Objective: To assess somatoform disorder (SFMD) prevalence and impact in Parkinson disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Methods: SFMD were assessed by direct observation of symptoms in the year coincident (+/-6 months) with definite diagnosis of PD, DLB, Alzheimer disease, multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, or frontotemporal dementia, and by interviews with patients, caregivers, and general practitioners, and reviews of prior hospital admissions, in a cohort of 942 patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Matched groups of patients with PD and patients with DLB without vs with SFMD were selected for comparisons and followed up over 4 years. Results: The frequency of SFMD was higher in DLB (15 patients, 12%) and PD (29 patients, 7%) than in other neurodegenerative diseases (0%-3%). SFMD consisted of conversion motor or sensory disorders, often accompanied by delusional thought content; in one patient catatonic symptoms were observed concomitantly with PD diagnosis. Evidence of SFMD symptoms, preceding diagnosis by 6 months-10 years, was obtained in 28 patients with PD and all patients with DLB. A total of 22 patients with PD and all patients with DLB could be followed for 4 years. SFMD symptoms recurred during follow-up, with catatonic signs developing in 9 patients with PD and 8 patients with DLB. Most baseline demographic and clinical features did not differ between subjects with or without SFMD. Decline of cognitive function was greater in PD-SFMD patients than in those without SFMD (p < 0.01); it was comparable to that observed in DLB. Conclusions: The frequency of somatoform disorder (SFMD) (with catatonic signs) in Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies suggests that SFMD are part of the spectrum of Lewy body diseases. Summary: This study suggests that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection is very low in minors and after 12 months of follow-up. The findings support the implementation of more targeted restriction policies for individuals who have recovered from a first infection.

Summary: In a study conducted in central Italy, catch-up HPV vaccination was found to significantly reduce the risk of cervical abnormalities detected in organized screening and provide herd protection to unvaccinated women.

Occurrence and congener profiles of dioxins (PCDDs), furans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ovine and caprine milk samples collected in a very polluted site in Central Italy

Summary: Concentrations of 7 PCDDs, 10 PCDFs and 18 PCBs were measured in 16 milk samples from sheep and goats in Bussi sul Tirino, central Italy. The samples complied with the maximum levels set in EU regulations for PCDD/Fs and the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs. However, in two cases, contamination levels of the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs exceeded the action levels recommended by the EU. The contamination profiles of the milk samples were independent of the distance from the illegal landfill but likely influenced by local emission sources.

Bipolar spectrum disorders in neurologic disorders

Summary: Psychiatric symptoms often occur before or with neurological disorders. Symptoms of bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD) can also be seen in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia. Other neurological disorders also share clinical and biological characteristics with BSD, including neuroinflammation, ion channel dysfunctions, neurotransmission imbalance, and neurodegeneration. Although the pathophysiology of BSD is unclear, large-scale network dysfunctions play a role in mood disorders and psychotic symptoms. These functional alterations can manifest years before the development of organic central nervous system diseases.

COVID-19 Vaccination Did Not Increase the Risk of Potentially Related Serious Adverse Events: 18-Month Cohort Study in an Italian Province

Summary: This cohort study examined the incidence of potentially vaccine-related serious adverse events (PVR-SAEs) in the entire population of an Italian Province based on COVID-19 vaccination status. The findings showed that vaccinated individuals did not have an increased risk of death or PVR-SAEs compared to the unvaccinated. These results were consistent across different demographics, vaccine types, and infection statuses. Further research is needed to assess the long-term safety of COVID-19 vaccines.

Summary: HRV analysis is a valuable method for assessing cardiovascular risk and cardioautonomic impairment in SUDEP patients. The reduction of SDNN and RMSSD is common in SUDEP cases, while there are no significant differences in time and frequency domain parameters compared to controls. However, there is a trend towards increased LF/HF ratio in SUDEP patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between early progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) and relapse-associated worsening (RAW) with the onset and disability accumulation of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). It found that early PIRA and RAW were associated with increased risk of SPMS, but not with the rate of disability progression during SPMS.

Summary: This cohort study in Italy found that females, older individuals, and those with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney disease, and cancer were at a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The likelihood of severe or lethal COVID-19 was significantly lower among younger individuals, while comorbidities were independently associated with a higher risk. Vaccination, especially with booster doses, significantly reduced the risk of severe or lethal disease.

Cervical cerclage for prevention of preterm birth and adverse perinatal outcome in twin pregnancies with short cervical length or cervical dilatation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the role of cervical cerclage in preventing preterm birth and adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies. The findings suggest that cervical cerclage in twin pregnancies with short cervical length or cervical dilatation is associated with a reduced risk of preterm birth and improved neonatal outcomes. However, confirmation of these findings in large and well-designed randomized controlled trials is needed for stronger evidence.

Summary: A cohort study was conducted in the province of Pescara, Italy, to assess the real-world effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The study found that individuals who received at least one booster dose had an 85% lower risk of severe or lethal COVID-19. Moreover, during the Omicron predominance period, only the group who received at least a booster dose showed a reduced risk of COVID-19-related death.
