Summary: This study suggests that constipated men and women exhibit different recto-anal pressure patterns, with women being more prone to defecatory disorders and men being more likely to have abnormal balloon expulsion tests. These findings are independent of sex-specific physiological differences.

Summary: The study assessed the anorectal function of patients with mid-low rectal cancer before and 3-6 months after surgery. It found that the high-pressure zone of the anal sphincter was shorter and the resting pressure and squeeze pressure of the anus were lower after surgery. Patients with focal pressure defects in the anal canal and spastic peristaltic contractions from the new rectum to anus had higher LARS scores.

Summary: This study found that there are significant differences in results obtained by different operators during high-resolution anorectal manometry (HRM), despite using similar instructions. These differences may have a significant impact on the diagnoses and therapies offered to constipated patients.

Summary: 3DHRAM is a useful tool for assessing the function of the anorectum in children after surgery for anorectal disorders. The study found that patients with anal atresia had the lowest pressure values, while those with non-retentive fecal incontinence had significantly lower resting pressures compared to asymptomatic children. Additionally, constipated patients had significantly higher urge thresholds compared to asymptomatic patients.

Summary: This study evaluated constipated children with 3DHRAM and determined a new pediatric cut-off for DD variables. The analysis showed that the percent anal relaxation during straining significantly differed between patients and controls, leading to a new cut-off value of 31% for this variable.

Summary: This study analyzed anal sphincter activity in patients with anorectal malformation (ARM) using Three-Dimensional High Resolution Anorectal Manometry (3D-HRAM). The results revealed a correlation between manometric parameters and clinical outcomes, highlighting spinal malformations and ARM type as important prognostic risk factors for a bad outcome. Specific sphincteric defects can be explored with manometry, enabling tailored bowel management strategies.

Summary: Despite surgical correction, long-term bowel dysfunction can occur in children with anorectal malformations, including fecal incontinence and evacuation disorders. Anorectal manometry is commonly used to assess anorectal function in this population, but there is a lack of standardized protocols and interpretation. This systematic review evaluated existing data on anorectal manometry results in children following anorectal malformation repair and highlighted the need for standardized protocols to enhance comparability and clinical relevance.

Summary: This study provides normal data for high-resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM) in a healthy Indian population and evaluates the impact of gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) on anorectal functions. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in anal pressures between males and females, but rectal pressure and anal pressure during simulated evacuation without rectal distention are higher in males. Additionally, females have a lower threshold for the first sensation, and subjects under the age of 40 have higher anal residual pressure. Moreover, individuals with a BMI below 23 kg/m(2) have higher maximum anal squeeze pressure and maximum rectal pressure during push.

Summary: Anorectal manometry is commonly used to assess anorectal function, and this study examined anorectal pressure responses to cough in healthy individuals and those with fecal incontinence. The study found differences in anal function between nulliparous and parous healthy volunteers, as well as patients with fecal incontinence, which were not detected using traditional measures. Cough-anorectal measurements may improve the yield of anorectal manometry.

Summary: Three-dimensional high-resolution anorectal manometry (3DHRAM) is a new technique that can be used to diagnose anorectal disorders and pelvic floor disorders. This study confirmed the reliability of 3DHRAM in the diagnosis of paradoxical puborectalis syndrome (PPS) compared to X-ray defaecography.

Summary: The study evaluates children with non-retentive fecal incontinence (NRFI) using three-dimensional high-resolution anorectal manometry (3D-HRAM). It finds lower pressure parameters in children with NRFI and suggests that 3D-HRAM may reveal segments with decreased pressures in patients with normal resting pressures.

Summary: This study evaluated the function of the reconstructed anal canal in postoperative anorectal malformations (ARMs) patients using three dimension (3D) high-definition anorectal manometry. The majority of ARMs patients had acceptable functional outcomes, and 3D manometry can objectively assess the reconstructed anal canal function, helping clinicians explore causes of defecation complications and guide further management.

Summary: Biofeedback therapy is widely used to treat chronic constipation patients, especially those with dyssynergic defecation. This study demonstrates that integrated pressurized volume parameters are better than conventional parameters in predicting responsiveness to biofeedback therapy, and the combination of these parameters and partial least squares regression is particularly promising. Integrated pressurized volume parameters can more effectively explain the physiology of the anorectal canal compared with conventional parameters.

Summary: GASTROSWOT is a strategic analysis aiming to provide guidance for research, clinical, and financial planning in gastroenterology. The analysis reveals the increasing incidence and complexity of gastrointestinal diseases, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient care, and emphasizes the need for well-trained workforce and strategic planning in the field. The future of gastroenterology will be influenced by artificial intelligence and big data, which will accelerate discovery and smarter health-care provision. However, careful planning is crucial to balance the growth and diversification of gastroenterological specialties and the value of general gastroenterology services.

Summary: Bowel perforation of biliary stents is a rare complication, and we report a successful endoscopic treatment in a 78-year-old man. The patient had a straight biliary plastic stent perforating the ascending colon without any underlying structural abnormality. The perforation was incidentally detected during computed tomography, and the stent extraction and closure of the perforation site were performed using endoscopic snare and through-the-scope clips, respectively. The patient remained asymptomatic. Additionally, we reviewed published cases and found that most perforations are caused by straight plastic stents.
