Summary: Stroke in young adults is becoming more common in the United States due to the increasing prevalence of traditional risk factors and non-modifiable risk factors. The unique mechanisms causing stroke in this population include cervical dissection, cardioembolic phenomenon, vasculitis and vasculopathy, connective tissue disease, patent foramen ovale, and cerebral venous thrombosis. Diagnosing stroke in young adults can be challenging because of its diverse clinical presentations. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology, explores the mechanisms, and updates the literature on the management and prevention of stroke in young adults.

Summary: The study aims to describe the medication self-management behaviors of adolescents and young adults with cancer and examine the barriers and facilitators to optimal use of medications. The findings suggest that most participants had accurate knowledge and average self-efficacy for managing medications but still required support and reminders.

Summary: The study compared the clinical features and survival rates of osteosarcoma in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with other age groups. It found that AYA had the highest male-to-female ratio, with most tumors located in extremities. The treatment mainly consisted of local treatment and systemic chemotherapy, and the 5-year overall survival rate of AYA was closer to that of children.

Summary: Developmental evidence on emotion knowledge and deafness has mainly been focused on Western populations. This study investigated the associations between deafness, emotion understanding, and affective recognition and labelling in individuals from the Philippines. Results showed that, after controlling for age and verbal ability, deaf and hearing individuals were similar in their total affective recognition and labelling skills, but deaf individuals performed poorer in total emotion understanding compared to hearing controls. Several possible explanations for these findings were discussed.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between household food insecurity (HFI) and fear of hypoglycemia among young adults and adolescents with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as their parents. The results showed that adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes experiencing HFI had higher fear of hypoglycemia scores compared to those without HFI. Screening for HFI and fear of hypoglycemia can help healthcare providers customize diabetes education for individuals who have HFI and fear hypoglycemia.

Summary: The study found an association between adolescent obesity and stroke in young adults, particularly with ischemic stroke, while the correlation with hemorrhagic stroke was weaker. The increasing prevalence of adolescent obesity may contribute to the future burden of stroke in young adults.

Summary: Numerous surgical techniques exist for treating pilonidal disease, but there is no significant difference in recurrence rates among them. Older patients have decreased risk of recurrence, while wound complication rates are lower in patients undergoing secondary healing, possibly due to differences in age and sex. Further research on newer, minimally invasive techniques is needed.

Summary: The incidence and mortality rates of cancers in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Europe and EU member states vary widely, with the highest mortality seen in Eastern EU countries. Breast, thyroid, and testicular cancers are the most common types across countries, followed by melanoma of skin and cervical cancer. Differences in cancer incidence rates may be due to various risk factors, screening implementation or uptake, and overdiagnosis. Disparities in AYA cancer mortality might be attributed to differences in early-stage diagnoses, public education and awareness of cancer symptoms, and access to treatment. It is crucial to establish AYA-specialised services and preventive initiatives to address the future healthcare needs and mitigate the increasing burden.

Summary: Defining immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in two age groups, children and adults, does not consider the specific clinical features and needs of adolescents and young adults (AYAS). This study reveals that refractory ITP is uncommon in AYAS, but AYAS with refractory ITP display a high disease burden at all time points.

Summary: Pediatric brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a leading cause of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (SICH) in children. This study validates the recently created Ruptured Arteriovenous Malformation Grading Scale (RAGS) in a cohort of pediatric patients with AVMs, and demonstrates that the RAGS score outperforms other clinical grading scales in predicting clinical outcomes.

Summary: This Primer provides an overview of the mechanisms, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of stroke in children. Childhood stroke is a significant cause of neurological damage and survivors often carry lifelong neurological deficits. While progress has been made in pediatric stroke research, the evidence for interventions, such as rapid reperfusion therapies, remains limited and delays in diagnosis and treatment continue to pose challenges.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical characteristics, angioarchitecture, and outcomes of pediatric spinal arteriovenous shunts (SAVS) through a large cohort analysis and meta-analysis of individual patient data. The findings showed that SAVS in children are most commonly located in the cervical region, and treatment can lead to symptom improvement.

Summary: This study describes the largest series to date comparing the presentation, angioarchitecture, and management of incidental versus symptomatic unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in children. The results showed that incidental AVMs are more common in pediatric patients and are characterized by smaller size, less deep venous drainage, earlier age of onset, and longer duration to treatment compared to symptomatic AVMs.
