Background/Aims: The substitution of valine by methionine in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF Val/Met) gene alters the intracellular trafficking and regulated secretion of BDNF. This study tested whether the BDNF Val/Met polymorphism is associated with bipolar disorder in Korean subjects, and whether clinical features vary according to genotype. Methods: The allelic and genotypic distributions of BDNF Val/Met were determined in a population of 169 bipolar patients and 251 normal controls. Between-genotype comparisons of clinical features were performed without a priori knowledge of the genotype of individual patients. Results: Allelic distributions did not differ significantly between bipolar patients and controls (chi(2) = 0.400, p = 0.821). However, the rate of suicide attempts among the Val/Val (11.3%), Val/Met (28.8%) and Met/Met (38.9%) genotype groups were significantly different (chi(2) = 9.879, p = 0.007). Relative to patients with the Val/Val genotype, those with the Met/Met genotype had a 4.9-fold higher risk of suicide attempts (95% CI, 1.7-14.7). Conclusions: These findings suggest that BDNF Val/Met is related to the suicidal behavior of bipolar patients, and may have clinical relevance as a biological indicator of bipolar patients at risk of suicide. Fuzzy sampled-data control of PMSG-based wind turbine systems with random occurring uncertainties

Shanmugam Lakshmanan, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: This article investigates the robust stability of PMSG-based WT systems with ROUs under a fuzzy sampled-data control scheme. The uncertainties in the d-q inductance, system inertia, and stator resistance are considered and modeled as ROUs using white noise sequences. A fuzzy-based sampled-data control is designed to achieve stability against uncertainties and disturbances. Linear matrix inequalities based on looped-Lyapunov functionals are derived to ensure the stability of the T-S fuzzy model for the nonlinear PMSG-based WTs. The derived conditions are validated and compared to show their less conservative nature.

Decentralized observer-based integral sliding mode control design of large-scale interconnected systems and its application to doubly fed induction generator-based wind farm model

Shanmugam Lakshmanan, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: This paper presents a decentralized observer-based control scheme for large-scale interconnected systems using the integral sliding mode control (ISMC) approach. A novel decentralized observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of the interconnected system and the ultimate boundedness of estimation errors are derived using matrix inequality. Numerical simulations validate the theoretical conditions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in an interconnected power system with a DFIG-based wind farm.

Observer-Based Non-PDC Control Design for PMSG-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems

Subramanian Kuppusamy, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: This study proposes a nonparallel distribution compensation (PDC) control method for PMSG-based wind energy conversion systems (WECS). By expressing the nonlinear PMSG-based WECS as a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system, a general non-PDC control strategy is designed via a T-S fuzzy observer. The observer is used to estimate the unmeasurable states of the system, and sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure the stability of the system.

Deep optimization of model predictive control performance for wind turbine yaw system based on intelligent fuzzy deduction

Dongran Song, Ziqun Li, Xiaofei Deng, Mi Dong, Lingxiang Huang, Jian Yang, Mei Su, Younghoon Joo

Summary: Because wind direction is time-varying, yaw is a common state of wind turbines. To improve energy capture and reduce the usage of yaw actuators, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) method based on Fuzzy Deduction Weight Coefficient Evaluator (FDWE) is proposed. The FDWE dynamically adjusts the weight coefficient connecting the objectives of energy capture loss ratio and yaw actuator usage ratio in MPC based on predicted wind direction. Three different strategies are proposed to optimize the fuzzy rule and membership function as part of this complex optimization problem. The results show that the optimized FDWE-MPC using these strategies improves energy capture and reduces yaw actuator usage, indicating promise in reducing production costs for wind turbines.

Stabilization of PMSG-based wind turbine systems with sampling information: Dynamic delay partition method

Subramanian Kuppusamy, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: This paper proposes novel stabilization criteria for a nonlinear permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine system (WTS) with sampled-data information under uncertainty and controller gain variations. The nonlinearity in the PMSG-based WTS is modeled using Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems. A novel looped-type asymmetric augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) is developed by taking advantage of the variable characteristic related to the sampling pattern. The dynamic delay partition method is used for the non-fragile sampled-data control design of the T-S fuzzy systems, and the less conservative stabilization criteria are obtained in the form of linear matrix inequality.

Sathiyamoorthi Arthanari, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: This study presents a memory sampled-data control design for the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-based permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) via an improved looped functional (ILF). The proposed method models the nonlinear PMSG as a T-S fuzzy system and introduces a novel ILF to derive the sufficient criteria. The stabilizsation conditions expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) ensure the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system.

Stabilization Analysis for Nonlinear Systems Under Coupled Fuzzy Controller: A Non-PDC Approach

Gandhi Velmurugan, Young Hoon Joo

Summary: In this study, a coupled fuzzy controller design was proposed for stabilizing a continuous nonlinear system with external perturbations represented by Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems. The controller was developed using non-parallel distributed compensation techniques and a non-quadratic Lyapunov functional was utilized. Stabilization conditions were formulated as linear matrix inequalities using the time derivatives of the non-QLF and Jensen's inequality techniques, ensuring stochastic asymptotic stability of the system with $H_{\infty}$ perturbation damping criterion. Two simulation results were presented to validate the proposed methodologies.
