Summary: The present study isolated and evaluated several microalgae species from freshwater samples collected from different cities in China. The identified microalgae showed potential for bioethanol, higher alcohols, and biodiesel/oil production, as well as nutrient removal. Among the species, Chlorella vulgaris GEEL-10, Tetradesmus obliquus GEEL-11, and Desmodesmus communis GEEL-12 exhibited the highest growth and nutrient removal capabilities. The high content of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates in these microalgae species makes them suitable for biodiesel production.

Summary: This study investigated the adaptability and biofuel production potential of two strains of microalgae cultivated in livestock wastewater effluent (LWE) with acid mine drainage (AMD). The results showed that one strain of microalgae (Nephroselmis sp. KGE2) exhibited higher growth rate and fatty acid production in the presence of AMD, and the biodiesel produced from this strain had better quality.

Summary: In this study, six microalgal strains were evaluated for their nutrient removal and biodiesel production potential in anaerobically treated swine wastewater. Two selected strains, Chlorella vulgaris FACHB-8 and Chlorella sp. FACHB-31, showed good performance in removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen, as well as producing significant amounts of lipids. The fatty acid profiles of these strains mainly consisted of C-16:0, C-18:1, C-18:0, and C-18:2.

Summary: The study investigated the cultivation of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana EAKI in untreated dairy wastewater as a low-cost nutrient source for biofuel production. Undiluted wastewater was found to result in the highest microalgae biomass production and lipid accumulation, making it a cost-effective option for sustainable biofuel generation. The biodiesel produced from wastewater-grown C. sorokiniana showed promising physico-chemical characteristics, confirming its potential for high-quality biodiesel production.

Summary: Although there is increasing interest in biodiesel production from microalgae, the high cost of multistage production processes is still a barrier to its commercialization. This review thoroughly discusses conventional methods of biodiesel production from microalgae and compares them to state-of-the-art technologies, with particular emphasis on the use of biocatalysts as alternative catalysts. Challenges and innovative solutions in the biocatalytic process are also presented, with a focus on in-situ biodiesel production processes that show promise for industrial application.
