Heavy metals in urban soils are associated with direct and indirect human health risks. This study examined bioavailability of heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Cr and As) in urban soil of Seri Kembangan (Malaysia) and their risks to human health. Bioavailability of heavy metal concentration (arsenic, lead, cadmium and chromium) were analysed by a simplified physiologically based extraction test. Both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were assessed using health index and total lifetime cancer risk, respectively. Average concentrations of bioavailability heavy metal were found in the order of Pb (2668.8 mg/kg) > Cr (74 mg/kg) > Cd (47.5) > As (13.75 mg/kg). For non-cancer, average hazard index values of heavy metal order were Pb(1.27) > Cr(0.11) > Cd(0.05). For As, total cancer risk values of Seri Kembangan urban soil (7.2E-6) were lower than the tolerable lifetime cancer risk for regulatory purposes (1E-5). Ingestion pathway is the most contributed pathway for both cancer and non-cancer risks. Land use type is found to be the main contributor which influences heavy metal exposure corresponding to health risk assessment output. Industrial areas were found to have hazard index values were lesser than residential areas in Seri Kembangan urban soil. Location areas in Seri Kembangan as near major roads with large amount of traffics were found to be more higher with HI more than 1, indicating high heavy metal contamination in urban soil due to vehicular emissions. This study has showed that realistic estimation of human health risk of heavy metal contamination in urban soils needs combination of land use type with bioavailability heavy metal concentration.

Microplastic emissions from household washing machines: preliminary findings from Greater Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)

Sarva Mangala Praveena, Melati Syahira Asmawi, Josephine Liew Ying Chyi

Summary: This study found microplastic emissions in laundry water from household washing machines in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, primarily in the form of fiber and fragment shapes such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. The questionnaire survey indicated that fabric properties and washing parameters may contribute to microplastic emissions in laundry water at the household level. Further investigation is needed to understand the impact of fabric properties and washing parameter factors on microplastic emission in laundry water.

Tap water contamination: Multiclass endocrine disrupting compounds in different housing types in an urban settlement

Sze Yee Wee, Ahmad Zaharin Aris, Fatimah Md Yusoff, Sarva Mangala Praveena

Summary: The study analyzed 18 multiclass EDCs in tap water from different housing types and found higher concentrations of bisphenol A in high-rise housing. The distribution of caffeine and sulfamethoxazole in tap water varied significantly between different housing types, with higher salinity and conductivity in high-rise housings compared to landed housings. There were no potential health risks of EDCs estimated in different age groups via drinking water intake.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of experimental parameters on nutrient removal in synthetic greywater using activated carbon from banana trunk. The optimal method for optimization was determined to be Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken Design. Increasing zinc chloride, activation time, and impregnation ratio was shown to enhance the removal of nitrate and phosphate in the synthetic greywater.

Summary: Rice is a staple food globally, but heavy metal contamination in rice production poses a significant threat to both the paddy ecosystem and human health. Cadmium, arsenic, and lead are identified as the most prevalent metals, with mining, irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticide usage being major sources. Health risk assessment through quantitative measurement is essential to identify potential risks from heavy metal exposure through rice consumption.

Microplastics in Malaysian bottled water brands: Occurrence and potential human exposure

Sarva Mangala Praveena, Nur Izzati Shamsul Ariffin, Ayu Lana Nafisyah

Summary: This study analyzes the presence and potential risks of microplastics in eight major bottled water brands in Malaysia. The results show that the concentration of microplastics in these bottled water samples is low, with particle sizes mainly ranging from 100 to 300 micrometers. Transparent microplastics are the most prevalent. The study finds that microplastics in bottled water mainly come from packaging materials and bottle caps. Although the estimated dietary intake values are low, the presence of plastic additives and residual monomers in these particles emphasizes the potential risks to human health.

Microplastics pollution in agricultural farms soils: preliminary findings from tropical environment (Klang Valley, Malaysia)

Sarva Mangala Praveena, Muhammad Aiman Fahim Ishak Hisham, Ayu Lana Nafisyah

Summary: The aim of this research is to investigate the occurrence, characteristics, and potential sources of microplastic pollution at four agricultural farms in Malaysia's tropical region of Klang Valley. The mean number of microplastic particles found in the agricultural soils were 2.1 +/- 0.44 to 3.4 +/- 1.2 particles/kg. Farms B and D had the lowest and highest total microplastic particle counts, 1.5 and 6.0 particles/kg, respectively, which was in line with the intensity of plastic consumption at these farms. These findings confirm the presence of microplastic pollution in Tropical agricultural soils and highlight the need to evaluate the negative impacts of long-term plastic use on agricultural soils.
