The Goiana River Estuary (7 degrees 30'S 34 degrees 47'W) is a typical estuary of the semi-arid tropical regions. This estuary shelters a rich fauna of fish, crustaceans and mollusks which play an important role in the life of traditional populations. It is also the main recipient of the effluents from the sugarcane agro-industry and sewage from settlements and villages. Trichiurus lepturus (n = 104), from the Goiana Estuary were examined for total mercury contents during ten months (2005 to 2007) spaning two dry seasons and part of a rainy season. The studied individuals showed weight (W) (204.1 +/- 97.9 g) and total length (TL) (63.1 +/- 10.1 cm, range 29.5-89.0 cm) with a significant (p<0.05) correlation. Correlation between TL and Hg-T (r = 0.37286) and between W and Hg-T (r = 0.38212) were positive and significant (p< 0.05). Two-way ANOVA (n = 81) showed that TL and W had significant difference (p< 0.05) among seasons. The Hg-T showed differences in relation to the factor season (p< 0.05). The correlation between Hg-T and rainfall showed a negative and significant relation (r = -0.56; p< 0.05). Rainfall strongly influenced the bioacumulation of mercury in this species. Dryer months showed relatively higher mercury concentrations than the end of the rainy season. Less rainfall, and consequently less particulate matter and less primary production in the estuary, make mercury more bioavailable. Fish from this estuary are fit for human consumption at all times of the year.

An upwelling area as a hot spot for mercury biomonitoring in a climate change scenario: A case study with large demersal fishes from Southeast Atlantic (SE-Brazil)

Petrus Galvao, Bruna Sus, Jose Lailson-Brito, Alexandre Azevedo, Olaf Malm, Tatiana Bisi

Summary: This study investigated the bioaccumulation of monomethylmercury (MeHg) in deep-sea fish from the Southeast Atlantic Ocean, revealing that muscle tissue is the main storage site for MeHg, while liver tissue contains the highest total mercury concentrations. The research also highlights the promotion of mercury biomagnification in a tropical upwelling ecosystem, suggesting that upwelling areas may serve as hot spots for monitoring MeHg in marine biota.

A review on pesticides in flower production: A push to reduce human exposure and environmental contamination

Patricia C. G. Pereira, Claudio E. T. Parente, Gabriel O. Carvalho, Joao P. M. Torres, Rodrigo O. Meire, Paulo R. Dorneles, Olaf Malm

Summary: Flower import regulations are restricted for food security and biosafety, but the lack of pesticide limits for ornamental flowers can result in overuse of pesticides and trade of contaminated products. Many countries ban certain pesticides in flower production, with more research in developed countries, but there are still risks to both the environment and human health.

Summary: Long-term exposure of Eisenia andrei earthworms to fluoroquinolone-contaminated poultry litter led to increased CAT and SOD activities, as well as dose-dependent responses in GST and GSH levels. However, lipid peroxidation levels showed a decreasing trend. These findings suggest a trend of antioxidant system attenuation in response to successive poultry litter applications, with major alterations observed in the first month of exposure.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of plastic particles in the digestive tracts of fishes from a tropical estuarine system in the Gulf of California. Plastic debris was found in 50.5% of the fish analyzed, with most particles being small microplastics. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy identified the main polymers present, which include polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyacrylic. These results provide evidence of plastic contamination in estuarine biota in the Gulf of California.

Trophic position, altitudinal distribution, and water dependence as determining factors for mercury concentrations in tropical montane anurans

Leandro de Oliveira Drummond, Rodrigo Ornellas Meire, Caryne Braga, Carlos Eduardo de Rezende, Olaf Malm, Rui Cerqueira

Summary: This study investigated the influence of altitudinal distribution, size, trophic position, and degree of water dependence on mercury concentration in amphibians in a mountainous complex in southeastern Brazil. The results showed a positive relationship between elevation and mercury concentration in topsoil samples from rainforest sites, while samples from cloud forest and highland grasslands had lower mercury concentration than expected. This suggests that vegetation structure plays a key role in the deposition of atmospheric mercury, and various factors such as elevation, trophic level, and water dependence affect mercury concentration in amphibians.

Ventral feathers contained the highest mercury level in brown booby (Sula leucogaster), a pantropical seabird species

G. P. Bighetti, J. A. Padilha, L. S. T. Cunha, O. Malm, P. L. Mancini

Summary: Seabird feathers are important matrices for analyzing environmental contaminants. In this study on brown boobies, the concentration of total mercury (THg) was measured in different types of feathers, revealing higher levels in ventral and wing feathers compared to dorsal and tail feathers. Juvenile birds had lower concentrations of THg in all feather types compared to adults. Ventral feathers are suggested as the most suitable biomonitor for THg contamination in brown boobies, but further studies are needed for other tropical seabird species.

Summary: Urban expansion in Brazilian coastal zones has had various negative impacts on coastal marine ecosystems due to unorganized land use and lack of infrastructure projects. Improper disposal of domestic and industrial wastewater in coastal waterbodies has caused significant environmental problems. This study aimed to understand the relationship between the contamination of groundwater with domestic sewage and the density and composition of benthic infauna on sandy beaches. The findings revealed that higher concentrations of nutrients in water percolating through sediment in the summer, increased domestic wastewater discharge, and intense precipitation led to surface and groundwater contamination. Moreover, the study showed an increase in the population density of Thoracophelia furcifera, indicating its potential as an indicator of groundwater eutrophication. This research provides valuable insight for monitoring and improving the environmental quality of sandy beaches.
