A framework for assessing the skill and value of operational recruitment forecasts

Summary: This study introduces a new framework for evaluating recruitment forecasts, emphasizing the importance of predictive power and economic cost-loss decision models. By demonstrating the feasibility of skillful and valuable forecasts in two out of four stocks of lesser sandeel in the North Sea, it highlights the potential for valuable short-term recruitment forecasts and the need to reassess current approaches to recruitment forecasting.

Get up early: Revealing behavioral responses of sandeel to ocean warming using commercial catch data

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between sandeel emergence behavior and sea bottom temperature using fisheries data from the North Sea. It found that warmer years were characterized by earlier emergence, but no net shift in the phenology of emergence was detected over the last three decades. The study highlights how temperature-induced changes in behavior may have implications for predators and fisheries of sandeel.

Skilful decadal-scale prediction of fish habitat and distribution shifts

Summary: Advances in climate prediction allow for skilled forecasting of ocean state and changes in fish species distribution up to a decade ahead. This study demonstrates the application of decadal-scale climate predictions in forecasting habitat and distribution shifts of marine fish species, providing valuable information for stakeholders to foresee and adapt to the challenges of a changing climate. The results show significant forecast skill for individual years and multi-year averages, with the potential to foresee conflicts over marine resources like Atlantic mackerel fishing rights.

Summary: Significant progress has been made in ocean physics and biogeochemistry research, especially regarding decadal-scale prediction, over the past years. However, incorporating human factors into predictions still poses challenges. This paper proposes methods to overcome these challenges and emphasizes the importance of co-production of tools and scenarios to establish trust and ensure adoption of decadal prediction systems by end users. Furthermore, combining narratives and quantitative predictions can better incorporate the human dimension in future efforts to advance decadal-scale prediction.
