Biobanking in radiotherapy trials - a challenge to the clinical research community

Duncan C. Gilbert, Valerie Speirs

Summary: Precision oncology relies on high-quality tissue samples, but samples from patients receiving radiotherapy are less commonly available for biomarker studies. Although biobanks with material from radiotherapy studies exist, the challenge is to increase their visibility and accessibility to researchers.

Male breast cancer: an update

Stephen Fox, Valerie Speirs, Abeer M. Shaaban

Summary: Male breast cancer is rare but its incidence is increasing, with risk factors including increased longevity, obesity, testicular diseases, and BRCA2 mutations. Histologically, MBC is often grade 2, hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative, similar to female breast cancer but significant differences exist.

MicroRNA-495/TGF-β/FOXC1 axis regulates multidrug resistance in metaplastic breast cancer cells

Uttom Kumar, Yunhui Hu, Nahal Masrour, Marcos Castellanos-Uribe, Alison Harrod, Sean T. May, Simak Ali, Valerie Speirs, R. Charles Coombes, Ernesto Yague

Summary: The study revealed an interplay between miR-495-3p, TGF-beta 2, and FOXC1 in regulating multidrug resistance in MBC, and pharmacological intervention targeting these interactions could increase sensitivity of cells to doxorubicin and paclitaxel.

Exploring the influence of rural residence on uptake of organized cancer screening - A systematic review of international literature

Lauren T. Walji, Peter Murchie, Gerald Lip, Valerie Speirs, Lisa Iversen

Summary: This study revealed that cancer screening uptake is generally lower in rural areas compared to urban areas, with significantly lower rates for colorectal cancer screening in rural areas. Breast cancer screening uptake did not show a significant difference between rural and urban areas. The significant statistical heterogeneity among the studies included in the meta-analyses limits the overall consistency of the findings.

Radiotherapy biobanking: current landscape, opportunities, challenges, and future aspirations

Tim H. Ward, Duncan C. Gilbert, George Higginbotham, Chris M. Morris, Valerie Speirs, Nicola J. Curtin

Summary: Radiotherapy is crucial in cancer treatment, but there are significant differences in patient response, necessitating further research into predictive biomarkers. Patients are willing to donate tissue samples for research, but there are barriers to collecting and sharing data and samples currently.

Quality Considerations When Using Tissue Samples for Biomarker Studies in Cancer Research

Valerie Speirs

Summary: The article highlights the importance of utilizing tissue from biobanks in biomarker studies, as biomarkers play a crucial role in defining measurable characteristics of biological and biomedical procedures. It also addresses the significance and challenges of linking clinical data to biological samples in cancer research.
