Summary: This retrospective study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database found that in Taiwanese patients with end-stage renal disease and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, rivaroxaban may be associated with a lower risk of thromboembolism but a similar risk of major bleeding compared to warfarin. Additionally, similar findings were observed for patients who received 10 mg of rivaroxaban. Further investigation is needed to confirm the potential benefit of 10 mg of rivaroxaban in this population.

Summary: Through analyzing insurance claims data from Taiwan, we found that statin therapy may reduce mortality risks for hyperlipidemic patients, especially in those with end-stage renal disease. Hydrophilic statin therapy showed superior effects in reducing all-cause mortality and deaths from cancer.

Summary: Weight variability is known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular events and mortality. This study investigated the relationship between weight change and the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The findings showed that both weight loss and weight gain of 10% or more were associated with a higher risk of ESRD compared to a weight change of less than 5%.

Summary: This study found that hypertension control is associated with the risk of end-stage renal disease in newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation patients, emphasizing the importance of blood pressure control once patients are diagnosed with AF to prevent ESRD.

Summary: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) occurring in the setting of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) shows unique clinicopathological characteristics, with acquired cystic kidney disease-associated renal cell carcinoma (ACKD-RCC) and clear-cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (ccpRCC) being the most frequent types. Other types of RCC also occur in ESRD, albeit with different frequencies from the non-ESRD general population. While the histological features of RCC do not vary in the setting of ESRD vs. non-ESRD, other findings, such as multifocality and multiple tumor types, are more frequent in ESRD. Studies have generated novel and important knowledge of the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, immunophenotype, and molecular characteristics of ESRD-associated RCC.

Summary: The study suggests an association between oral health, depicted by number of natural teeth, and the increased risk of kidney diseases. The risk of end-stage renal disease was found to be higher with lower number of natural teeth and longer follow-up periods. Factors such as age, body mass index, and smoking status were also significantly associated with this relationship.

Summary: The study suggests that psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of infection in ESRD patients, but treating psoriasis can reduce the risk of some infections and improve survival rates.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of changes in MetS components on ESRD using data from the Korean National Health Insurance System. The results showed that individuals with MetS components had a higher risk of developing ESRD, especially in those with impaired renal function.

Summary: This study investigated the association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) risk using a large cohort in Korea. The results showed that people with AMD had a 33% increased risk of ESRD, and the risk was even higher when accompanied by visual disability.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The results showed that patients with RA had an increased risk of ESRD compared to those without RA, and the risk was higher in relatively young and healthy individuals. Therefore, kidney-protective treatment, such as biologic agents, should be preferred for these patients with RA.

Summary: This study identified three elevated plasma proteins associated with protection against progressive renal decline and progression to endstage renal disease in individuals with diabetes. These protective proteins may serve as biomarkers for stratifying diabetic individuals by their risk of developing ESRD, and could be explored as potential therapeutics to delay or prevent ESRD onset.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease and cardiac insufficiency often co-exist, especially in uremic patients on hemodialysis. Impaired renal function is often indicative of poor prognosis in patients with cardiac insufficiency. Inflammation plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease and is indicative of prognosis.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The findings show that SLE patients with DM have a 3 times higher risk of developing ESRD compared to SLE patients without DM.
