Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant environmental risk factor for neurodegenerative disease, but it is unclear how TBI leads to ongoing chronic neurodegeneration. Animal studies suggest that TBI triggers systemic inflammation, which can result in sustained and aggressive microglial activation and widespread neurodegeneration. This study aims to evaluate systemic inflammation as a mediator of ongoing neurodegeneration after TBI.

Summary: The incidence of Alzheimer's disease is rapidly increasing globally, posing a significant burden to health and economy. Early intervention for neurodegeneration may help prevent cognitive decline, but there is currently a lack of simple, rapid, and accurate diagnosis for early cognitive impairment. Resting-state functional MRI indicators such as ALFF, fALFF, and ReHo have shown promise as potential early diagnostic markers for Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: According to the Global Burden of Disease study, the DALYs of neurological diseases in South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions were 64.4 million and 85.0 million in 2019, respectively. Stroke, migraine, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias had the highest DALYs in these regions in 2019.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on cognitive function in stroke patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) through randomized controlled trials. The findings suggest that early initiation of CPAP treatment may contribute to improvement in global cognition in stroke patients with OSA, but the effect on specific cognitive domains is not significant. CPAP therapy also significantly alleviates subjective sleepiness.

Summary: Epigenetic clocks are valuable biomarkers for aging, especially in understanding brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. This study compared different epigenetic clocks in blood and brain samples, finding that the Cortical clock showed the highest correlation with chronological age in brain specimens. Further research is needed to explore CpG sites that are conserved across blood and brain for better understanding of neurodegeneration.

Summary: Sleep disruption plays an important role in the onset and early signs of Alzheimer's disease. The ALFASleep project aims to characterize sleep in cognitively unimpaired middle-aged/late middle-aged adults at increased risk of AD using subjective and objective measurements, with the goal of understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms linking sleep and AD and developing non-invasive biomarkers and preventive strategies targeting sleep.

Summary: This multisite longitudinal cohort study aims to investigate factors predicting approaching end of life or associated with end-of-life quality in individuals with dementia with Lewy bodies. Data will be analyzed using terminal trend models to identify significant predictors of imminent death and assess caregiver factors post-death. The study results will be disseminated through traditional scientific strategies and partnerships with relevant organizations.

Summary: This study examined the association between migraine and dementia. It found that individuals with a migraine diagnosis had a higher dementia rate, while the use of prescribed migraine medication was not associated with dementia. Among migraine cases, individuals with MA who used migraine medication had the highest dementia rate, while those with MO who also used medication had the lowest rate. The number of migraine medication prescriptions was not linked to dementia.

Summary: The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic with partial resemblance to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV in phylogenetic analysis, clinical manifestations, and pathological findings; ataxia has been described as a neurological symptom of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in reports from China. Opsoclonus-Myoclonus-Ataxia syndrome (OMAS) associated with COVID-19 infection has been recently reported.
