With assignment methods are generally indicated several statistical approaches that use genetic information to identify or verify membership of individuals or groups of individuals. In the present research, the stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA), the canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) and the discriminant analysis (DA) were used to develop an assignment method based on genotypes obtained from the Illumina's OvineSNP50 BeadChip. The three statistical techniques were used to select the most informative markers for discriminating 21 different sheep populations (20 Italian and 1 Slovenian) and their 5 geographic areas of origin. The procedure selected two reduced pools of markers, 110 and 108, that were able to exactly discriminate the 5 geographic areas and the 21 sheep populations, respectively. Moreover, all animals were correctly allocated in the validation procedure. The obtained results indicated that the combined use of the SDA, CDA, and CD techniques represents an efficient strategy for selecting a reduced pool of highly discriminant markers. These SNPs could be further used to develop a low cost customized essay to trace the breed or the geographic area of animals or derived foodstuffs. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The SNP-Based Profiling of Montecristo Feral Goat Populations Reveals a History of Isolation, Bottlenecks, and the Effects of Management

Elisa Somenzi, Gabriele Senczuk, Roberta Ciampolini, Matteo Cortellari, Elia Vajana, Gwenola Tosser-Klopp, Fabio Pilla, Paolo Ajmone-Marsan, Paola Crepaldi, Licia Colli

Summary: This study investigated the evolutionary history and relationships of the Montecristo wild goat population. The results showed low genetic diversity and significant genetic differentiation in the population on the island compared to other Mediterranean breeds. The study also suggested that the Montecristo goats experienced multiple demographic fluctuations and exhibited noticeable differentiation between the two nuclei.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic pollutant, impairs oocyte fertilization, through oxidative damage on cumulus cells (CCs). This study analysed the transcriptomic profile of CCs of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from adult and prepubertal sheep, exposed to Cd nanomolar concentration during in vitro maturation. Differential gene expression analysis identified genes associated with ovarian functions and Cd effects, providing valuable biomarkers for oocyte competence evaluation.

A transgenerational study on the effect of great-granddam birth month on granddaughter EBV for production traits in Italian Simmental cattle

Nicolo P. P. Macciotta, Corrado Dimauro, Lorenzo Degano, Daniele Vicario, Alberto Cesarani

Summary: Heat stress during pregnancy can lead to physiological and metabolic changes in the offspring of animals, as a result of epigenetic reprogramming of the genome. This study investigated the transgenerational effects of heat stress in Italian Simmental cows. The birth months of the dam and granddam, as well as the temperature-humidity index during pregnancy, were found to affect breeding values for dairy traits in the daughters and granddaughters. The findings suggest an epigenetic inheritance due to environmental stressors in Italian Simmental cattle.

Summary: In this study, the genetic structure of Italian Holstein breed was analyzed using genome-wide data and compared with North American population. The results showed significant differences between Italian and North American stock. Genes related to milk quality, disease resistance, and fertility were identified through selection signature analyses. This study provides a foundation for further research and practical applications.

Genomic Analysis of the Endangered Fonni's Dog Breed: A Comparison of Genomic and Phenotypic Evaluation Scores

Matteo Cortellari, Arianna Bionda, Raffaella Cocco, Sara Sechi, Luigi Liotta, Paola Crepaldi

Summary: This study analyzed the genomic background of the Fonni's dog and found that it is closely related to other shepherd dogs while also having unique genetic characteristics. The study compared different phenotypical and genetic scores and found a positive correlation, with the genomic score having the highest correlation with breed typicality. The judges' score showed little variability and could be improved to better evaluate the breed. The recovery and preservation of the Fonni's dog will require collaboration between breeders and the Italian kennel club, as well as support from regional programs.

Lunar Cycle, Climate, and Onset of Parturition in Domestic Dromedary Camels: Implications of Species-Specific Metabolic Economy and Social Ecology

Carlos Iglesias Pastrana, Francisco Javier Navas Gonzalez, Juan Vicente Delgado Bermejo, Elena Ciani

Summary: Female dromedaries adjust the onset of parturition to give birth during darker and safer nights. Weather variables, such as mean wind speed, can also affect the time of delivery. The onset of parturition for male offspring may occur on slightly brighter nights and when mean wind speed is lower compared to female offspring.

Phenotypic and Genomic Characterization of the Comune di Sicilia Goat: Towards the Conservation of an Endangered Local Breed

Arianna Bionda, Vincenzo Lopreiato, Annalisa Amato, Matteo Cortellari, Carmelo Cavallo, Vincenzo Chiofalo, Paola Crepaldi, Luigi Liotta

Summary: This study aims to advance the recognition process of the Comune di Sicilia goat as a distinct breed by characterizing its phenotypic and genomic features. The research identifies distinctive genomic and phenotypic traits in the Comune di Sicilia breed, distinguishing it from other breeds in the same region. A comprehensive approach considering both morphology and genomic background is recommended to ensure the preservation of the breed and prevent excessive inbreeding.

Effects of Dietary Enrichment with Olive Cake on the Thyroid and Adrenocortical Responses in Growing Beef Calves

Summary: Further research on the relationship between endocrine adaptation, body weight, and productive performances is of great interest. The use of olive cake in animal feed formulations has positive effects on the quality of final products and does not have a detrimental effect on maintaining physiological hormone concentrations. Incorporating agro-industrial by-products into livestock feed formulations can also positively impact feed costs and promote a circular bio-economy.

New Strategies for Conservation of Gentile di Puglia Sheep Breed, an Autochthonous Capital of Millennial Tradition in Southern Italy

Letizia Temerario, Davide Monaco, Antonella Mastrorocco, Nicola Antonio Martino, Sandor Cseh, Giovanni Michele Lacalandra, Elena Ciani, Maria Elena Dell'Aquila

Summary: In recent years, local animal breeds have faced genetic erosion and extinction risk due to industry and market preferences. The Gentile di Puglia (GdP) sheep breed, native to Southern Italy, is at risk and needs conservation strategies. This study aimed to evaluate reproductive efficiency on a GdP farm and establish a cryopreservation protocol for immature oocytes, leading to in vitro embryo production and transfer. Clinical and biotechnological-assisted reproduction approaches can support the conservation of GdP and other local sheep breeds.

Phenotypic and genetic characterisation of methane emission predicted from milk fatty acid profile of Sarda dairy ewes

F. Correddu, S. Carta, M. Congiu, A. Cesarani, C. Dimauro, N. P. P. Macciotta

Summary: Individual methane emissions are considered as a potential breeding goal to improve the sustainability of ruminant farming systems. However, the high costs and logistics of large-scale recording of individual methane emissions pose difficulties. This study aimed to estimate the methane yield and intensity of dairy sheep using equations developed for dairy cattle and to evaluate the factors affecting these measurements. The results provide valuable insights into the phenotypic and genetic background of methane emissions in Sarda dairy sheep.
