Summary: This review examines the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in bipolar disorder (BD) and investigates its potential as a biomarker for BD. The results show a decrease in circulating levels of BDNF during acute phases of BD compared to healthy controls, which increase after effective therapy. The Val66Met polymorphism is associated with features typically linked to worse outcomes. While more research is needed, BDNF appears to be a promising biomarker for BD.

Summary: This study compared peripheral BDNF levels between pediatric and adult BD patients and found that BDNF levels were significantly lower in pediatric BD patients than in adult BD patients, which could potentially serve as a marker to distinguish pediatric BD patients from healthy controls. Furthermore, higher BDNF levels in adult BD were associated with later disease onset, but this association was not observed in pediatric BD patients. Additionally, reduced BDNF levels were associated with illness duration in adult BD patients.

Summary: The study found significantly lower BDNF levels in patients with Bipolar Type II disorder (BD II) compared to patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and healthy controls. BD II and MDD patients showed similar cognitive deficits in attention, delayed memory, and RBANS total score. BDNF levels were positively associated with visuospatial/constructional and Stroop color-word in the BD II group, and with language in the MDD group.

Summary: This study found that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is associated with the pathogenesis of emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) and suicidal behavior. Epigenetic alterations of BDNF were observed in severely impaired EUPD and suicidal patients. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying suicide and EUPD and may lead to the development of novel treatment methods.

Summary: This study aimed to compare serum levels of BDNF, proBDNF, and S100B before and after treatment for acute depressive episodes and assess their correlation with symptom severity and stress history. The results showed a significant decrease in proBDNF levels after treatment, while BDNF and S100B levels did not change significantly. Thus, a decrease in serum proBDNF levels may be considered a biomarker of recovery from depressive episodes.

Summary: According to a meta-analysis, peripheral levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) significantly decrease in depression compared to nondepressed healthy controls. However, the study reveals significant heterogeneity among the included studies. Factors such as history of depression and alcohol consumption affect the level of BDNF, while age and gender do not impact the heterogeneity. Although decreased BDNF expression is a risk factor for depression, it cannot be used as a reliable biomarker to assess depression in clinical practice.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the concentration of GDNF in tears and serum of patients with a current depressive episode. The results showed that GDNF concentration in the serum was significantly lower in women with MDD, and in BD patients, there was a significant correlation between GDNF concentration in tears and the use of anxiolytics or antidepressants. A significant correlation between GDNF concentrations in tears and serum was found in the control group. In conclusion, GDNF concentration in tears could be a biomarker of the current depressive episode.

An integral sliding mode controller (ISMC) is presented for the machine-side converter (MSC) to maximize output power, and a grid-side converter (GSC) is also designed to protect the DC-link and maintain steady output power. The exponential reaching law is employed to ensure stable output power during various wind speed conditions.

Summary: This article investigates the robust stability of PMSG-based WT systems with ROUs under a fuzzy sampled-data control scheme. The uncertainties in the d-q inductance, system inertia, and stator resistance are considered and modeled as ROUs using white noise sequences. A fuzzy-based sampled-data control is designed to achieve stability against uncertainties and disturbances. Linear matrix inequalities based on looped-Lyapunov functionals are derived to ensure the stability of the T-S fuzzy model for the nonlinear PMSG-based WTs. The derived conditions are validated and compared to show their less conservative nature.

Summary: This paper presents a decentralized observer-based control scheme for large-scale interconnected systems using the integral sliding mode control (ISMC) approach. A novel decentralized observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of the interconnected system and the ultimate boundedness of estimation errors are derived using matrix inequality. Numerical simulations validate the theoretical conditions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in an interconnected power system with a DFIG-based wind farm.

Summary: This study proposes a nonparallel distribution compensation (PDC) control method for PMSG-based wind energy conversion systems (WECS). By expressing the nonlinear PMSG-based WECS as a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system, a general non-PDC control strategy is designed via a T-S fuzzy observer. The observer is used to estimate the unmeasurable states of the system, and sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure the stability of the system.

Summary: Because wind direction is time-varying, yaw is a common state of wind turbines. To improve energy capture and reduce the usage of yaw actuators, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) method based on Fuzzy Deduction Weight Coefficient Evaluator (FDWE) is proposed. The FDWE dynamically adjusts the weight coefficient connecting the objectives of energy capture loss ratio and yaw actuator usage ratio in MPC based on predicted wind direction. Three different strategies are proposed to optimize the fuzzy rule and membership function as part of this complex optimization problem. The results show that the optimized FDWE-MPC using these strategies improves energy capture and reduces yaw actuator usage, indicating promise in reducing production costs for wind turbines.

Summary: This paper proposes novel stabilization criteria for a nonlinear permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine system (WTS) with sampled-data information under uncertainty and controller gain variations. The nonlinearity in the PMSG-based WTS is modeled using Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems. A novel looped-type asymmetric augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) is developed by taking advantage of the variable characteristic related to the sampling pattern. The dynamic delay partition method is used for the non-fragile sampled-data control design of the T-S fuzzy systems, and the less conservative stabilization criteria are obtained in the form of linear matrix inequality.

Summary: In this study, a coupled fuzzy controller design was proposed for stabilizing a continuous nonlinear system with external perturbations represented by Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems. The controller was developed using non-parallel distributed compensation techniques and a non-quadratic Lyapunov functional was utilized. Stabilization conditions were formulated as linear matrix inequalities using the time derivatives of the non-QLF and Jensen's inequality techniques, ensuring stochastic asymptotic stability of the system with $H_{\infty}$ perturbation damping criterion. Two simulation results were presented to validate the proposed methodologies.
