Summary: The incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is higher in Israel than the European average. Socio-economic factors and ethnicity, particularly Arab ethnicity, are associated with an increased risk of ESRD, especially due to diabetes. Allocation of health resources and culturally appropriate interventions are necessary to improve control of modifiable risk factors for chronic renal failure.

Summary: An oral sorbent that can remove NH4+ within the small intestine of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients has been investigated. The study found that a gas-permeable, hydrophobic coating called perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FOTS) attached to a tetraethyl orthosilicate-coated ZrP surface showed promising results in terms of NH4+ removal and selectivity. The FOTS coating exhibited hydrophobic properties and increased NH4+ removal by 53% compared to uncoated ZrP. The FOTS-coated ZrP also maintained its NH4+ removal capacity and selectivity after exposure to low-pH conditions, making it a potential oral sorbent for ESKD patients.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a severe public health problem that can lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis or transplantation. This study identified altered metabolites and biochemical reactions between ESRD and CKD, offering potential new biomarkers for monitoring CKD progression. Inhibition of the kynurenine pathway may be a promising target for delaying CKD progression, and metabolites with high discriminative ability could complement current markers to better indicate kidney damage status.

Summary: Experienced End-Stage Renal Disease Seamless Care Organizations (ESCOs) performed better under the Comprehensive End-Stage Renal Disease Care (CEC) Initiative, while ESCOs located in more affluent areas and smaller ESCOs also showed better performance. The number of dialysis facilities and years of experience in the CEC Initiative were also associated with ESCOs' performance.

Summary: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment options include kidney transplantation, dialysis, and palliative care. Prior to dialysis, optimal disease management is essential and initiation should be decided through shared decision-making. Vaccination, blood pressure control, salt restriction, and adequate dialysis are recommended for ESRD patients to optimize treatment outcomes.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) patients are prone to develop cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation, with electrolyte and acid-base disturbances being the main pathogenic mechanisms. Cardiac arrhythmias, in turn, increase the risk of poor renal outcomes. Modifying dialysis/replacement fluid composition can reduce the risk of arrhythmias in AKI patients receiving kidney replacement treatment.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death globally by 2040. The number of individuals requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) due to kidney failure is also increasing dramatically. However, current RRT methods, such as hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, are suboptimal. This review highlights emerging knowledge and technologies that could revolutionize kidney care by enabling earlier diagnosis of CKD and improving renal replacement therapies through advancements like wearable artificial kidneys and stem cell-derived therapies.

Summary: Due to the vulnerability of chronic kidney disease patients to infectious diseases, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the nephrology community. Lessons from the European Renal Association COVID-19 Database project provide recommendations for improving preparedness for future health crises. Challenges faced include limited collaboration, lack of common data architecture, and sub-optimal data quality. Aligning research initiatives, strengthening electronic health records, and involving experts in study design and data analysis will be crucial in responding to the next pandemic.

Summary: This study analyzed the infection prevention and control strategies implemented by dialysis centers in Europe during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that most centers implemented measures such as fever screening, hand disinfection, and mask-wearing to prevent the spread of the virus. There were variations between centers and national guidelines in terms of recommended distances between dialysis chairs and isolation practices.

Summary: The definition of the elderly as individuals aged 65 years or older fails to consider the genetic, lifestyle, and overall health differences that contribute to significant heterogeneity among older adults. With the global aging population, the prevalence of chronic diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), is increasing. Frailty is highly prevalent in this population and needs to be assessed to inform medical decisions. Choosing the optimal treatment pathway for elderly and frail patients with kidney failure is complex due to the presence of comorbidities associated with low survival rates and impaired quality of life. Multidisciplinary management involving healthcare professionals from various specialties is recommended. Current studies are mainly retrospective and observational, and lack adjustment for confounders or addressing biases, making it difficult to guide treatment decisions. Prospective studies and systematic reviews are needed to address these issues.

Summary: Prostate cancer is a common malignancy with diverse clinical outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between renal function and different molecular subtypes of prostate adenocarcinomas. The study analyzed 72 patients with prostate cancer and associated chronic kidney disease who underwent radical prostatectomy. The results showed that the overexpression of SPINK1 was associated with higher kidney disease stages and serum creatinine levels, while TFF3 was linked to kidney function. The study also revealed associations between kidney disease stages and prognostic grade groups in different molecular subtypes, highlighting the complex interplay between kidney function and tumor behavior.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a common cause of mortality and morbidity in adults, with limited therapeutic options. Kidney transplantation is the gold standard treatment, but has limitations. Recent studies have shown the potential of converting diseased kidney cells into functional ones, leading to a novel therapy called autologous selected renal cell transplantation. Although clinical studies on this therapy are limited, it shows promise and larger studies are needed to establish its therapeutic potential.
