders in the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Jaw Conditions?

Summary: This study aims to compare the types of bacteria isolated in osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis, and MRONJ cases. The results show that non-resident bacteria are more frequently isolated in osteomyelitis patients, while opportunistic organisms are more commonly found in patients diagnosed with osteoradionecrosis. There is no difference in the frequency of resident bacteria between different disease types.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw without osteolysis on computed tomography: a retrospective and observational study

Interactive Associations between PPAR & gamma; and PPARGC1A and Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in Patients with Osteoporosis

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between PPARγ and PPARGC1A polymorphisms and the development of BRONJ in female osteoporosis patients undergoing bisphosphonate treatment. The results showed that PPARGC1A rs2946385 and rs10020457 polymorphisms were significantly associated with BRONJ. Patients with the combined genotypes of GG in both PPARγ rs1151999 and PPARGC1A rs2946385 had a higher risk of BRONJ. Old age (≥70 years) and long duration of bisphosphonate use (≥60 months) also increased the risk of BRONJ.

Actinomyces sp. Presence in the Bone Specimens of Patients with Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: The Histopathological Analysis and Clinical Implication

Summary: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) are two similar bone pathologies in the jaw with different causes. Actinomycosis, a rare oral infection caused by Actinomyces sp., is associated with the development of both MRONJ and ORN, rather than being a superficial contaminant. This study reports the clinical and histopathological aspects of cases treated at our center, highlighting the clinical implications of the presence of this microorganism.

The effect of drug holiday on preventing medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in osteoporotic rat model

Summary: This animal study found that an 8-week drug holiday prior to dental extractions can partially recover osteoclastic activity in osteoporosis rats, but does not alleviate the development of MRONJ-like lesion or exacerbate the osteoporotic condition in the femur. Longer-term drug holiday, or combination of drug holiday and other prophylaxes, could be explored in future studies for prevention of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis.

Targeted histological evaluation shows high incidence of actinomyces infection in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws

Summary: Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) is a difficult-to-treat complication of osteoporosis therapy and some malignancies cured with bisphosphonates and antiresorptive drugs. This study found that using a validated triple staining procedure for Actinomyces bacteria strains can detect a high rate of Actinomyces infection in MRONJ patient samples. The results suggest that the triple special staining should be the standard in MRONJ histology evaluation and can aid clinicians in selecting appropriate antibiotic medication for the elimination of actinomyces infection.

Geranylgeraniol Restores Zoledronic Acid-Induced Efferocytosis Inhibition in Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Summary: This study revealed that long-term use of bisphosphonates such as Zoledronic Acid (ZA) may lead to Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ) by inhibiting macrophage efferocytosis and promoting osteocytic apoptosis. Additionally, supplementing with geranylgeraniol (GGOH) can restore Rac1 homeostasis and rescue macrophage efferocytosis, potentially providing a new treatment approach for BRONJ.

Oral risk factors associated with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients with cancer

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the preventive effect of ozonated oil on the development of MRONJ-like lesions at tooth extraction sites in rats receiving zoledronic acid treatment. While there was no statistically significant difference in the average area of vital and necrotic bone between the groups, ozonated oil appeared to reduce osteonecrosis development. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Measuring Adherence to Antibiotic Use Guidelines in Managing Mandible Fractures

Summary: The purpose of this study was to measure adherence to SIS guidelines among patients treated for isolated mandibular fractures and to identify factors associated with deviation from SIS guidelines. The study found that the adherence rate to SIS antibiotic protocol for isolated mandible fractures was over 90% at the institution. However, factors such as operative treatment, drug use other than marijuana, and transfer from an outside facility were associated with deviation from the SIS antibiotic guidelines.
