Topography and vegetation structure mediate drought impacts on the understory of the South American Atlantic Forest

Renan Kopp Hollunder, Pierre Mariotte, Tatiana Tavares Carrijo, Milena Holmgren, Jaquelini Luber, Bethina Stein-Soares, Karlo Gregorio Guidoni-Martins, Karina Ferreira-Santos, Fabio Rubio Scarano, Mario Luis Garbin

Summary: The study assessed the effects of a severe El Nino-induced drought on dominant and low abundance understory plant species in the South American Atlantic Forest. High tree density reduced survival to drought for understory woody plants, while growth rates of dominant and low abundance species were lower on steeper slopes.

Systematic review of soil ecosystem services in tropical regions

Aline F. Rodrigues, Agnieszka E. Latawiec, Brian J. Reid, Alexandro Solorzano, Azeneth E. Schuler, Carine Lacerda, Elaine C. C. Fidalgo, Fabio R. Scarano, Fernanda Tubenchlak, Ingrid Pena, Jose Luis Vicente-Vicente, Katarzyna A. Korys, Miguel Cooper, Nelson F. Fernandes, Rachel B. Prado, Veronica Maioli, Viviane Dib, Wenceslau G. Teixeira

Summary: The research in tropical regions on soil ecosystem services (SES) has highlighted the importance of the approach but also shown a lack of consistent framework for defining SES. Most studies focus on measuring soil natural capital and processes, with only a few undertaking monetary valuation. Despite an increase in publications, there is still a significant knowledge gap regarding SES approaches in tropical regions, suggesting an opportunity for integration into policy and practice to improve land use decisions and ecosystem protection.

Turning Water Abundance Into Sustainability in Brazil

Vinicius F. Farjalla, Aliny P. F. Pires, Angelo A. Agostinho, Andre M. Amado, Reinaldo L. Bozelli, Braulio F. S. Dias, Viviane Dib, Bias M. Faria, Andrea Figueiredo, Eli A. T. Gomes, Angelo J. R. Lima, Roger P. Mormul, Jean P. H. B. Ometto, Renata Panosso, Mauro C. L. B. Ribeiro, Daniel A. Rodriguez, Jose Sabino, Vinicius Scofield, Fabio R. Scarano

Summary: Brazil possesses abundant water resources, and in order to achieve sustainable development, it is necessary to overcome management and conservation challenges. A novel strategy is proposed, including adopting low-cost local solutions, diversifying renewable energy sources, and implementing measures such as increasing hydrokinetic turbines for energy generation in sparsely populated river-abundant regions.

Regional and local determinants of drought resilience in tropical forests

Renan Kopp Hollunder, Mario Luis Garbin, Fabio Rubio Scarano, Pierre Mariotte

Summary: Research has shown that altitude and topography are key factors controlling the drought resilience of tropical forests. Different types of tropical forests exhibit varying responses to drought, with steeper and drier habitats being more sensitive. Important abiotic factors include soil nutrients, water availability, while key biotic factors include leaf economic and hydraulic plant traits.

Minimum costs to conserve 80% of the Brazilian Amazon

Jose Maria Cardoso da Silva, Luis Claudio Fernandes Barbosa, Julie Topf, Ima Celia G. Vieira, Fabio R. Scarano

Summary: The protection of the Brazilian Amazon is crucial for preventing the collapse of global biodiversity and mitigating the negative impacts of climate change worldwide. Maintaining 80% of the region within conservation areas would require an annual cost of at least USD 1.7-2.8 billion for management and system-wide expenses, as well as an upfront investment of USD 1.0-1.6 billion. Building a sustainable and definitive conservation system to preserve the socioecological integrity of the world's most biodiverse region is still possible but time is running out.

Toward integrating private conservation lands into national protected area systems: Lessons from a megadiversity country

Jose Maria Cardoso da Silva, Luiz Paulo Pinto, Fabio Rubio Scarano

Summary: Private conservation lands are crucial for protecting biodiversity in Brazil, with native vegetation preservation being the most important mechanism. The Brazilian law mandating landowners to set aside conservation areas has helped protect remnants of native vegetation in old economic frontiers, which can serve as the foundation for effective regional conservation systems. However, upgrading these remnants to privately protected areas and integrating them into the national protected area system still presents challenges.
