The present study analyzed the drosophilid assemblages in different levels of urbanization in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Collections were carried out in 2008 in three different environments: a highly urbanized area-Jardim BotA cent nico, a forested area with intermediary urbanization-Parque Gabriel Knijnik, and in a relatively well-preserved forested area, although threatened by the urban growth-Morro Santana. In Jardim BotA cent nico, 36 species belonging to four genera were found, with high abundance of exotic species as Drosophila simulans Sturtevant and Zaprionus indianus (Gupta). In Parque Gabriel Knijnik, 33 species that belonged to four genera were found, with higher abundances of native species belonging to the Drosophila tripunctata species group and Drosophila willistoni species subgroup, and lower abundance of exotic species. As for Morro Santana, 32 species and three genera were found, with higher abundances of native groups, low representativeness of exotic species, and absence of Zaprionus indianus. The analysis of the Jaccard index showed higher similarity in the species composition between samples collected in summer and autumn, and between samples collected in winter and spring. On the other hand, the Morisita index differentiated Jardim BotA cent nico from the other two studied sites. Our results show that Morro Santana is an important area of native biodiversity, reinforcing, therefore, the inclusion of this area in the project for the creation of an ecological corridor as proposed by the Ministry of the Environment of Brazil.

Functional traits for ecological studies: a review of characteristics of Drosophilidae (Diptera)

Summary: Studies in functional ecology help understand community dynamics, biological interactions, and ecosystem services. However, trait selection and measurement are often not standardized. A review on Drosophilidae suggests three categories of functional traits for analysis to understand their functional patterns: habitat perception, flight performance, and ecophysiological responses. This framework can be used for basic and applied studies, particularly for testing hypotheses on community structure.

Summary: Encounters between flowers and invertebrates play a crucial role in tropical forest ecosystems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive database of flower-invertebrate interactions in the Atlantic Forest. The dataset includes over 18,000 interaction records forming 482 networks, involving 641 plant genera and 581 invertebrate genera. The study highlights the knowledge gap in canopy flower-invertebrate interactions and the need for further research in remote forested areas.

Phylogenetic position of Drosophila bocainensis (Diptera, Drosophilidae) in the willistoni group and the paraphyletic status of the bocainensis subgroup

Henrique R. M. Antoniolli, Marindia Depra, Vera L. S. Valente

Summary: The willistoni group of Drosophila has been an important model for studying evolutionary processes in the Neotropics. This study focused on the paraphyly of the bocainensis subgroup within this group and found that it diverged around 6.81 million years ago. The possible causes of this paraphyly were discussed.

Interpopulation variation of transposable elements of the hAT superfamily in Drosophila willistoni (Diptera: Drosophilidae): in-situ approach

Summary: Transposable elements are an important part of the genome that can influence organisms through various mechanisms. In this study, we compared and evaluated the presence, structure, and copy number of three hAT superfamily transposons in different strains of Drosophila willistoni species. We found that these transposons were widely distributed in the species, but with some variations among strains. These differences could reflect the genomic and chromosomal plasticity of D. willistoni in adapting to different environments.

Temporal edge effects structure the assemblages of Drosophilidae (Diptera) in a Restinga forest fragment in Southern Brazil

Summary: The study analyzed the seasonal patterns of abundance, richness, and composition of Drosophilidae in a Restinga forest fragment in southern Brazil, in relation to the distance from the edge to the interior. The results showed that edge effects were most pronounced during winter, with lower dissimilarity between the edge and interior in spring, autumn, and summer due to immigration of individuals from outside the fragment. Some species were found to be asymmetrically distributed within the fragment, highlighting the importance of understanding fragmentation dynamics for conservation purposes.
