The present study was performed to investigate the possible protective effects of green tea polyphenols against ultraviolet (UV)-C light irradiation-induced cell death in the cultured rat cortical neurons. We found that UV-C light irradiation induced marked cell death tested by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and TdT-mediated biotin-dUTP nicked-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Protective effects of green tea polyphenols on UV-C light irradiation-induced apoptosis in cortical neurons were demonstrated by testing the content of Bax, which is involved in cell death. The expression of active Bax in cultured rat cortical neurons was inhibited significantly by green tea polyphenols compared to UV irradiation group tested by the immunoprecipitation assay and Western blot assay. However, there were no significant changes in the contents of total Bax after treatment with green tea polyphenols in UV-C light-irradiated rat cortical neurons. Our results demonstrated that the green tea polyphenols inhibited the active Bax expression, suggesting a neuroprotective effect of green tea polyphenols against the UV-C light irradiation-induced injury on cortical neurons. Summary: This study demonstrated that magnetic materials can effectively promote neuronal growth under magnetic field loading. Fe3O4@PLGA RBC-like MPs, with a red blood cell-like shape, were constructed and shown to significantly increase cell viability and growth indices in primary cultured cortical neurons when combined with magnetic field loading. Additionally, the protective effect of these magnetic particles and magnetic field loading was demonstrated in mice sciatic nerve injury.

Towards a dynamic behavioral profile of the Mandarin Chinese temperature term re: a diachronic semasiological approach

Meili Liu

Summary: This study investigates the diachronic semasiological variation of the Mandarin Chinese term 'hot' using a corpus-based behavioral profile approach. The findings demonstrate a dynamic behavioral profile with constantly shifting usage patterns and semasiological structural weight of senses. The study extends the traditional behavioral profile approach by applying multiple correspondence analysis, which effectively accounts for and visualizes the multifactorial nature of semasiological change. Additionally, the study complements the basic assumptions of usage-based cognitive semantics by highlighting the role of sociocultural factors in semasiological boundary variation of a lexical item.

Alternation in the Mandarin disposal constructions: quantifying their evolutionary dynamics across twelve centuries

Meili Liu, Hubert Cuyckens

Summary: This study examines the diachronic change in the alternation between the ba and jiang constructions in Chinese. It finds that the usage of the ba-construction has increased over time, while the jiang-construction has decreased. The study also reveals that the preference for the jiang-construction in informal genres has reduced and disappeared in modern times. It further identifies both stable and fluid linguistic constraints that influence the choice between the two constructions.

Neural correlates of social interaction anxiety and their relation to emotional intelligence: A resting-state fMRI study

Song Xue, Feng Kong, Yiying Song, Jia Liu

Summary: This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore the relationship between individual's spontaneous neural activity and social interaction anxiety in a nonclinical population. The results showed that social interaction anxiety was correlated with the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in several brain regions, and that emotional intelligence partially mediated this relationship. This study provides evidence for the neural basis of social interaction anxiety in the normal population and highlights the role of emotional intelligence in this anxiety.

Development of the human medullary arcuate nucleus from mid-gestation to the perinatal period: A morphometric study

Katsuyuki Yamaguchi, Takuya Yazawa

Summary: This study provides morphometric data on the development of the human medullary arcuate nucleus (AN) by examining the brains of preterm and perinatal infants. The results show that AN morphology demonstrates asymmetry and individual variability during the fetal period. The volume and neuronal number of AN increase exponentially with age, while neuronal density decreases exponentially. The AN may undergo neuron death and neuroblasts production after mid-gestation.

Transfer of massive mitochondria from astrocytes reduce propofol neurotoxicity

Zhan Zhou, Weixin Dai, Tianxiao Liu, Min Shi, Yi Wei, Lifei Chen, Yubo Xie

Summary: Studies have shown that propofol-induced neurotoxicity is caused by disruption of mitochondrial fission and fusion, leading to an energy supply imbalance for developing neurons. Healthy mitochondria released by astrocytes can migrate to compromised neurons to mitigate propofol-induced neurotoxicity, but the exact mechanisms involved still need further clarification.

Alamandine injection in the periaqueductal gray and rostral ventromedial medulla attenuates allodynia induced by sciatic nerve ligation in rats

Zahra Gholami, Ava Soltani Hekmat, Ali Abbasi, Kazem Javanmardi

Summary: This study investigated the effects of alamandine on allodynia in a rat model and found the presence of MrgD receptors in the vlPAG and RVM regions. Microinjection of alamandine resulted in a significant increase in paw withdrawal threshold and could be blocked by an MrgD receptor antagonist. Upregulation of MrgD receptor expression following allodynia induction suggests a potential compensatory mechanism in response to pain.

Evaluation of the separate and combined effects of anodal tDCS over the M1 and F3 regions on pain relief in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from neuropathic pain

Ahmad Alipour, Roghayeh Mohammadi

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the separate and combined effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (F3) regions on pain relief in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from neuropathic pain (NP). The results showed that tDCS had the potential to induce pain relief in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from NP. The mean perceived pain intensity in the posttest was lower in the M1 stimulation group than in the F3 stimulation group. However, more trials with larger sample sizes are necessary to define clinically relevant effects.

Summary: This study found a general impairment in humor comprehension in individuals with schizophrenia, with mental jokes being more difficult for both patients and controls. Humor comprehension was closely associated with the patients' overall pragmatic and linguistic profile, while the association with Theory of Mind (ToM) was minimal. Another notable finding was the increased appreciation of humor in individuals with schizophrenia, who rated jokes as funnier than controls did, regardless of whether they were correctly or incorrectly completed. The funniness ratings were not predicted by any measure, suggesting a dimension of humor untied to cognition or psychopathology.
