Summary: The progress in translational cancer research relies on access to well-characterized samples from a representative number of patients and controls. Our biobanking focuses on exploring pathogenic gene variants that may predispose to cancer in non-tumoral tissue. The collection includes various types of cancer, with breast, colorectal, and prostate carcinoma being the most common diagnoses. Additionally, we have developed program packages to manage patient registration and clinical data, making our biobank a model for dispersed biobanking from multiple hospitals. This resource is important for understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying common cancers and can be utilized by other research groups.

Summary: The term biobanking is often misused, and a proper definition should refer to large collections of biospecimens linked to personal and health information for health and medical research. The International Organization for Standardization emphasizes that biobanks are legal entities driving the process of acquisition and storage of biological materials. This review covers basic principles of biobanking, including definitions, classification systems, standardization processes, sustainability, and ethical and legal requirements, as well as examples of next-generation biobanking focusing on cancer-associated biobanking infrastructure.

Health and economic benefits of secondary education in the context of poverty: Evidence from Burkina Faso

Summary: Although formal education is considered important for individual well-being globally, enrollment in secondary schooling remains low in many low- and middle-income countries. This study estimates the survival and monetary benefits of secondary schooling in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, Burkina Faso. The results indicate that secondary education is associated with significant health and economic benefits.

Can active investment managers beat the market? A study from the US large cap equity segment

Summary: This paper examines the continuous rise of index investing in the U.S. large-cap equity market and its manifestations. By analyzing a wide array of managed assets, the study finds that passive investments outperform active investments in terms of returns. The results also indicate that active investments have lower volatility and no significant differences in risk-adjusted returns. This suggests that there has been no change in intrinsic market efficiency and overall supports the efficient market hypothesis in the target sample.

Adipose Tissue-Breast Cancer Crosstalk Leads to Increased Tumor Lipogenesis Associated with Enhanced Tumor Growth

Summary: In studying the metabolic symbiosis between breast cancer and adipose tissue, it was found that adipose tissue promotes tumor growth by stimulating lipogenesis. However, targeting lipogenesis alone may have adverse effects. To overcome tumor adaptation to treatment, it is suggested to apply aggressive therapy targeting multiple metabolic pathways simultaneously along with conventional treatment.

Does financial education help to improve the return on stock investment? Evidence from China

Summary: Individual investors play an important role in the capital market, and improving their financial welfare has always been a long-standing goal for policymakers and researchers. Using data from a national survey on individual investor behavior in China, we examine the relationship between individual investors’ financial education and the performance of their stock portfolios. The results suggest that individual investors who receive financial education are more likely to increase their profits in the stock market due to their good investment habits and higher risk tolerance. Additionally, financial education has a stronger impact on stock market profit making for less experienced investors and those from regions with lower levels of investor protection.

Does higher investments necessarily reduce stock returns?

Summary: Using data from the Chinese A-share stock market, this study finds that firms that substantially increase their investments have higher subsequent stock returns. The effect is more pronounced among large, low BM, profitable firms and stocks in high-growth industries, and persists after controlling for important price factors.

Summary: This study developed a protocol to improve the fidelity and quantity of biobanked primary prostate cancer tissue and found that the protocol significantly increased the pathologic concordance between the tissue samples and the radical prostatectomy specimens, as well as the amount of biobanked tumor tissue.

Residual fibroglandular breast tissue after mastectomy is associated with an increased risk of a local recurrence or a new primary breast cancer

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between residual fibroglandular breast tissue (RFGT) following a mastectomy and in-breast local recurrence (IBLR) or new primary tumor (NP). The results showed that a RFGT volume of >= 1153 mm(3) increased the risk by the factor 3.57 for IBLR or NP. This study provides evidence for the impact of RFGT on the occurrence of IBLR or NP following a mastectomy.

How Do People Respond When They Know That Robots Will Take Their Jobs?

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the adoption of robotic technology in the USA, with a 70% increase in the use of industrial robots per 1,000 workers from 2005 to 2017. This rapid adoption of robots raises concerns about societal transformation. A study finds that individuals are responding to the increasing use of robots by altering their schooling decisions, with a 10% increase in robot exposure associated with a 2.5% rise in college enrollment rate. Furthermore, a higher intensity of exposure to robots during school ages is linked to an increased probability of obtaining a college degree.

Measurement of the hyperelastic properties of 72 normal homogeneous and heterogeneous ex vivo breast tissue samples

The effect of the Universal Primary Education program on consumption and on the employment sector: Evidence from Tanzania

Summary: This paper uses the Tanzanian Universal Primary Education program to study the effect of education on household consumption and labor market participation in a rural environment. The results show that education increases predicted consumption for household heads working in every sector and also increases the probability of women working in agriculture. These surprising findings suggest that education may influence structural transformation and the positive returns to education in agriculture.

A techno-economic evaluation for the genipin recovery from Genipa americana L. employing non-thermal and thermal high-intensity ultrasound treatments

Summary: This study investigated the techno-economic feasibility of high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS)-assisted extraction of Genipin, a valuable phytochemical. Results showed that different amounts of Genipin and Geniposide can be obtained under different HIUS process conditions, with the 450 W nominal power providing better acoustic cavitation and higher Genipin recovery. Economic evaluation revealed that HIUS processes have faster and cheaper capital investment compared to traditional extraction methods.

Exploring the influence of rural residence on uptake of organized cancer screening - A systematic review of international literature

Summary: This study revealed that cancer screening uptake is generally lower in rural areas compared to urban areas, with significantly lower rates for colorectal cancer screening in rural areas. Breast cancer screening uptake did not show a significant difference between rural and urban areas. The significant statistical heterogeneity among the studies included in the meta-analyses limits the overall consistency of the findings.
