Androgens are intricately involved in reproductive and aggressive behaviors, but the role of the androgen receptor in mediating these behaviors is less defined. Further, activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis can influence each other at the level of the androgen receptor. Knowledge of the mechanisms for androgens' effects on behaviors through the androgen receptor will guide future studies in elucidating male reproductive and aggressive behavior repertoires. Summary: This study found that unlike male bile duct-ligated (BDL) rats, female and ovariectomized (OVX) BDL rats did not develop hyponatremia, supraoptic vasopressin (AVP) neuron activation, or increased copeptin secretion compared to female controls. Adrenal estradiol may have compensated for the lack of ovarian estrogens in OVX BDL rats.

Is there a Neurobiological Rationale for the Utility of the Iowa Gambling Task in Parkinson's Disease?

Michael F. Salvatore, Isabel Soto, Helene Alphonso, Rebecca Cunningham, Rachael James, Vicki A. Nejtek

Summary: Research suggests that individuals with Parkinson's disease may experience deficits in executive functioning early in the disease process, prior to motor decline. The use of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to evaluate executive functioning in non-strategic decision-making could help identify PD pathology and detect the disease in its premotor stages.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases have severe impacts on cognitive and motor function, with age and longevity being the main risk factors and sex also playing an important role. Sex hormone receptors play a crucial role in cell health, with oxidative stress associated with aging influencing this health status. Understanding these signaling cascades could lead to therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases.

The Role of Estriol and Estrone in Keratoconic Stromal Sex Hormone Receptors

Paulina Escandon, Sarah E. Nicholas, Rebecca L. Cunningham, David A. Murphy, Kamran M. Riaz, Dimitrios Karamichos

Summary: This study aims to determine the role of corneal stroma sex hormone receptors in keratoconus and their interaction with estrone and estriol. The findings suggest that the human cornea is a hormone-responsive tissue significantly influenced by estrone and estriol, indicating their potential involvement in the pathobiology of keratoconus.

Anterior pituitary, sex hormones, and keratoconus: Beyond traditional targets

Summary: Keratoconus, a progressive and multifactorial corneal disorder, has a devastating impact on vision and the socioeconomic status of patients. Corneal transplant remains the primary surgical intervention for treatment, despite advances in medical therapy and visual rehabilitation. The role of hormones, especially gonadotropins, in keratoconus is still unclear, but hormonal imbalances have been linked to the disease. The existence of a new axis called the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal-Corneal (HPAC) axis is proposed to further understand the pathobiology of keratoconus.

Selective Modulation of the Keratoconic Stromal Microenvironment by FSH and LH

Paulina Escandon, Sarah E. Nicholas, Brenda Vasini, Rebecca L. Cunningham, David A. Murphy, Kamran M. Riaz, Dimitrios Karamichos

Summary: Keratoconus (KC) is a corneal disease characterized by thinning and bulging of the corneal structure. The cause of KC is multifactorial and not well understood. This study investigated the role of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in KC using an in vitro model. The results showed that LH stimulation significantly increased cell proliferation in human KC cells and led to changes in sex hormone receptors, fibrotic markers, and gonadotropin signaling pathway proteins. These findings highlight the importance of further studying the role of FSH/LH in KC and corneal homeostasis.

Summary: This study shows that interfering with the localization of the membrane androgen receptor (mAR) to cholesterol-rich lipid rafts can reduce androgen-induced neurotoxicity under oxidative stress environments.
