A Dual-Enzyme Amplification Loop for the Sensitive Biosensing of Endopeptidases

Summary: A rapid and sensitive approach for the detection of endopeptidases, utilizing the AMELIE mechanism, has been developed. The AMELIE mechanism involves the mutual enzymatic activity of immobilized enzymes triggered by the target endopeptidase analyte. The proof of concept demonstrated the detection of collagenase with a detection limit of 2.5 pg/mL and a wide linear range. The AMELIE biosensor has the potential for the sensitive detection of other endopeptidases.

The carbon footprint of general anaesthetics: A case study in the UK

Summary: The UK National Health Service aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with a focus on reducing the carbon footprint of inhalational anaesthetic gases (IAGs). Research suggests that using oxygen/air mix as the carrier gas while applying a vapour capture technology can minimize the carbon footprint of IAGs, making the carbon footprint of sevoflurane similar to that of propofol. This study supports reducing the use of nitrous oxide and adopting vapour capture technologies to further decrease the carbon footprint of IAGs.

Biodeterioration in art: a case study of Munch's paintings

Summary: Biocolonization and biodeterioration in Cultural Heritage, particularly in artworks such as paintings, pose significant challenges for conservation strategies and preservation measures. This study analyzed surface-altered Edvard Munch paintings to identify the materials used and understand the associated colonizing microbiota. The use of immunoenzymatic assays and high throughput sequencing revealed the presence of proteolytic bacteria in these artworks, indicating their biodeteriogenic characteristics. Simulation assays further confirmed the degradative action promoted by these proteolytic strains. This research provides valuable insights for effective intervention processes in preserving Munch's paintings.

A nursing care-sensitive patient satisfaction measure in older patients

Summary: This article proposes the empirical operationalization of patient satisfaction as an indicator sensitive to nursing care based on functional capacity and quality of life assessments. The study involved 351 individuals aged 65 and older in a community setting. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate the proposed model, which showed good reliability and construct validity. Functional capacity and quality of life were found to be significant predictors of patient satisfaction with nursing care.

NE and PR3, but not CatG, hydrolyze the scissile peptide bond adjacent to the polybasic amino acid sequence of S1/S2 interface in SARS-CoV-2, suggesting their involvement in priming the virus during an immune response.

Summary: This study investigated the association between peri-hematomal edema and intracerebral hemorrhage volume with one-year functional outcome and long-term survival in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage patients. The results showed that intracerebral hemorrhage volume and total lesion volume were independently associated with death or dependence one year after intracerebral hemorrhage, while peri-hematomal edema volume was not.

Summary: The treatment with human pituitary-derived growth hormone (hGH) was responsible for a significant proportion of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (iCJD) cases, with France and the UK experiencing the largest numbers. Differences in PRNP codon 129 polymorphisms and estimated incubation periods did not lead to significant differences in the prion strains identified in hGH-iCJD cases from the two countries.

Summary: This study investigated the differential expression of serpin superfamily members in neurodegenerative diseases. The results showed dysregulation of SERPINB1, SERPINB6, SERPING1, SERPINH1, and SERPINI1 in sCJD individuals compared to controls, while only SERPINB1 was upregulated in AD patients. Additionally, SerpinA3n transcript and protein were upregulated in a mouse model of AD. These findings suggest that SERPINA3/SerpinA3n may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of prion and prion-like neurodegenerative diseases.
